Imagine yourself turning down a beautiful country lane, majestic weeping willows as you enter, culminating in a quiet cul-de-sac. You open the gate to the driveway of the white cottage and pull in...the neighbor's curious goats come to the fence to greet you! Ahhhh...the country life! In the greenbelt that bounds the famous Oak Creek, there are grass, flowers, trees...not necessarily what you would expect in the High Desert of AZ! However, though we are only about 20 minutes from West Sedona, it is like we are a million miles away from the sidewalks, crowds and condos there.

Allie's Acre is my home; I share my time between AZ and NM, and so I have decided to open my precious cottage to others when I am away. It is just too wonderful to sit empty when I am enjoying my place in Santa Fe! The love and care my guests have shown for my property have confirmed my decision to rent to vacationers from all over the world.

When I first bought Allie's Acre, we loved the peace and quiet of our country cottage, but went into Sedona or Cottonwood to eat out, shop or visit local attractions/attend local events. Seven years later, this area is dotted with some fabulous new restaurants, quaint local wineries, and its own wonderful nature and cultural places of interest...to the extent that we (and our guests) sometimes find that several days have gone by and we haven't yet visited Sedona!

2013 Update: The Cornville/Verde Valley area was just rated in the top 10 places to visit in the US. Validation! Here's what they had to say: Verde Valley, Arizona

Between Phoenix and the Grand Canyon, the Verde Valley is taking off as Arizona’s go-to destination, and not just among the spa and crystal Sedona-fans of years past. The Verde Valley region is beautiful, with green canyons rimmed by red rocks, and towns like Cottonwood, Jerome and Sedona that have long drawn visitors for good food, art and mining lore. But the Verde boost is all about the wine. The new Verde Valley Wine Trail links four new vineyards clustered around Cornville, near Sedona. Most fun is reaching the Alcantara Vineyards… by kayak. Less fun is being the designated kayaker.

Now...back to Allie's Acre: The property feels like your own grassy, tree-filled private park, complete with a charming, comfortable cottage, and famous Oak Creek but a few steps away (the cottage has public access to the creek, if you wish). All the trees keep the property cool...so in the summer, it is much more comfortable here than areas filled with heat-harboring concrete and asphalt.

You open the cottage door and you know that you are 'home'. Blue flowered curtains & pillows, tribal rugs on the floor, and a wood-burning stove beckons from the corner of the sitting room. No gas fireplaces here!! If it is fall or winter, you will find a stocked log rack, so that you can enjoy the warmth of the fire in the cool of the evening. The bathroom is a pleasant surprise...in addition to the stall shower, there is a beautiful black Jacuzzi in the corner of the otherwise simple, lace-curtained lavender room. Perfect to soak in after a long day of hiking!

The tiled kitchen is small but complete...everything about this place, from the rooster plate above the sink to the deer antler in the octagon window, makes you feel at home. The wooden French doors open into a Den/2nd Bedroom...the TV is located behind the closet doors, and the new twin bed offers additional sleeping capacity.

The master bedroom is ample and inviting...a dried wreath over the bed, a quilt to keep you warm. There is also a writing desk in the room, inviting you to document your vacation experiences in your journal...or perhaps complete that writing project you started last year! The sliding glass door leads to to a patio surrounded by trees and flowers...a wonderful place to have a cup of morning coffee! There is a Mexican free-standing river stone fireplace on the patio...another sweet place to spend an evening talking with friends or cuddled up with a special someone. I often love to sit out there alone...warmed by the fire in the chiminea, with a glass of wine and my own thoughts.

The yard is green and has flower beds surrounding the house and patios. I have extra vases in the kitchen, so feel free to enjoy some flowers from the cutting garden while you are there. In the spring there are peaches and apples on the trees!

There are many wonderful experiences to be had in this area of the Verde Valley, which you are much closer to than if you are staying in Sedona: In addition to the local wineries on Page Springs Road (about 5-10 minutes away), Windmill Park, and the great local restaurants 'Up the Creek' and 'Harry's Hideaway', there is a Forest Service Wildlife Viewing Area and a Fish Hatchery nearby, as well.

