About Melissa and David Mohon

We love the Acadia area and vacation ourselves there every year. One of our favorite things to do in the area is to take the Carriage Rides from Wildwood Stables to Jordan Pond Teahouse.

Melissa and David Mohon purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Melissa and David Mohon chose Bar Harbor - Mount Desert Island

I was stationed in Maine while in the Navy and fell in love with Acadia National Park and the Mount Desert Island region. I wanted to have a place for my family to vacation in the summer and also to provide a relaxing and comfortable place for other families to enjoy while visiting all the attractions of the Acadia area!

This House has it all!

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully decorated house with all the amenities, and then some. The owners have thought of everything. There are so many personalized touches that you feel like you are staying at a 5 star hotel. The location is just a short 5 min or less drive to Acadia Park entrance and about 10 min drive to Bar Harbor. I would definitely stay there again.

These annual guests love Harbor Star Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We've reviewed Harbor Star in the past, having enjoyed vacations there for several years. The only thing we can add is that we appreciate the cottage more every time we go!

Melissa and David leave absolutely nothing undone to ensure their guests' pleasure and comfort. They are a joy to work with -- incredible, really -- and we feel more like family than customers. The cottage has always been amazingly equipped, but somehow they manage to make improvements every year.

What we love most about Harbor Star is the quiet time we spend on the deck. While seated there, enjoying that tranquil setting, it is not unusual to have deer pass right by or to hear a woodpecker hard at work in one of the trees. It is such a change from our "other" life; we always leave knowing that we've been on vacation.

We absolutely cannot imagine anyone's being disappointed by Harbor Star Cottage, and we look forward to returning next year.

A excellent choice for location and comfort.

  • 5 of 5

Excellent choice for our family. We were very comfortable during our time at your house and would not hesitate to come back. we were not fortunate to have good weather during our time in Acadia but your cottage was warm and inviting.

nice cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay here. The cottage was clean and very well stocked. Even our ten-year old noted that it came with everything. We definitely made use of the kitchen and propane grill. There were plenty of extra linens and towels, and this house comfortably slept me and my husband, my parents-in-law, and three small children. The two toddler beds and pack-n-play are a huge plus for parents with little ones. The "Port" bedroom comes with a HUGE walk-in closet which would be a big plus for longer stays or people with lots of gear. This cottage would also be a great choice for people who are less likely to venture out some days, with TV, wifi, grill, board and yard games and comfy furnishings for lounging. The oversized chair in the living room was very popular. The washer and dryer are great for keeping up on laundry during your trip, especially after trucking around the park all day. The only downside to this location is the distance from Bar Harbor, the upside is that it gives you easy access to the "quiet" side of the island, and it is still really easy to access the Park, etc. We even got a good look at three deer that wandered right through the yard during dinner!

Our only complaints were a few dirty dishes (just leftovers from the dishwasher) and some mechanical stuff. The heater in the downstairs bathroom didn't work (it was chilly during our time there), and we gave up troubleshooting after we checked the breaker. There is no heat whatsoever in the downstairs bedroom, just the heater on the opposite side of the house in the dining area. My in-laws didn't complain, but some people who might run cold (or winter dwellers)might be affected. Also, there were numerous light bulbs out. Spares were provided, we just didn't bother to change any.

Overall, we were impressed, and would highly recommend!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. Sorry about the bathroom heater but now that we are aware of it, we will get it repaired ASAP. Also, we will consider getting a space heater for the downstairs bedroom for early season renters. We are glad you enjoyed your stay!

Our Best Trip to Acadia: we've been going twice a year for the past ten years

  • 4 of 5

Our arrival was a classic welcome to Acadia - there was a doe in the yard waiting for us when we pulled into the driveway. We arrived quite late. So, the first order of business was getting the kids (3,6,7) to bed. This was the only low point in the entire trip - the carbon monoxide detector was beeping b/c of a low battery, which made it hard to get the kids to bed. Removing it to change the battery resulted in a screeching alarm that set off all the other detectors in the house. We then had to find a screwdriver to remove the battery. Okay, so that was the low point...and the kids don't remember it that way: they remember that they got to stay up late. After that, our vacation was amazing.

The house was perfectly furnished for our family. The kids quickly found a games table and chairs that were their height. They spent hours playing games and making puzzles. There were also toddler toys for our youngest. We forgot two water bottles. The house had them. So, our hike was hydrated. Our son loved playing badminton and wiffleball in the yard. We all enjoyed working our way through the crossword puzzles: there were ones for everyone's skill level.

The place was a great base of operations for our trips around the island. We made all our meals at the house and wandered the island pursuing sea glass, biking, and hiking. It was easy to get to all our favorite places on The Quietside, and the requisite trip over to Bar Harbor was a short drive. All told, we all recommend this cottage for your trip to Acadia: it was as close to perfect as you can get.

I think the best comment of the weekend was when we were packing up, my father-in-law said how much he was looking forward to going again next year. He's traveled to Acadia many times with us before, but he's never said that before. I’m sure his comment is a direct reflection on the cottage.

The Best

  • 5 of 5

Another wonderful week in a great home. This was our second stay at the cottage, and I would recommend it to anyone. The property is clean, homey, and well kept and maintained. A joy to spend time in. It is in a quiet neighborhood, a short drive to Southwest Harbor, and Bar Harbor. Acadia National Park is practically at your doorstep. Thanks to Dave and Melissa for a home away from home.
