Historic Waterside Location in Wickford Village. The 1806 Westgate Watson House, reflected across the water of Academy Cover, is one of the most painted and photographed scenes in Wickford and the region for its picturesque setting and serene New England charm. Just a short block from the Village main street, but at the end of a side street, you’ll feel as if you’re in a magical place, a tranquil oasis but still right in the center of everything. Relax in a peaceful sitting area in the yard and let the ripple of the tidal waterfall transport you back to a simpler time. A weeping willow frames your view of the Village across Academy Cove.
1806 Westgate Watson House: This is a first floor apartment in an historic house. It can be rented as a one or two bedroom space with options of a queen bed in one room and twin beds in the other. The house has an interesting history both for its role in the village and also architecturally for old-house buffs. It started as an 1806 Federal colonial but was 'modernized' in the mid 1800's with a Greek Revival facelift and later expanded when they attached a 1750's ell. Modern conveniences (such as indoor plumbing!) were accommodated to the existing floor plan with minimal changes. While care has been taken to preserve the historic integrity of the house, the living spaces were totally refreshed in the summer of 2011 with a completely new kitchen and updated bathroom. The space combines the best of the old and new without compromising comfort. The rooms are sunny and airy with numerous windows, giving wonderful views and letting in the cool coastal breeze.
This is an apartment within a larger house. Outside, in the yard, there are both shared common areas and also more private areas. See listing # 227850.
We so enjoyed the lovely house and warm surroundings. It was a delightful treat to see the town in its Christmas glory, and to be so close to Newport, to visit the mansions. The house has historical ambience and modern conveniences, couldn't ask for more!
Charming 2 bedroom that sleeps 4 right in the heart of Wickford. We loved the charm and it's proximity to downtown. Jan was a wonderful hostess, ensured we had coffee and milk for our 1st morning after a long and late travel day.
We highly recommend the Watson House.
We so enjoyed our stay in this quaint and comfortable home. It is nestled on the edge of a scenic pond and overlooks the village center. The home is bigger than it looks and was able to accommodate friends and family who stopped in to visit. We all admired the garden too!
Set in an ideal location, walking distance to a all your basic needs- delicious cafes, fun shopping, scenic harbor, and more!
Jan's kindness and hospitality was wonderful. She made herself available for any questions and anticipated our every need.
Such a picturesque setting made that much more wonderful by the folks who opened the home to us!
The yellow house on Elam St in Wickford just wraps its arms around you. There is a feeling of peace here. The owner, Jan, is available and eager to make your stay better in any way she can. The location on the tidal pond with its waterfall makes a perfect yard for relaxing. Wickford and its shops and restaurants are just steps away but there is no traffic or noise to disturb your stay. This is not a modern hotel with its sterile atmosphere. This is a 200 year old house which has sheltered many folks. I will return!
Jan could not have been a better hostess. This charming 2 bedroom home with a restful den and kitchenette was perfect for our stay. The home was very clean and had all the modern conveniences we needed (including WiFi). If you are requiring the amenities of the Hilton Inn like 24hr activity, late night dancing (nightlife), food service etc., then stay at the Hilton. But if you enjoy peace and quiet in a tranquil setting, this is the place. Jan saw to our every need while checking in, and also served as a wonderful concierge, recommending wonderful places to see and dine. 20 minutes from Brown University, 20 minutes from Newport, RI, (to view incredible mansions along the Atlantic, and dine on fish 'n chips at a local pub with great tasting Guinness!) and 15 minutes from the airport makes this an ideal central location. Comfortable beds made for a good nights rest, and the morning was picturesque, sipping coffee while watching family of ducks swimming in the small lake. Swans, egrets, and crabs walking on the waterbed made for a wonderful connection with nature. Bring your camera or better yet, your canvas if you are a painter, because a more picturesque setting will be difficult to find. The only things to beware of, for people like us in Texas who are used to 24 hour Walmarts, wine and beer purchases, gas purchases, etc., this town pulls down the shades and rolls up the welcome mats at 9:00PM. You have to make your own pizza after 10:00PM, so have all your groceries purchased before you check in.
If our travels ever take us back to Providence, we will definitely book this home again. Jan far exceeded our expectations of the charming New England hostess. She was available by phone and she is as pleasant as she is accommodating.
Thanks for a wonderful visit, Jan!
This was our third time staying at Jan's property in Wickford. The previous two times we stayed in the Ell, which was delightful. This time we chose to stay in the Watson House to take advantage of the first floor amenities and the larger space, which we found to be very clean and comfortable. As always, Jan was very kind and accommodating. I hardily recommend to the traveler any apartment on this property.
