Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Embudo - Secluded River Paradise

House with master bedroom and screened-in sleeping porch (Sleeps 2 - 3)

This property is great for a couple's getaway, for artists and writers, or just anyone who needs privacy and natural beauty without interference of neighbors or other homes. It is ideal for one couple, but can also accommodate a third person in some situations. No pets, no smoking, and not appropriate for children.

As you turn off a two lane highway you descend on a private dirt road to a hidden riverfront drive with lovely rock walls, green grass, and fruit trees. Then you reach the Mission style adobe wall which opens onto a pueblo-style home on a tree filled oasis facing the river. The only people you need see are the occasional rafters floating by in summer as you barbecue outside.

You will have one of the most beautiful views imaginable while staying in this home! The cozy living room has a rock fireplace and a large window looking at the Rio Grande River (just 15 feet away). Mornings, as you have your coffee on the back portal facing the river, you may see our resident blue heron or our beloved bald eagle family overhead as well as the ever-present ducks floating downriver.

If you need more stimulation, then get in your car and do the scenic drive to Taos or Santa Fe where you have shopping, museums, skiing and many other activities. Also, there is a thriving art community in Dixon with a country, co-op grocery store, library, community center, and two award winning vineyards. Check out CHIRIPADA and VIVAC for wine tasting, and you can't miss eating at Zuli's restaurant in Dixon!

The property is also available to host your outdoor wedding or other events such as family reunions (does not include house). For more information call (617) 947-9016

About D. Heinley

I grew up in a very small town in Arkansas, but my family moved to Florida when I was 14. I attended USF in Tampa and then Boston College for my master's work in History. I went to Paris to finish my thesis and did not return for 5 years! My focus shifted to Fine Art and I began collecting 19th Century French paintings with my French partner. For 15 years afterwards, I represented these masterworks in Boston from a Townhouse on Marlborough Street and curated exhibits for galleries and institutions. I discovered New Mexico later and was captivated instantly so I built my 'get-a-way' (fantasy) home and have used it as my retreat from a very demanding professional life. I have found much inspiration here.

D. Heinley purchased this house in 1997

Why D. Heinley chose New Mexico

It chose me! It was the last place I ever thought I would be, however, I stopped to visit a friend on my way back from a business trip and she introduced me to the Dixon area....that was it for me! When I saw the land I fell under its spell and knew that I had to return. I have traveled all over the world and have not found an area as dramatically beautiful as northern New Mexico.

What makes this house unique

I really enjoy watching the wildlife on the river and canoeing. Swimming and rafting are also fun. Cooking out on the river and building a crackling fire in the kiva fireplace is always a wonderful way to relax. There are some very special secluded and magical places to walk or hike with breathtaking views. I guess the privacy of my land and the rustic charm of the place are what I enjoy most because I can totally relax and heal from the pressures of my business and city-life. Everything else just either slips away or falls into place here. It is paradise on earth to me.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our first stay was only a week and we were so happy that we booked the house for six months! The river is gorgeous and visible from the back yard and windows. The fishing and swimming/rafting is wonderful and we loved the green grass, trees and backyard cooking right on the river.

My husband and I stayed three days and nights here recently. Although the photographs of the property are gorgeous, actually being there is over and above any impressions received from the photos. It was such a relaxing, enriching, memorable experience.

This place is an architectural jewel, and ike walking through a work of art.

The owner is charming and very helpful in her recommendations of dining and sightseeing.

We visited nearby Abiqui, Ghost Ranch, and Taos.

I have already recommended it to several friends.

We are so grateful to you for sharing your beautiful home with us this past week. We had an incredible trip and your casa on the Rio Grande was at the center of it. Thank you for your kindness and your wonderful spirit which infuses this place. Until next year (paleeze!)

With great affection,

Your guys from Oklahoma!

P.S. All your recommendations were spot on. We especially enjoyed Plaza Blanca and even toured the mosque.

Our best vacation rental. Ever.

Five stars. What more can be said of our stay? Wow! This home is a jewel sitting along a bank of the Rio Grande, casually elegant and impeccably appointed in a way to be found only in New Mexico. It sits on estate-like grounds with beautifully framing stonework and soaring cottonwoods. Utterly relaxing, with soothing river sound and starry nights, we quickly left the rush–rush of Los Angeles behind.

Wanting to explore the northern areas of the state, we felt this rental was a spectacular and lucky find. Being centrally located to Santa Fe, Taos, Ojo Caliente, Abiquiu, “The High Road,” and “The Enchanted Circle”, it worked very well as our base for sight-seeing.

We found it very hard to not feel anything but giddy at being fortunate enough to have stayed here. We highly recommend it.

Yup. It's Paradise.

Beautiful House, Beautiful Furnishings, and Beautiful Grounds.

Short two night stay. Spent all day on a lounge chair reading by the river.

I would highly recommend this property to couples who would like to reconnect and spend

time together away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Can not say enough about what a great feeling it is to be surrounded by such good energy here.

Donna went way beyond making sure our stay would be outstanding.

There is a screened sleeping porch on the riverbank which is very charming and fun. You can see the stars and hear the river all night! Swimming is possible from several locations on the property, but it is the Rio Grande, so it is rustic. WORLD CLASS TROUT FISHING / rafting/canoeing. Canoeing is possible from a lovely canoe dock on the property but you must bring yours or rent. Intimate river front weddings are also booked here.
