'Majestic' is the word most often heard from newcomers to Kelly's Retreat at Livingstone Cove. This beach cottage was completed in 2007 and sits on a rugged hillside facing west, ready and waiting for you to enjoy tonight's enchanting sunset over Northumberland Strait.
This home is of post and beam construction, using 100% native Nova Scotia timbers. Plentiful and large windows allow for multiple and majestic views from virtually every room. Enjoy the sight of Prince Edward Island and Pictou Island from the 500 sq ft glass railed deck. See the local lobstermen from nearby Livingstone Cove set their traps and haul their delicious treasure during the season, then, most summers, the whales start to play just offshore while cruise ships, fishing boats and yachts of all sizes pass quietly in the distance.
The entire second floor is the Master Suite featuring a large bedroom with a queen size bed, a huge bath with a whirlpool tub and a beautiful loft looking down on the living area and the ocean. The main floor features your family room with leather furniture, a soap stone wood stove and a flat screen HD TV, dining room, two bedrooms and a bath all surrounding the modern and fully equipped oak kitchen. The second bedroom features a queen size Select Comfort bed, you pick your sleep number, and a perfect view of the fishing fleet at Livingstone Cove. The third bedroom, tucked in the southeast corner of the house, has two twin beds arranged in trundle fashion.
Bald eagles, hawks and deer are seen on the property most days. If you are a lover of hummingbirds, our feeder is busy from sun up to sun down.
From this home you can hike the extensive Cape George Trail System, ride bikes, kayak, canoe OR sit and read, sleep, beach walk, stay in bed all day just watching mother nature's daily theater played out over the ocean.
Come and enjoy this unique home. You will leave with a renewed sense of calm and integration into this beautiful natural world all around us.

We are a couple of empty nesters who live in Florida and Nova Scotia and travel between the two in our little van camper with our two Labrador Retrievers.
Joe Kelly purchased this house in 2007
This property takes my breath away every time I go there. You will see exactly what I mean as soon as you arrive.
Peace, quite, wildlife, beauty and all the comforts of home. Anything else you might need is just down the road in Antigonish.
Than you so much for two wonderful weeks at the cottage! Every aspect exceeded our expectations and has renewed my wife's faith in high end cottage life :).... worth every penny! Clearly a great deal of thought went in to providing every thing one could possibly need. The views are amazing and we saw many forms of wild life from bears to whales to eagles to foxes and more ... We road the sea side road route to Antigonish many times and enjoyed the views/hills and low traffic flow! Its perfect for road bikes (approx 84km return with about 900m eleveation). Met an older lady from Antigonish on the route who rides it every day!
The weather was perfect with only one rainy day out of 14. While lobster was out of season in the immediate area we found lots about an hour away and used the steaming pot to have one of many seafood feast's :) ...I could go on and on with the superlatives but am running out of characters ..... Thanks once again and dont change anything as its perfect! Hope to be back in the future ... John/Wendy/Robyn/Danny/Madison and our dog Lola !
The house is beautiful with everything we needed for a relaxing weekend. Sunsets were second to none. The house was spacious, clean and comfortable. Thanks for a great long weekend!
We stayed a full week at this lovely home. It's rustic, well laid out and had everything we possibly needed. The view is the key selling point - it faces the Northumberland Strait. We saw whales and seals from the deck. Additionally, there are no city lights around - which means the view of stars, planets and Milky Way are enjoyable on clear nights. The owners provided two telescopes for such viewings as well as binoculars. The owners also provided a BBQ, boiler, 4 mountain bikes, kayak and small boat among amenities. Go to nearby Livingstone Cove for a nice northern shore beach. You'll be surprised how warm the water is.
The house sleeps 8 - 2 in the master, 2 each in both additional bedrooms, plus there was a Murphy bed where 2 more can sleep. There are 2 modern bathrooms - one on each floor. The master en suite is quite spacious. Water pressure/temps are good.
House is on a septic system and area is very green - so waste disposal process is well laid out. There is heat (space & wood burning), but no AC. The house has been engineered to utilize sea breezes through positioning of screened windows - resulting in very cool conditions. We were there in warm July and it was not a problem. The house is very clean and upgraded. The owner left good documentation and we were fine.
Sat TV/DVD was fine; internet/cell is a little spotty but landline is there. There are some DVDs there as well as a wonderful library.
Lovely Antigonish is about 20 min away. It's small, but with the University, it's got places to eat and things to do on a rainy day.
There were quite a bit of necessities provided, such as towels, ample bedding, paper products and cleaning supplies. Tons of pots and pans, kitchen tools, etc. There is a washer/dryer as well as a dishwasher. Prior renters leave behind other staples such as coffee, sugar, oil, ketchup, mustard, etc. There is also a fantastic spice rack. If you know you're going to do 'boils', bring Old Bay as you'll go through it - but the kitchen is very well equipped.
The owner recommends you stop off at New Glasgow for provisions - you may not want to go back out once you get settled in. I agree with that, however I would limit the NG provisions to a day or so, assess what is already provided and go to Sobeys/Antigonish to fill in the blanks.
This was a wonderful rental. It was in a beautiful spot with a great view. It fit five adults with room to spare. Joe was great to work with - everything proceeded smoothly.
Everything about this location is outstanding! The house itself is gorgeous, with incredible views. Some of the best sunsets we have seen anywhere. The area is also beautiful with beaches, lookouts, coves, and scenic drives. We didn't want to leave! While staying here we did the drive around the Cabot Trail which is a definite must do if you are in the area and perfect for a day trip. We stopped for lunch and at one store as well as a few of the scenic lookouts and were back in 10 hours. If we are ever lucky enough to travel back to this area I wouldn't hesitate to book Kelly's retreat again.
Kelly's Retreat was beyond my greatest expectations. The house sits on a very high bluff and overlooks the most beautiful view of the ocean. The extra large glass fronted deck offered room for my entire family to sit out and enjoy the day without any obstructed views. In fact, there is not a bad view from anywhere in this house! Every room was well thought out, spacious and clean! The rental came with every amenity you can think of and had more than enough room to accommodate 6 adults and 1 child. Hummingbirds would visit us every morning at the panoramic kitchen window where you could watch them plus the ocean at the same time. The huge master bedroom had an equally large master bath where there were wonderful breezes to enjoy while soaking in an oversize jacuzzi tub at the end of a wonderfully relaxing day. The wifi, while not the strongest, was still fairly decent for all of us to be on at one time. And really, the only time we were on our devices was to post pictures of this stunning properly and the many moments of us having a great time--- from bocce ball on the front lawn, lobster cooking in the large well stocked kitchen to charades in the comfortable and accommodating living room- we thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this property and will highly recommend it to anyone needing accommodations in Nova Scotia. At the end of a long 3 day drive out, or at the end of a long day exploring pulling up to this house was the often the best part of the day and because it felt so welcoming we all started to call it "home" while there. Joe Kelly, the owner would always return an email quickly for any question I had and booking was effortless. Again, cannot say enough, we were really and truly happy with our experience at Kelly's Retreat!
Kelly's Retreat is less than 20 miles from all amenities listed above. Great spot to use as home base for day trips to Cape Breton or PEI