In nearby Old Town Cottonwood, there are lots of great little stores, restaurants and Wine Tasting venues that don't have the 'cookie cutter' feel like some of the tourist shops in Sedona. The village of Jerome is a 'must see'...an old copper mining town that now houses artists' studios, galleries, restaurants and shops. Camp Verde has some wonderful ruins to explore... Montezuma's Well, Montezuma's Castle, and a little farther out, Tuzigoot. Also, between the cottage and Sedona are Honanki and Palatki, two other beautiful ancient ruins managed by the Forest Service, as well as an incredible hiking experience, Shaman's Cave.

For some night life, Cliff Castle Resort & Casino in Camp Verde (about 15 min. away) has some great restaurants, a bowling alley, and, of course, lots of 'one armed bandits,' if you want to try your luck! The Clarkdale Train offers a sweet ride through the local mountains, with the guide pointing out both historical and natural points of interest...a real treat for train afficionados!

I can help you tailor your experiences to your interests and budgets...just ask! If I don't know the answer to your question, I will be happy to try and get one for you.

Welcome to Garden Lane...and my inviting 'nature retreat' that I love so much!

PLEASE NOTE three important items: I am a medicinal aromatherapist, and I have my own line of pure, Medicinal-grade essences in the home...the vast majority of people (even those who are chemically sensitive) are entranced by and drawn to the completely natural smells that emanate from them (think of slicing an orange or a grapefruit, or the beautiful smell of lavender!). I just want to alert potential guests that I use the essences when I am in the home, and I do have bottles of essences stored there, as well.

Second, the wood-burning stove is the primary heat source for the cottage. It is fully capable of making the entire place toasty!! I do have tower space heaters in both the Master Bedroom and the TV Room/Den/2nd Bedroom, and a 'back up' heater in the Pantry (guests are given full and clear info on how to set this if they choose to use it for heating and/or when they leave the property).

Third, because of the rural nature of the property (there is an old chicken coop and out house at the back of the property, as well as an irrigation ditch on the far right side of the fence line across the pasture), and the fact that I am not 'on site' when my cottage is rented, I was advised by my my insurance company to accept only adults and older teens as renters. My Santa Fe casita (VRBO 328669) is family-friendly, but unfortunately, I am not able to offer that at the Cottage.

About Audre Gutierrez

I am a medicinal aromatherapist who shares my time between two of the most wonderful places in the world...Sedona, AZ and Santa Fe, NM! I had been visiting Sedona for many years, and my business partner and I decided to move here and establish our business, Wisdom of the Earth Plant & Tree Essences, in 2001. Sedona and the lovely towns that surround it, like Cornville, Page Springs and Jerome, are magical, friendly and habit-forming! I consider myself truly fortunate to call these two beautiful, enchanting places 'home'.

Audre Gutierrez purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Audre Gutierrez chose Arizona

I bought this little cottage in Cornville, just a few miles from Sedona, about 10 years ago, and totally renovated it. It sits on an acre of irrigated land (quite a rarity in high-desert AZ!) surrounded by tall conifer and deciduous trees...and GRASS! While I love Sedona, and spend a lot of time there, I was always mesmerized by the street I now live on...tall weeping willows grace the entrance to my street, and all of the unique, un-assuming, 'neat as a pin' homes say 'community' to me...we all care for and take care of each other. Away from the hub-bub of Sedona, nestled in the rolling hills and wineries of the Page Springs area, this little place I call home is truly my 'little slice of heaven'. I named it Allie's Acre...because it reminds me of my grandmother's home and property that I always loved as a child.

What makes this cottage unique

The serenity of this area, coupled with the goats and chickens some of my neighbors have, creates a really special feeling and atmosphere that is rare anywhere, but especially in the middle of Arizona. You can sit on one of the two patios and reflect, or take advantage of the many educational/spiritual/cultural events offered in the Sedona/Verde Valley area (like Jazz on the Rocks and the Sedona Marathon).

