We had a great week at Crooked Lake. Even though the cottage is not right on the lake, it worked perfectly. Just a short walk to the lake and with the dock provided we had a great place to dock our boat and jet ski! Cottage was big and easlily handled our large number of visitors. The grills and firepit out back were perfect for some evening activities. The Henry's were always available for any questions. Give this a great recommendation!
Our family had a great week at Crooked Lake Hilltop Retreat! Our adult children are now scattered and it was a perfect central, easy to get to spot for our family vacation. Mike and Peggy were friendly, and very responsive to our questions etc. The home itself was very clean and housed our family nicely and gave us all space and privacy at the same time with 4 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. The backyard was gorgeous and on several mornings we enjoyed our coffee on the porch watching the deer cross the yard. The firepit and backyard BBQ and eating area were enjoyed on several nights too. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals and plenty of room to have some good game nights. Even though it was located across the road from the lake, it had a dock that we just walked across to and left our boat and seadoo tied up to all week without any problems. There was always calm water somewhere on the basins to enjoy our water activities! Others on the lake were friendly and helpful. We would recommend and stay here again!
Mike was great to work with. He answered all of my questions promptly. We very much enjoyed the backyard and fire pit area. The house was well-kept and modern. There was plenty of room for our multi-generational family vacation.
What a great property. The pictures don't begin to help you visualize all that there is to do and see. Very clean, with a new feeling throughout. There was a lot provided - so no need to worry about bringing any essentials. The back yard is a great place to enjoy a good campfire and a great conversation with friends and the deposit was back to us by the end of the week. Owners are very responsive and helpful. We will definitely consider renting there again...
The Hilltop Retreat was absolutely perfect for our Girls Get Away. The accomadations were great and fullfilled all our needs. We are a group of women ranging from ages 21-61, we are all from Northwest Indiana. There was plenty to do. We played golf, did a wine tour, jet skied, rented a boat and spent several hours enjoying the lake. We also enjoyed some local night life. I'm sure the rest of the ladies will agree that a great time was had by everyone. Also Mike and Peggy Henry were great to work with in making our plans. I would highly recommend the Hilltop Retreat for any family or group looking for a great time.
The purpose of our vacation was to have family gatherings and attend a AHS class reunion over a two week period. This property was perfect for our needs but could be expanded, if needed, with the property across the road. There was lake acess but the Stueben County Park and Pokagon State Park beaches were easily accessible and more accommodating for the preschool children's swimming needs that were in our party. Those locations also have excellent play structures for expanded play opportunities. The layout of the house was very accommodating to the eight people that stayed overnight but also for the family gatherings with two decks to allow for additional conversation groups. We were the first to rent the property with the owners doing a great job being ready for the rental. The property will only be enhanced and better with additional landscaping and amenities.
The owners provided excellent customer service and were quick to respond to our needs and wants. The deposits were returned within a week of our return which was appreciated as that has not been in the case with other property rentals. We would recommend this property to friends and would rent again ourselves.
In addition to the beaches previously mentioned we would recommend: Lilly's Produce, Hargar's Meat Market, Caruso's Resturant, Clay's Resturant (for the best pies in Northern Indiana). Samantha's (in Angola) was great for breakfast and lunch. We cooked most of the time and found the kitchen to be very well equipped, as well as equipment for grilling out. Crooked Lake has changed since we enjoyed it as children growing up in Angola with bigger and more substantial properties having been built; but what hasn't changed, is the quality of the beaches, the water clarity, the coziness and the pleasant weather for a summer holiday. It was a pleasure to be back at Crooked Lake instead of the beaches of South Carolina (which are also great).
The property is located in the heart of the lakes region of Steuben County, known as '101 Lakes'. There are year around activities such as Pokagon State Park (Winter ice skating and tobogganing. Spring and Summer boating, skiing, fishing, and horseback riding.) In the Winter you are a short drive away from Michigan's snowmobiling. Summer offers a multitude of lake activities, great golfing, biking, hiking, Satek Winery tours, and
'Fun Spot' Amusement Park and Zoo provides great family fun. Notre Dame is an easy 1 1/2 hour drive and Shipshewana, markets, Amish crafts and restaurants are less than a 1 hour away.
