This is a 'back row' property in the quietest and most northerly community of Playas de Fornells. It benefits from a swimming pool for the exclusive use of Tamarindos residents and sundecks with spectacular sea views. There is a new kitchen and convenient breakfast bar. The balcony is the perfect place to eat, or have a glass of wine, while enjoying the sea views, watching the boats from Fornells. The flat has everything necessary for the perfect holiday. Playas de Fornells is considered to be the most attractive development in Menorca. It has supermarkets, bars, excellent restaurants and is an ideal place to relax and unwind.

The apartment is on the 'back row' of the small community of Tamarindos within the Playas de Fornells development. This means that it is very quiet, and has views across the roofs of the lower flats to the sea. As the flat faces north the balcony remains out of the sun for most of the day, so it is ideal for eating. Outside the front door is a total suntrap, so if you don't feel like going to the beach, you can just park yourself outside and bake quietly in the sun, with a view of the hills behind the apartment. Tamarindos is the most northerly community in Playas de Fornells, so it doesn't get any 'through' traffic, but it is still within walking distance of the supermarkets, bars, and restaurants and even the beach at Cala Tirant, (1.25km, 15-20mins walking) if you want to have a totally laid back holiday and not even hire a car.

Close to Playas de Fornells are some of the most beautiful beaches in Menorca, including the delightful Cala Pregonda. Five minutes by car or a stunning 20 minute walk around the headland is the beautiful fishing village of Fornells, famous for its seafood restaurants and the watersports available in the magnificent bay. 7km away is Es Mercadel, a pretty market town, which has three of the very best restaurants on the island, together with a number of interesting non-tourist shops and art galleries. Es Mercadel is situated at the base of Monte Toro, the highest point on the island, and is famous for its biscuits and pastries.

Menorca is a little jewel of an island, smaller and quieter than Mallorca it is an ideal place for a holiday with its numerous beaches, sunshine and fantastic restaurants. But it is more than just a tourist island, with a thriving shoe industry and cheeses that are famous throughout Spain. If you are driving along the back lanes, you may come across some of the farms that sell their own cheese, always worth a visit. There is plenty of ancient history to explore and enough small shops in boutiques in the main towns to keep shoppers happy. Menorca, the whole island, has been declared a nature reserve by the EU, and it is well deserved with an interesting variety of flora and fauna, as well as geology and birdlife. For those who like walking and/or cycling it is almost perfect. In the apartment there are a number of guidebooks together with specific walking maps and guides.

About Alison Ramage Patterson

After many years living in other countries teaching English we are now settled in Es Mercadal. It's a long way from home for Richard, who's from Canada, but he loves it as much as I do. We're semi-retired now but keep our hand in with some online teaching and materials writing. Mostly we enjoy living here, the walks, the cafes and restaurants and the fabulous environment.

Why Alison Ramage Patterson chose Es Mercadal

I came to Menorca on an impulse in May 1999, I arrived on a Sunday and fell in love with the Island on the Monday during an excursion to Fornells, it was chilly and misty and reminded me of the Peak District!! On Thursday I bought the flat!

It was a reckless purchase, but it was one of the best things I ever did. For years during difficult times in London it was my dream and my escape. Then when I became an English teacher, I was drawn to other parts of Spain and spent a wonderful 5 years living in Barcelona.

Fast forward 12 years and now we are living in Es Mercadal.

Menorca has always felt like home. It casts a simple but strong spell on many people who visit it. Something I hope you will feel too.

What makes this apartment unique

For me the flat immediately had a real positive energy about it. With the hills directly behind and the sea in front. I read many years later that the Chinese believe that this is perfect Feng Shui for a property.

Naturally, all the flats in Playas de Fornells are similar in layout, but the previous owner of this flat. The electrician for the community when it was built, but in the breakfast bar and the charming arches. He also did the paintings of the boats and the countryside which are still in the kitchen and the lounge.

This apartment is cool, yet cosy and comfortable. A perfect place for a holiday stay

Bath towels are provided. The flat is charmingly decorated, with paintings of local views and sculptures from driftwood, and plenty of candles for a romantic dinner on the balcony, it feels like a home, not a rental property. I am always happy to answer any questions, provide more photographs, recommend places to visit and to eat, to enable you to get the most from your holiday. Alison

Nicely tucked away and private

Extremely comfortable, clean and well maintained property. Balcony offers great views and is cool to sit on during hot, sunny days. If, like my husband, you like lots of sun just sit out the front which gets the sun throughout the day.

