Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cottage in Dublin - Irish Oasis

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Architecturally designed, beautifully reconceived, gem of a house. An old tramline cottage completely renovated and expanded. One of 14 cottages around a village green, Highfield Grove is a unique spot.

Suited to a family, a couple who need an optional office or studio or even a single person in need of a zen retreat. There is an open-plan living room, large kitchen, master bedroom with ensuite half-bathroom, a twin room and a loft-room. There is a full bathroom with bath and shower and finally a third living space that can be closed off with a sliding door for guest-room/office.

Underfloor heating throughout. State-of-the-art Kitchen equipment. Custom-made furniture and eastern antiques. A landscaped patio with hot outdoor shower, olive tree and herb garden.

And for those so inclined, we can organize private yoga classes at the house, massage therapist, beautician/hair-stylist, facialist given advanced notice. The house is lightfilled with large picture frame windows and skylights. It has clean-lines and architectural features throughout, open fireplace and bespoke kitchen... all to be featured in the Sunday Independent Magazine this month (February).

The house is impeccably quiet. A feeling of Irish countryside even though it is a ten-minute Luas ride to the fashionable pedestrian Grafton Street, the hub and centre of Dublin City leading down to Trinity College with its Book of Kells. All that Dublin has to offer is right on the doorstep and our management team can help you with anything you may need for your stay in Dublin City.

You can bike around, taxi around, bus, Luas or drive around with very secure on-street parking right outside the door. Highfield Grove is beside excellent shops - Dublin's top butcher and fish monger's (Lawlor's), a health food store with organic vegetables and specialty foods, Fothergills bakery, and Wild Lily Cafe with great coffee and croissants, not to mention the great restaurants five minutes from your door...

Palmerston Park with beautiful landscaped grounds is a minute's walk with its great wooded playground for children. River-walks, mountain trails, ocean-strolls and urban-life all in a 20-minute radius. This is a perfect Dublin retreat from which to embark on the Dublin adventure you would like to create.

About The Owner

My name is Dolores. Originally from Dublin, Ireland, I now live in New York. I have lived in and travelled to many places around the Globe, from Tahiti to Egypt and in between and know what it is to have a nice port of entry and a nice bed to sleep in. I am a writer and film-maker and lover of life. Inherently in tune with the needs of a traveller, I take great pleasure in providing a beautiful place to stay in, in my native country, native city, and native village - Rathgar.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2006

Why The Owner chose Dublin

I grew up in Rathgar. When choosing a place to have as my home when traveling back to see family and friends it was important to me to be near the Dublin I had always known. I have always liked to live in the centre of a city whether it was in London, Paris or New York and this house is 2 miles from the hub of Dublin in a beautiful leafy setting with lovely parks, restaurants and shops. The house itself attracted me because it was old with plenty of character and yet in need of complete refurbishment that would allow be run wild with my creativity. The setting of the house, one of twenty cottages around a village green set off from the main road, is completely unique to Dublin and I loved the tranquility and old-world feel of this environment. Every time I turn off from Highfield Road and down into that village green, my body relaxes. The calm is a much needed tonic for life in Manhattan.

What makes this cottage unique

Very important to everywhere I go is to have a place nearby where I can buy fresh, healthy food, a place where I can have a cup of coffee and a croissant, and somewhere to have a lovely walk. Rathgar village and Upper Rathmines Road offer all that anyone could offer in terms of satisfying gourmet cravings and Palmerston Park, 2 minutes from the house, is beautifully landscaped with a wonderful children's playground in the shelter of its old oak trees. All public transport is available right outside the door as well as free parking. And there isn't a quieter spot in all of Dublin. Particularly appealing to me is watching the trajectory of the moon across the master bedroom picture frame window at night, hearing the birds in the morning, leaving the front door open on a sunny day and wandering in and out of the house to the village green with my friends or my cup of coffee, saying hello to the neighbors who have been their for generations, walking in my bare feet around the house with the floors warm from the sun coming in through the skylights, showering outside in those rare summer days, having feasts at the big kitchen table with family and friends and snuggling up in front of the fire with my loved ones.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Dolores,

