About Michael Tougias
I'm an author of several travel books and several true stories of survival and adventure. It was my dream to buy a house on a lake near the ocean so that I could enjoy the best of both worlds. My idea of a great day is to take a morning bike ride, go to one of the nearby beaches to body surf the waves or fish for striped bass, and then return to my cottage for a swim in the crystal clear waters of the lake. And of course, this is all capped off with drinks on the deck while watching the sun set on the lake and a dinner cooked on the outdoor gas grill.
Michael Tougias purchased this House in 2008
Why Michael Tougias chose Ponds of Plymouth
While I love Cape Cod, I can't stand its traffic. So from my Plymouth house I can avoid the Cape during high traffic periods (weekends when people are going to rentals is the worst), yet I can drive to the Cape in just 10 -15 minutes at a time that is convenient for me. (There is so much to do near my house, I find that many family members and guests only go to the Cape for a couple brief visits during a week's stay, and instead spend most of their time on the lake or doing an activity in Plymouth or Wareham.) And for those folks that want to go into Boston, our location has easy access to the highway or commuter trains and the trip is much shorter than from the Cape. We give discount extended stays (2 weeks or more).
What makes this House unique
The road our house is on is extremely quiet, and the lake (Ezekial Pond) is peaceful. It is a good size at 36 acres (and 26 feet deep), with boating limited to residents. This makes Ezekial Pond pefect for kayaking, canoeing, swimming and fishing (great largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing). I also like the fact that while you feel like you are way out in the country, a ten minute drive brings you to Route 25/6 which has every store and restaurant imaginable on it. This roadway also has activities for the kids such as mini golf, go-carts, a waterpark etc. At the house I've put together an entire booklet of some of my favorite places and few secret spots with maps and phone numbers. I want guests to have a week that has a mixture of fun, discovery, and relaxation. My whole approach is that when renters love their vacation at my lake house we all win -- those same people will want to return in future years, and each year they find new things to do and learn their own favorite places.

Our dream vacation on a lake
We approached our new vacation spot with a bit of hesitation after hitting a dirt road just before getting there. However, we soon realized that the road was a perfect transition to the relaxation spot we had been looking for. With the rustic feel of an escape home, the 3 bedroom house allowed for my wife & I to take over the master bedroom. The main floor also included a sizable kitchen, living room and a 4 season porch/ game room whose many windows allowed for a palatial view of the lake. Our young adult children went downstairs to find 2 bedrooms with a separate living area which allowed for their own space.
This is the first time my wife & I were able to find a comfortable, well laid out vacation home with central A/C ( A need for me due to severe asthma). Stepping out from the porch will bring you onto a large deck with summer chairs, table and grill, bringing you even closer to Lake Ezekiel. We brought home many memories and stories of our adventures on the lake in the supplied canoes and kayak.
Thank you to Mike & Allison for allowing our family to take part in such a special place!
We love it when visitors take full advantage of everything the house and lake has to offer! And making memories is what it is all about. Thank you so much!
Awesome family vacation
We had a great time. The house was very nice and comfortable. It is placed beautifully on the lake. Our whole family loved it.
Great pond front getaway - near saltwater beaches
Quiet neighborhood and beautiful kitchen leading to a four season porch and a great deck looking out over the water - great sunsets! Swimming is great in the pond and it gradually gets deep, so perfect for the kids to play under your watchful eye from the deck. Good bass fishing on the pond and just minutes to many Cape Cod beaches. we loved having a salt water day and then coming back to play in the freshwater pond. Thanks for a great stay!
You are very welcome!
We had an amazing week at this well-equipped lakefront home. I enjoyed the spacious layout of the kitchen and the large deck that overlooks Ezekiel Pond. No need for reservations when you have lakefront dining at your back doorstep. The dirt paths around the neighborhood were great for biking. We caught quite a few largemouth and smallmouth bass in the pond from the canoes that were provided and from the dock. We are a family of 5+ we had two extra college students that came to stay for a few nights and the sleeping quarters were perfect. We did a daytrip to the beach, which was only about 15 minutes by car. Perfect location if your looking to sightsee or just relax. This home exceeded our expectations. We were just looking for a place to stay while visiting our son who was studying over the summer in Buzzards Bay. It was a total retreat for my husband and myself and a quiet comfortable place for our son to study. We hope to return in the spring.
Property is nice but needs work
My wife and I enjoyed our time at this cottage, but, it is a little run down and not exactly as pictures show. Now unfortunately the owner decided not to refund our damage deposit because his couch, which is a fake leather is pealing from wear and tear, and I guess we weren't supposed to sit on it.The material on the seats are extremely thin and pealing. Not sure why we have to pay for this.
If you decide to rent , just be aware that you may not get your deposit back.
And one other thing ,it was just the wife and I, both of us are 60 plus year olds..We surely didn't deliberately damage his worn out couch.
We have had over 60 renters in the past few years and I've always returned full security deposit. All the renters were great and respected out home. This was the first time I've ever had serious damage.
Awesome lake house vacation
My husband and I, with our 2 teenage daughters, and my 80-year old mother-in-law stayed at Mike's house in June of 2017. My mother-in-law got the bedroom on the 1st floor next to the bathroom while the rest of us took the 2 bedrooms downstairs. The house was clean although there was a musty smell when we first arrived. After opening up the windows, it was very manageable. I think the smell was also caused by the water. There was a rusty odor in the water that I smelled after doing the laundry. All in all, it's not anything that deterred us from having a great vacation. We did bring our own bed sheets, blankets, and bath and beach towels to use which helped a lot. The lake/pond is awesome.
The water in front of the house is nice and clean. My husband and I took the kayak out and paddled around the pond on a couple mornings and we decided the water in front of our house was even better than other parts of the pond. Mike has a canoe, a kayak, a paddle board type of thing that we all had a great time enjoying. The deck is nice and large and I enjoyed having my breakfast and coffee every morning on the deck looking at the lake. We also enjoyed cooking on the grill on the deck, then playing cards inside. It was very buggy at night due to the trees so we basically stayed in after dark. The hammock was awesome too, my husband enjoyed laying on it quite often. We also found a great spot to hang an eno that we brought ourselves.
There were extra paper towel, toilet paper, paper plates and bowls, etc. for our use.
One thing though that it's not really walkable to anywhere. If there was a way, I never figured it out. We brought our bikes but never rode them because I couldn't find a safe route to ride to anywhere but within the lake area. I took a walk on the mostly dirt road around the lake which was very nice but no sidewalk on the big streets before turning into the lake.
Wish we had another week there. It was so nice just to relax in the water.
For those who love bike riding bring a bike rack -- two nearby paved trails are the Cape Cod Canal bike path (Bourne) and the Shining Sea Bike Path (Falmouth). If you like dirt path mountain biking, the road in front of our house has side trails off it that go through the woods and cranberry bogs of Plymouth, Bourne and Wareham. Myles Standish State Forest, about 5 miles away, also has both paved and dirt bike paths.
Quiet setting on a beautiful lake. Peaceful neighborhood nestled in woodlands with cranberry bogs and trails. Just five miles away are all the stores and restaurants you need. Ten minute drive to ocean and Cape Cod.