The fan in the bedroom is a welcome comfort and is virtually silent so remained cool on clammy nights!

The height of the property offers fantastic views but I can see that this could be difficult for the elderly to access via the steps from the car park with suitcases. There is an access via a top car park area but it is a rough path. However, this is the one we used to access local amenities and boy! did we enjoy them. Especially the Okapi Bar and their cocktails and food-we found this on the first night and when we tried others we found that they could not compare so spent our last evenings there.

The local beach is comfortable but basic, no refreshment or toilet facilities unless you walk back towards the main entrance at the beach. Sun beds and a palm leaf parasol are provided for €15 which we did not mind paying for.

The pool facilities at Tamarindos: the pool itself is an excellent size providing a great opportunity to swim lengths. It is of a good depth also. Our only disappointment was that there was no seating around the pool. The area directly around the pool is probably too narrow for a sunbed but there is a terrace area which looks out to the sea which could accommodate seating but it is not provided. We used our towels and a beach mat.

We did walk to Fornells and it does take about 40 minutes each way.

Es Mercadel is close by and if you use the car park at the sport centre on the right as you drive in, it is free and only a short walk to the centre. This also takes you past the supermarket which is extremely reasonable, especially the fresh produce.

All in all an enjoyable stay.

I've looked into the sun lounger situation, as I did think that the community provided some sun loungers. The administrator of the community tells me that many years ago they did have some community sun loungers - but that they 'disappeared' quite quickly. So it was decided not to buy any more communal ones. (Most of the community budget is spent on protecting the buildings from the salt and wind, and there is not a lot left over!!) Thus, those that you see belong to individual flats. I'll look into getting some lightweight sun loungers for the flat, as, obviously, carrying those big heavy white ones down to the pool isn't really an option. Its a great little retreat !

This is my second stay at this apartment. I LOVE IT! It is cosy, it has amazing view of the sea and horizon from the balcony and living room. Its a great little retreat and has real sense of tranquillity. I love also sitting outside the door on the stone seat where the sun comes flooding down. It is very quiet, very private and unique. There is a walk across the rocks to the village of Fornells where there are great restaurants, Sunday vegetable markets, art fairs in summer and coffee shops. I cant wait to stay again.

What a beautiful apartment!

This was our 8th visit to Menorca and won't be our last! The apartment was just lovely. It was like a real home the way it was furnished and I have never stayed anywhere that was so well equipped. You were not left wanting and there was even a kettle and a proper size breadboard!! Well impressed.

The bathroom was a delight and beautiful and I did have one long awaited bath toward the end of our holiday as the weather wasn't so good. I didn't want to waste water, so just had the one. It was a lovely quiet spot to stay.

Wundervolles Apartment mit herrlicher Aussicht

Wir hatten eine tolle Zeit auf Menorca! Wir können das Apartment wärmstens weiter empfehlen, es ist sehr schön gelegen und bietet eine herrliche Aussicht aufs Meer. Das Apartment ist sehr geschmackvoll und mit viel Liebe zum Detail eingerichtet und es ist wirklich alles da was man so braucht.

Really lovely and relaxing

This apartment really lived up to the description. It was clean, well equipped and very nicely decorated, but most of all the location was great with a lovely sea view at the front and a rural setting at the back- perfect. There are great facilities at the resort and the public transport was excellent. Alison is a gem and we have already recommended the apartment to friends.

Une île totalement préservée et facile à vivre

Appartement charmant, lumineux, chaleureux avec une vue exceptionnelle dans un ensemble de logements en escalier dans l'esprit minorquin accroché au relief. Au milieu du "village" une grande piscine ! Nous avons adoré l'île, très préservée, tout y est facile. Quant aux chemins de randonnée, nous sommes déjà prêts à revenir chez Alison pour continuer nos explorations et profiter de ce "sweet home". Les géologues amateurs sont comblés, l'île est un trésor !

The flat is located in the most peaceful of the communities of Playas de Fornells, facing out to sea. There is a sheltered pool for use of community residents only and beautiful landscaped gardens. Within Playas de Fornells are some great cafes and restaurants, both local and international cuisine, some with wonderful terraces with views of the sea or inland. There are also supermarkets if you prefer to cook at home and eat on the terrace. The nearest sandy beach, Cala Tirant, is about 15 minutes away on foot. The pretty village of Fornells is only a short and stunning walk around the headland or 5 minutes by car. 7km south of the flat is Es Mercadel, a small and unspoilt village with some of the best restaurants on the Island. Also the best bakers and coffee shops - beware the patisserie!!!!