We are within several miles of several wineries, Indian ruins, and even the beautiful Cliff Castle Casino is a 20 minute drive from the house! (Even if you don't like games of chance, their restaurant, Storytellers, is quite special.) The Yavapai-Apache nation is nearby, and offers tours and activities, as well. To the north is Sedona (about a 15 minute wonderfully scenic drive) and Oak Creek Canyon, the scenic route to Flagstaff. Within the Canyon are incredible rock formations, hiking trails galore, shops, some restaurants and beautiful Oak Creek. Have your cameras ready! Sedona proper needs little 'introduction'...great art galleries, quaint and unique shops and restaurants, and a wonderful little playhouse in the Village of Oak Creek called the Canyon Moon Theatre.

There is truly something for everyone, and you can do as much or as little as you desire.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Yes! Yes! Yes! You have filled this place with: beauty, light, plants, colors and LOVE! Thank you.

Situated in the 'green belt' along Oak Creek (the creek is one property away from mine). A key to the 'common entrance' gate is available to guests. Take the short walk down the path to the creek. It is incredibly cool and lovely down by the water! This is also a 'flood irrigated' area...so everyone has grass and trees...an oasis in the middle of the beautiful AZ high desert!

Totally charming!

  • 5 of 5

This was a fantastic little getaway for our northern Arizona trip! We had activities in Sedona and Flagstaff, and wanted to be away from the bustle and traffic - the cottage was perfect. LOVED the darling goats next door that would play and watch us. The owner was completely accommodating, and wanted to ensure that our needs were taken care of. We also went to dinner at "Up the Creek" about 5-ish miles away which was fantastic.

SOOOOOO Peaceful!!!

  • 5 of 5

This weekend was the best ever!!! My husband and I have been needing a weekend getaway and boy was this weekend worth every penny! We were able to take our two small dogs with us, sit back and just relax. Cornville is such a quiet little town and Allie's Acre is located on the best street in town. The street is lined with big, beautiful weeping willows as well as pines etc. The lawns are lush and green. There is a wonderful gazebo located on the property and is perfect for reading and watching the dogs play. The cottage is clean, comfortable and oh so welcoming! Corresponding with the owner was painless and made everything so easy for us to just get away and relax. My husband and I were able to rest, watch a movie, and yet still get out and about to enjoy the local environment. We had a wonderful romantic dinner at Up The Creek, a peaceful afternoon reading the paper in the gazebo and a great day exploring Cottonwood and Sedona - both located just a short drive away. We would love to come again some time and do it all over! I am glad we live just a short one hour drive away - making our dream of returning not just a possibility, but a reality.

A slice of heaven on earth

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I wanted to get away from the heat and hustle of Las Vegas. Allie's Acre was the most perfect spot. Nestle in a quite lane surrounded by the beauty of nature. 2 goats as neighbors and 2 cows across the street. The house was very cosy, had a great energy and is an amazing tranquil spot for a getaway. Our doggies loved playing in the yard which was very secure with fence all around the acreage. Would definitely go back again. Sedona was a 20 minute car ride away but there are many little places in Cornville to try. We loved Harry's Hideaway and also the bakery in the gas station had really great smoothies.

Best Mother's Day Getaway...EVER!

  • 5 of 5

Allie's Acre has a sense of serenity and small-town feel from the moment you drive up. Quiet---private---peaceful---and the most homey feeling of "ohhh...we could live here" imaginable! My daughter and I had a delightful time visiting Page Springs Cellars and Vineyard, shopping the boutiques in Sedona, strolling Old Town Cottonwood, dining at area restaurants (breakfast at Red Rooster in Cottonwood!!! YUM!!!), and simply relaxing at the cottage on the stormy Sunday afternoon. I almost hate to tell everyone how great it is because then I am afraid the price will skyrocket, and it will be booked for months to come. Sigh.
