Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Johnsburg

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7)

The PERFECT Adirondack vacation!

This beautiful new log home is nestled in the mountains on one of the most pristine lakes in the Adirondacks. Garnet Lake is 1.6 miles long and .25 miles across and boasts some of the best bass and pickerel fishing in the area. Two thirds of the lake is surrounded by state-owned undeveloped wilderness.

From the wrap around deck you have the best view down the lake and into the afternoon sun for those delightful happy hours. The lake is famous for its loon population and their distinctive call is a treat to hear over the water. Three kayaks are available for your use and are perfect for exploring the unspoiled wilderness at the other end of the lake. A two person paddleboat and sunfish sailboat also available. Jet skis are prohibited but small motor boats are allowed and there is a boat ramp on the lake. The water is crystal clear with a sandy bottom starting at 6" at the lake's edge and 5' off the end of the dock. Ideal for swimming and water sports of all kinds.

The house is knotty pine throughout and is decorated in Adirondack decor. Two bedrooms and a full bath are upstairs and a bedroom and full bath are on the main level. Two of the bedrooms have queen beds and the third has three twin beds. There is also one sleeper sofa on the ground/lake level. If you've been wanting that Adirondack vacation but are a little nervous of the many 'camps' or 'cozy cottages' that you know will be old and musty then this is the place for you: beautiful outdoors combined with a very clean, new, modern house with all the amenities.

Cook s'mores on the campfire by the water's edge and prepare to see the starriest skies. Hike Crane Mountain or one of the many other well marked local trails; white water raft the Hudson or visit the Garnet Mine (all within 20 minutes). If all this wilderness becomes too much for the kids take them mini golfing or to 6 Flags Amusement park or the water park in Lake George (30 minutes away). The house is equiped with Satellite Direct TV, numerous DVD's and loads of board games.

For the winter traveler Gore Mountain is just 15 minutes away and has excellent downhill skiing and Garnet Hill is rated one of the top five X-country ski areas in the nation. There is ice fishing and many snowmobile trails.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I just wanted to thank you very much for a wonderful vacation. Your house is delightful and maybe the best equipped rental house we have ever been to. We felt so at home and very comfortable.

All 3 kids had the best time and loved kayaking and swimming, and the lake is just about the most beautiful lake one can hope for.

We are already talking about next year.

Thanks again,

Adirondack Bliss

  • 5 of 5

Garnet Lake is aptly named for the gemstones once mined in this region of the Adirondacks. This gem of a lake offers solitude, natural beauty, and all of the activities associated with lake living....kayaking, swimming, fishing, or just chillin' by the fire pit. Our family vacation at Garnet Lake combined the creature comforts of a well-appointed lake house with the natural beauty that greets you every morning as you look out onto the lake and the surrounding mountains. The house has a very remote feel, but it is conveniently located near Gore Mountain, Lake George, and the shops and restaurants in North Creek. We just loved the house and the owners are very friendly to deal with.

Exceptional Rental

  • 5 of 5

Our family rented this beautiful home last weekend. The property was absolutely beautiful. The home offers every item you may need to be comfortable for your stay including beach chairs, life jackets, even for children, wood for the fire pit and much more. The home is large and spacious allowing plenty of room for guests to spread out. Gorgeous views from every floor. Very clean and comfortable. We were looking forward to a relaxing vacation and that is exactly what we had. The kayaking was wonderful, many times we were the only ones on the lake. The fishing was so much fun for our children. The owners were wonderful to work. We look forward to renting this home again and again!!

