Clean, Homey, Had Everything you could need...striking distance to Lassen

  • 5 of 5

This well built and well maintained property has everything you could possibly need to get away and retreat....plus journey into the Lassen National Forest and Park. Explore the forest, reconnect with your family or stay in and write the great American novel...with cable and wifi.

Owner's Response: Matthew, thank you for your well-written review. Who would have thought that the road through Lassen Park would still be closed at this late date due to snow! I hope you were able to experience Loomis Museum and other areas of Lassen that were accessible. I'm glad that you and your family were able to enjoy Battle Creek Retreat and the natural attractions within an easy drive from BCR.

comfortable cabin in a quiet neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

we spent our 4th thanksgiving in this cabin and again enjoyed every minute. Our time there is always wonderfully peaceful. There are plenty of couches to relax on, read a book, play games, listen to music, or watch movies. The kitchen is fully equipped and we have a blast cooking and baking. Taking walks or hikes either out of the cabin or within a 3-mile radius is very easy and there are many choices. Kathy, the owner, is very dog-friendly and let's us bring all our dogs. Finally, the cabin is clean and cozy, a perfect place to spend time in the mountains.

Owner's Response: Sabine, I think it’s wonderful that you and your friends get together for Thanksgiving every year! I appreciate you choosing Battle Creek Retreat for your holiday get-together, and that BCR meets your needs for outdoor activities and indoor relaxation. It sounds like you all were able to accumulate more fun memories. When you mentioned the good times you had baking and cooking, it reminded me of all the laughing and bonding our family shared in that kitchen! Could you believe the difference in weather compared to your last visit! Thank you for taking such good care of the house. And thank you for your kind review. Regards, Kathy

Owner's Response: Azetta, thank you for your rating and response! I’m so glad the crew was happy with the accommodations. It has to be tough to be on the road with a job, so if they felt at home at Battle Creek Retreat, then our mission has been accomplished. You are clearly very good at what you do and absolutely a delight to work with! We thank you for your booking and for your subsequent booking! Regards, Kathy

Owner's Response: Thank you! I’m so glad you found Battle Creek Retreat to be comfortable, and that you had an enjoyable stay. There’s definitely something about the elevation, the trees, the sounds, the smells, the sights, and the wildlife that makes it feel so inviting and calming. Even though our time spent there involves cleaning, Battle Creek Retreat tends to have a therapeutic effect. My husband and I appreciate your rating and review. Again, thank you! Kathy

A Hiker's Dream House

  • 5 of 5

Five CA & AZ senior men stayed at the Battle Creek Retreat while in Lassen Volcanic NP for our annual hiking trip. We've stayed in many VRBO properties before, but this property was as good as we've experienced. It was well located for our daily drives into the Park; it was beautifully situated on a lovely wooded property, with a great outdoor patio and a meandering stream nearby. The house was as well furnished and appointed as we've seen, with all of the necessities and many that were just added bonuses, like the Lassen-vintage bottle of wine that greeted us when we first arrived and complimentary coffee capsules for the great Kuerig espresso machine - that's just a couple of the generous offerings by Kathleen & John that got our attention & appreciation. Those two really thought of everything that a vacationer would need. The five of us just kept being surprised by the thoughtful furnishings, supplies, and appurtenances. I also need to mention the bunkhouse, which was a perfectly quiet, private sleeping option for one of our group - there was nothing lost by staying in this comfortable bunkhouse. The Lassen hiking trails were great, as was the beautiful environs, but it was wonderful to go back to Battle Creek Retreat, after a hard day of hiking, for a soothing shower, a glass of wine, a bottle of beer (or both) and a relaxing time on the patio or in front of either of 2 large, flat screen televisions before dinner. Thanks, Kathleen & John (& Peggy), for the great experience & memories!

Owner's Response: What a review! Thank you so much. When I see how much our guests enjoy exploring the trails, rivers, lakes, breath-taking vistas, and the year-round beauty of the forests and mountains, I thank my lucky stars that our family moved here in the '60's. There have been so many changes over the years, but the senses experienced by those visiting this area are a constant. It never gets old. When I'm told how much our guests feel welcome at Battle Creek Retreat, I feel emotional pats on the back from my parents. They set the tone. Your review was very detailed, Ron, and very positive. That is so much appreciated. You and your hiking friends treated the place with so much care and respect. I wish I could have met all of you. You seem like quality guys who know how to live life! Again, thank you! Kathleen

Relaxing with lots of thoughtful touches!

  • 5 of 5

The house is spacious, well maintained, and feels like home. The backyard area has plenty of privacy and space for relaxing at the end of the day after exploring Lassen National Park. The kids enjoyed playing in the woods and the creek behind the house. We really appreciated the "welcome home" bottle of wine, how everything in the house was nicely labeled with helpful hints, and the s'mores basket with all the ingredients for s'mores in one place! The fact that there was labeled fire starters, kindling and firewood to help us build our fire in the fire pit is a touch most owners would not have considered. We were constantly impressed with the thoughtfulness of the owners and will definitely recommend this retreat to friends!

Owner's Response: Jaclyn, thank you so much for your review. What a good feeling to know that your children enjoyed playing in the woods and the creek! My sister lives next to Battle Creek Retreat, and her Redding grandchildren can't get enough of the life that the forest has to offer. (At that elevation, there's no poison oak.) Thank you for mentioning the amenities in your review. It's fun to provide certain treats when I know they're being appreciated and enjoyed. I'm glad you and your family were able to experience the uniqueness of Lassen Park. Thanks again, Jaclyn! Kathy

About Kathleen Burwell

My name is Kathleen Burwell; my husband's name is John. John was born and raised in Redding. I moved to Redding with my parents and siblings in 1966. I retired from teaching in 2010 after 37 years. John is a retired general contractor. We have no children but do have several nieces and nephews, and always at least two dogs.

Kathleen Burwell purchased this house in 1973

Why Kathleen Burwell chose Shingletown

My parents bought the property where Battle Creek Retreat stands in 1973. They began building the house in 1976 and completed it in 1977. My mother died in 2000, my father in 2001. The house was left in a trust for nine family members. In 2008 we turned it into a vacation rental. In December of 2013 John and I purchased it from the rest of the family. It has become a fulfilling retirement project.

What makes this house unique

The beauty of the mountains can be found in the many lakes, streams, and forests. The elevation is about 4000 feet, so in a typical year, there is snow in the winter time, allowing for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer time, the main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park. There are several points of interest within an hour's drive of Battle Creek Retreat. The springtime is beautiful with the redbud and dogwood in bloom. The fall is equally as beautiful with the many leaves of brilliant color.

Our property provides activities within a short walk. Battle Creek runs along one border of our property. In fact, our property goes to the middle of the creek. Kids and dogs alike love to play in the creek. Lake McCumber is within walking distance. There are several logging trails where guests can walk their dogs, although no motorized vehicles are allowed.

On the back patio there is a gazebo, a firepit, a picnic table, and a lot of seating. It is enclosed to give it a feel of complete privacy, although a lack of privacy is certainly not an issue at Battle Creek Retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks a lot for the wonderful welcome. The kids and us had a great time and really enjoyed the evening smors by the fire. we are hoping to come back soon and enjoy the cabin and the surrounding scenery.

It is our second time in your cabin and we again had a wonderful time. The kids had a blast and they loved Rebel's Retreat (bunkhouse). We hope to be back soon.