I was meaning to write to you after our stay and rant and rave about our stay in you fabulous place. We, myself and my 3 pre-teen children thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your flat and our time in Dublin. It was my children's first time to Ireland and I loved the experience of walking up to the bus stop, hoping on and being in Central Dublin in less than 10 minutes. Listening to the conversation and the Dublin brogue. Your flat accommodations were more that comfortable. We all experienced great sleeping accommodations, the shower was fantastic with the overhead faucet and having enough hot water was never a problem with 4 people taking showers daily. I cooked a hardy breakfast every morning that began our day before heading off to explore Dublin and often did not have to eat again until Dinner time. That was so very beneficial due to the high cost of eating out in Dublin. I did eventually rent a car and had no problem parking in front of your apartment, and without the added cost of what a downtown hotel would charge me for overnight parking, I might add. With our GPS navigation device we found our way around town without incident and that itself is miraculous for those of us that drive on the wrong side of the road. We found your apartment a warm and very comfortable place to return to after a long day out and about. We loved all the windows and the bright, modern and airy feel. We were completely surprised at the interior after arriving from the Airport and our long flight over from the Bay Area. From the outside one would not expect to see the interior so wonderfully remodeled with the open, light filled, comfortable layout. My children enjoyed the freedom of playing ball on the grass in the court yard and that is not possible when staying in a large hotel. I have and will continue to highly recommend your apartment to anyone traveling to Ireland in the future.

All the Best!

Convenient and centrally located for travel in and around Dublin. A large supermarket and many quality shops are within walking distance including a butcher, bakery, and seafood shop should you have the time to cook meals. The green right outside the front door is perfect for kids to burn off some energy while close enough that you can keep an eye on them. 2 adults 3 kids 10 to 15 yrs old. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that one of my uncles was a regular at the bottlers bank pub only half a mile away.

Lovely holiday experience

  • 5 of 5

We are very grateful to both Dolores and her father Collum for helping us enjoy a wonderful Irish holiday. This property was very well suited to our needs, and we really enjoyed local Rathgar. Three adults and two children, we lived very comfortably in this cozy space.

Collum was particularly kind and available for questions. He even brought our son a Christmas tree and ornaments with which to decorate. We were so moved by the kindness and giving spirit of the Irish people, our neighbors among them! Our trip, wedding, Christmas, and overall travel experience were exceptional.

Thank you for tho great find.

Take care!

First Choice for Dublin

  • 5 of 5

I was lucky to find this place. Exceptionally well kept. Convenient location and a very cool, well utilized space. Unique, cozy little nooks, modern interior but maintains a traditional feel (so I feel like I'm still in rural Ireland even though there are city-like characteristics to it). Smooth transaction with the owners; in fact, I've enjoyed my interactions with them very much. I've been a guest here multiple times and is always my first choice now when visiting Dublin...

Wonderful spot!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely lovely time in Dublin. This house was perfect for 4 adults. It was about a 3km walk into Dublin, which we did almost everyday. But we also spent a day or two in Rathgar.

The beds were very comfortable, great water pressure in the showers. Colm and Dolores were fantastic to deal with. Colm met us at the house when we arrived and settled us in.

Literally the only downside was that the dryer wouldn't dry the towels at all , even when we did multiple dry cycles.

Highly recommended, a wonderful spot to "come home" to after a full day of sightseeing and walking. We would stay again!!

good location, fun for children, ok house

  • 4 of 5

It is hard for me to put actual stars as it is relative to our expectations. If I have to, I'd give 3 stars to the house itself but 4 stars for our experience. We rented 3 houses this summer in Europe. I am grateful for the vrbo community that allowed us to travel comfortably with unique experience, so I wanted to give back with uncandid reviews so you can make your own decision. I apologize in advance if it offends the owner.

- great location: We have families nearby so it was perfect for us. Walking distance to shops, bus stations, and a great play ground. Convenient to down town. We drove, took taxi and buses. They were all easy!

- Great fun for children.

There is a grass area for the community right out of the door. Our child made friends paying with the neighbor children. The little up-stair loft bedroom was a huge hit for my child and the visiting cousins. The huge chalk board downstairs that serves as a sliding door for the guest bedroom was another highlight for children. Both hosted lots of imaginary plays and art creations.

- Good appliances: stove, teakettle, toaster, dishwasher. The washer/dryer was handy (though small and took a long time)

- We felt the house was kind of rundown and not well maintained. The garden looked like not being cared for. Some plants unhealthy/dying.

