|Minimum Stay||2 - 7 nights|
Experience historic Wickford Village in the Yellow Ell, a lovingly maintained 1700's wing of the 1806 Westgate Watson house. Relax on the brick terrace and let the ripple of the tidal waterfall transport you back to a simpler time. A weeping willow frames your view of Wickford Village across Academy Cove. A garden walkway leads you into the sunny living room with centuries-old wide plank floors, original woodwork and windows overlooking the water. The updated but period appropriate kitchen has a water view and wide plank floors. A winding New England staircase leads to the large, cozy bedroom with adjoining bath. The coastal breeze and the bird's eye view of the cove are unforgettable.
The Yellow Ell and Westgate Watson House: Reflected across the water of Academy Cove, the 1806 Westgate Watson House is one of the most painted and photographed scenes in Wickford Village. The Yellow Ell predates the main house and was once separate, a classic colonial “one-room” house from the mid 1700's. At some point, the ell was attached to the main house, since a true Yankee would never let a good house go to waste. Modern conveniences (such as indoor plumbing!) were accommodated to the existing floor plan with minimal changes. While care has been taken to preserve the historic integrity of the house, the ell combines the best of the old and new without compromising comfort. The rooms are sunny and airy with windows on both sides, giving wonderful views and letting in the cool coastal breeze.
To ensure that your visit is special, we try to accommodate individual requests. The apartment kitchen comes with complimentary coffee and tea and staple condiments. The refrigerator has cream (or soy creamer if preferred) plus locally-sourced refreshments. We strive to give guests a true get-away and a chance to experience what is unique to the area.
Other details: The Ell is an attached unit (please see listing # 227881) to the main house and has some shared common areas in the yard. The terrace is reserved for the Ell since it adjoins that unit.
We had a memorable stay in this beautifully presented antique home. Everything we needed and everything in its place -- even milk, juice and coffee provided for our first morning! The nicely furnished upstairs bedroom is reached by a twisting old staircase and is open and airy. Memory foam on the bed made for an excellent night's sleep. Ensuite bathroom is supplied with very nice soaps, lotions and shampoos and thick towels. Downstairs living area is comfortable with overstuffed couch and chairs, table/chairs and lots of windows looking out at the lovely water view. Kitchen is small but fully equipped and a pleasure to use. The outdoor area was a highlight -- plenty of comfortable seating and lots of green lawn alongside a tidal pond full of fish and fishing birds, very exciting to watch.
To top it all off, the main village area of Wickford is just one block away. So much fun to be able to just walk to everything -- town dock, restaurants, shops, kayaking, and the quaint antique houses in the historic district.
We will definitely book again.
We really enjoyed our stay! This place is so relaxing with the lake and the beautiful garden! We do miss the great view on the little lake! Communication and evety thing else with our host, Jan, was so easy to deal with and she gave us great recommendations for what to do and where to go. The house itself is just like on the pictures - traditionally "old" but so comfortable and has really everything you need. We would definitly come again.
We had a lovely stay in this charming property. The owner was welcoming, friendly and, when needed, pointed us in the right direction to local markets. The village is worth exploring with its good boutiques (a great yarn shop) and eateries and provisions. And it is a good base to explore the wider area. Recommended.
The description of the property does not do it justice. The location is absolutely beautiful. The accommodations were spotless with extremely comfortable furniture. Jan was the perfect hostess. Newport is close by and you can take a train to Boston. I highly recommend this rental.
Felt right at home. The apt was very charming, clean & had everything we needed. Enjoyed walking in the Village but most places closed at 5. Two restaurants were open in the evening. Would like to see more things to do such as pottery classes or a painting cafe.
We were looking for a quaint, small place to stay while visiting the area. This home was unique to the area and just perfect for us. We wanted to be by the water, yet in a quiet area. It was close to Newport, and we did spend one day there, but we were very content just to stay in this area. Janice was very accommodating, in fact, much more than expected. She provided coffee, creamer, juice and personal items that were very appreciated. We plan to visit again.
Wickford Village is ideally located for a varied vacation, from relaxing on an ocean beach to visiting museums and historical sites. The harbor setting is perfect for all water-related activities, from bay excursions to evening dinner sails to kayaking --- there are boat and kayak rentals just a block away. With an easy half-hour drive, you can experience the small city charm of Providence with its fine restaurants and distinguished universities or cross the Bay to tour the opulent mansions of Newport.
