Overview

About the property

1-2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, sleeps 2-4

Historic Waterside Location in Wickford Village. The 1806 Westgate Watson House, reflected across the water of Academy Cover, is one of the most painted and photographed scenes in Wickford and the region for its picturesque setting and serene New England charm. Just a short block from the Village main street, but at the end of a side street, you’ll feel as if you’re in a magical place, a tranquil oasis but still right in the center of everything. Relax in a peaceful sitting area in the yard and let the ripple of the tidal waterfall transport you back to a simpler time. A weeping willow frames your view of the Village across Academy Cove.

1806 Westgate Watson House: This is a first floor apartment in an historic house. It can be rented as a one or two bedroom space with options of a queen bed in one room and twin beds in the other. The house has an interesting history both for its role in the village and also architecturally for old-house buffs. It started as an 1806 Federal colonial but was 'modernized' in the mid 1800's with a Greek Revival facelift and later expanded when they attached a 1750's ell. Modern conveniences (such as indoor plumbing!) were accommodated to the existing floor plan with minimal changes. While care has been taken to preserve the historic integrity of the house, the living spaces were totally refreshed in the summer of 2011 with a completely new kitchen and updated bathroom. The space combines the best of the old and new without compromising comfort. The rooms are sunny and airy with numerous windows, giving wonderful views and letting in the cool coastal breeze.

This is an apartment within a larger house. Outside, in the yard, there are both shared common areas and also more private areas. See listing # 227850.

Second visit. Impressed again.

The owner really cares that guests have a great experience. The house and village provide a charming New England triptych.

Quaint and old-world but needs a bit of tidying

  • 4 of 5

Jan was lovely. She met us at the apartment and explained everything. The apartment was just what we wanted for our stay of a few days in the area. It is very well equipped and I would recommend checking out what is there already before heading to the store. It was cold out and the heating was exceptional. Quaint and old-world is lovely but we did feel that this apartment needed some work to bring it up to acceptable standards. Superficially it was pretty clean but if you looked a little closer then you saw that it did need sweeping under things, in particular under the heating vents. It was this that dropped it from 5 to 4. There were plenty of bedclothes and linen. So all in all we enjoyed our stay.

We so enjoyed the lovely house and warm surroundings. It was a delightful treat to see the town in its Christmas glory, and to be so close to Newport, to visit the mansions. The house has historical ambience and modern conveniences, couldn't ask for more!

Perfect location and size!

  • 5 of 5

Charming 2 bedroom that sleeps 4 right in the heart of Wickford. We loved the charm and it's proximity to downtown. Jan was a wonderful hostess, ensured we had coffee and milk for our 1st morning after a long and late travel day.

We highly recommend the Watson House.

Quaint, Quintessential New England experience!

  • 5 of 5

We so enjoyed our stay in this quaint and comfortable home. It is nestled on the edge of a scenic pond and overlooks the village center. The home is bigger than it looks and was able to accommodate friends and family who stopped in to visit. We all admired the garden too!

Set in an ideal location, walking distance to a all your basic needs- delicious cafes, fun shopping, scenic harbor, and more!

Jan's kindness and hospitality was wonderful. She made herself available for any questions and anticipated our every need.

Such a picturesque setting made that much more wonderful by the folks who opened the home to us!