- The pantries were completely full that I couldn't unpack our supplies. Many items had long passed expiration date. I ended up reading through all the packages and cleaning out half of the pantries.

- I enjoy cooking. There weren't any stainless steel pots/pans. The no-stick ones were quite scratched. Even I just cooked the breakfast, and a couple of lunch/dinner, I had to borrow all the pots and pans from our family nearby. The oven hadn't been well cleaned. We tried it once, the smoke from the previous leftover grease made unpleasant smell so we didn't use it again.

- There weren't enough storage for unpacking. We are a family of 3 and stayed for a week, and ended up making the down-stair guest bedroom a storage room.

Overall, we still recommend this place to friends but with the details so they can weigh the pro's and con's. We'd also consider renting it again in the future. (if the owner is not offended by this review) We understand it is not easy to upkeep a property in Ireland and appreciate the fun experience and memory it brought to our child, which I do weigh more than our wish for a better maintained house.

Owner's Response: Dear Wendy, I am so sorry that this slipped through the cracks until now. In your email directly following your stay you mentioned how much you had enjoyed your experience at our home and I somehow never saw this review was submitted on the website. Please rest assured that we change all our cookware every few years (in fact we just did so in November 2015). Our garden is a maturing garden and we have it tended to regularly by a professional gardner. As for the pantry, I wish you had contacted us at the time. As you know, Colm would have been only too happy to clear it out. He is on hand during all our guests’ stays to help make them feel as comfortable as possible. He discards pantry items after every departure but tends to leave items that he feels may be useful for future guests. As for storage, we are a family of five and while there would certainly never be enough storage if this were a full-time home, we have designed it to have ample storage for our vacationing. It is hard for me to track now the time of your stay but we had recently had a new baby, so I had not travelled to Dublin as often as I normally do to check on the house, but we aim to maintain rigorous cleaning and maintenance standards for every guest. The house was an architecturally designed gut renovation seven years ago. Over the years it has been regularly featured in the press and continues to be requested for interior and design publications as well as Interiors TV shows, so its appearance is crucial to us and as such we endeavor to keep it in pristine shape. I am so sorry that this was not your experience. I am glad that you found our neighbors as wonderful as we do. They certainly go a long way in contributing to the serenity and charm of our Dublin city haven. Best wishes, Dolores

Village Atmosphere Still Close to City Center

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this apartment for four nights in June of 2013. We knew we would be pounding the streets of Dublin every day but wanted something on the outskirts of the city with a little rural feel. The Rathgar/Rathmines area provided the perfect relief from the crowds and bustle of Temple Bar and O'Connell Street. There is a supermarket close by and several restaurants that have an upscale feel with good food and drink. There is also fast food Thai joint that is good for eat in or take out on the same block. Colm, our host graciously met us after an early morning arrival so we could drop our bags and do a little shopping to set up the kitchen for the week. We mostly covered our breakfasts with delicious fresh breads, butter, jam, coffee and fresh fruit...all available in the neighborhood. We went in to the city center for trips to museums, galleries, a show at the Gaity Theatre and of course the obligatory hunt for live music in the Temple Bar area. It's good to have a comprehensive map of Dublin and the environs, because most of the tourist maps just show the city center and don't include the Rathgar area and Highfield Road and Highfield Grove. This is important so you have a good feeling for which streets to find the buses into the city. The 15 and the 140 are good bets and one is to the right on Highfield Road and the other is to the left. The LUAS Green Line (electric rail) is also a short walk and ends at St. Stephen's Green which was also next to the Gaity Theatre. Cabs are quite reasonable and the drivers honest, reliable and always up for a good conversation, so jump in one at the end of the day and it's a short sprint to the flat.

The kitchen is well stocked and the center table became our command center to study our maps and plan our days in town and day trips farther afield. Powerscourt and Wicklow are a short ride outside the city but get you into the countryside so you can experience more of the real green of the emerald Isle.

The washer/dryer is a wonderful addition for travelers moving on to other destinations and hoping to get a clean pair of socks for the trip. As other reviewers have mentioned it is essential to read the appliance manual because European washing machines can be daunting to the uninitiated.

This was our first VRBO rental outside the Continental USA and it was a delight. It was just my wife and myself but the flat is spacious and can handle children or other family members.