Not exactly what it seems - All about the view from the SECOND floor

  • 4 of 5

The pictures are a bit misleading. The house is new, clean and nice with lovely views of the lake from the main room but it isn't exactly *on* the lakeshore. There is a rather unattractive crushed gravel road running right between the house and the water's edge. The photos make the crushed gravel appear to be a parking area but it is continuous with the road and once you park your cars, there they are, right between the house and the water's edge. The "lakeshore" is only a tiny strip of crushed gravel/dirt and a retaining wall that drops down to a very small dock. The firepit is directly on the road so we didn't actually feel comfortable building a fire and sitting there at night (which is what I was looking forward to) for fear of getting hit or sprayed by cars coming down the road - not exactly a relaxing proposition. So not having a suitable place for 4 adults to hang out lakeside was a bit disappointing. The paddleboat has seen better days and it makes an awfully loud grinding noise as one side's gears are worn but the kayaks were fun. Inside the house, the great room was quite nice (you don't see the cars or road from the 2nd floor) but the bedrooms were dark & without views of the lake. The kitchen was well equipped except for one major issue - the refrigerator has some kind of leak and underneath the crispers was a large pool of water. The guest book actually asks renters to sop it up every few days! Are you kidding? I am not ok with paying to spend my vacation time cleaning up someone else's nasty, wet mess. For the cost of a long weekend rental, the fridge can and SHOULD be replaced. That definitely put a damper on things (no pun intended). We were two, not-your-average 30-something couples with no kids and felt this was more for families, except the dock/waterfront situation wasn't even well-suited to small children - better maybe for 9 yrs & up - one sulky teenager did sign the guestbook, it is hilarious, must read. The plethora of family photos in the bedroom was a little weird. Recommendation for Adirondack Lodge in town fell a bit flat - kind of cheesy and overrun by a wedding party so we trekked across the street to the divey Barking Spider for beer, shuffleboard and local color - much more our speed. We did enjoy our time here, the foliage was stunning, lake was clean and refreshing (yes I swam in October!) but I would seek out a place with better waterfront for my next rental.

Owner's Response: Tabitha, we apologize that your stay at our place was not up to your expectation. There is a narrow sand dead-end road running between our house and the lake. It is only for the roughly 20 homes on the lake which is why the traffic is so little. We have relied on our photos and the parking description as being in the front of the house to explain this but we will make this clearer in our property overview. We sincerely apologize about the refrigerator. The condensor coils needed to be defrosted and we did not have time to do that right before your stay so we left you the note in case any water did collect. Regarding our kid photos in our bedroom....guilty as charged.

This cabin met our every need during a 4 night stay surrounding the New Year. While a bit far away from Gore Mountain (25 min drive), its qualities made the extra drive well worth. The house is extremely functional for a ski vacation; it is exactly as shown in pictures and has a few extra perks not obvious from the listing. There is a finished basement (right next to the garage), with a TV and a sofa. This takes the eventual kids away from the main floor, and gives adults some peace. There is a storage room behind the basement room, with a washer and a drier. That makes storing the ski gear very easy, and drying up after a day of skiing a breeze. The rooms are very clean, newly carpeted, and there is independent temperature control on the 2 main floors. The kitchen has everything one may need, from spices, to cooking utensils, to aluminum foil, etc.

Although the cabin's setting seemed a bit odd at the beginning (ie very close to the small road), we realized very soon that there are no cars on the road. There are only about 20 homes on the entire- rather large-lake, and most of them are vacation homes, pretty much not occupied on a regular basis. We saw about 5 cars that were not ours during our 5 day stay. The fact that the road is so close to the house made getting to the house very easy (no need for chains or 4wd, the town was very good about keeping the roads passable). On a similar rental last year, our party of 6 had to commute to Gore in a single 5 person car, as getting to and from the previously rented house was pretty much impossible in the typical conditions seen in the mountains, ie with snow falling almost every day. Garnet Lake was frozen during our stay, to the joy of the kids in our party, who sled on it and had a good run to a remote island. There is a good sledding hill up the road, which we enjoyed using.

All in all, a wonderful stay, which we would gladly return to and recommend to our friends.

Vacationers from DC LOVED this home!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I vacationed for a week in late July/early August , at this amazing home in the Adirondacks. Garnet Lake was gorgeous --- quiet, calm, perfect for kayakers and hikers, sleeping in late and reading books on the sunny deck. The home was exactly as described: right on the lake, spacious, bright, clean, and very comfortable. The kayaks , paddleboat and inner tube were in great shape, as was the fire pit..... and we used them daily. There were a few days we just stayed in, played on the lake and ate in.. other nights we ventured into North Creek (which had a great wine bar) and Warrensburg. (Warrensburg had one of the best Italian places we have ever eaten.... Marco Polo). The owners were incredibly helpful, and their emails to us in the week or two prior to our rental had all the information we needed to take care of things, relax and really enjoy our stay. Would definitely recommend this property to anyone... families, romantic weekends, reunions, whatever. We hope to go back in the near future!

Just What We Needed!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful quiet week. Everyday we heard the loons and most of those we saw them too. My husband fished every single day (we brought a small fishing boat) and the kids (in their 20s) used the kayaks as much as they could.

We went to the Black Mountain Inn and had wings and chili (very good). Also had pizza at Pete's Ahhh. We explored both North Creek and Warrensburg and shopped both of the Grand Unions. Next time I would bring more food with us so we wouldn't necessarily need to get to town.

I am so impressed by your place, so beautiful and very very clean....it was the best vacation we have had.
