Unlike the lodges in the area, this self-catering house offers you the ability to cook and eat what you want - when you want, come and go as you please and save money in the process. Your Bighorn Valley experience will be so much better then just renting a motel room!
This home is located just 2 miles from the 'Bighorn' river fishing access (known as '13 mile' to the locals) and is 12 miles from Ft. Smith. It offers all of the creature comforts you're looking for. You'll be able to spend the day on the water and be 'home' within minutes to a hot shower, ice cold beverage and grill that fish you just caught.
The warm water in the Bighorn river and many farmers' fields attracts many Canada geese during the winter, making the valley a prime area for waterfowl hunters and upland game birds trive in the many fields and pastures of the farms and ranches.
The home is situated on a large parcel of land, so you'll have lots of privacy, peace and quiet. The parking area is huge and there is plenty of room for your boats and pickup trucks.
The house has 2 bedrooms, and I have them set up with 2 full-size beds in each room. It will sleep 4 adults comfortably, with a maximum of 8. Very large groups will have restrictions of water use, and require special instructions so the septic system isn't overloaded.
Hello! My name is Barbara. I was born and raised in Big Horn County, Montana. My parents were ranchers, and they taught my sisters and I the value of hard work! It was an awesome way to grow up - out in the country, with our horses as our best friends, swimming in Rotten Grass Creek and at Willow Creek Dam, building fence, putting up hay, moving cattle to our summer pasture in the Big Horn Mountains. We went to school at Lodge Grass (it was better then), and we all were in sports and kept very busy. Like I said, it was a great way to grow up!
Since then, I've moved around a little; but Big Horn County holds a special place in my heart - especially Rotten Grass Creek valley, Soap Creek, and the 'Esp Range' and Little Bull Elk Ridge on the mountain.
Currently, I live in Billings and work at a oil refinery, pulling wrenches.
Barbara purchased this house in 2009
This property was my parent's retirement home. The house was designed by Mom and reflects the rancher in her. That generation spent a lot of time at the kitchen table, drinking coffee, visiting with neighbors and playing cards; so the kitchen/dining room is the centerpiece of the house. She also designed in a huge utility room and lots of storage. I believe all of this combines to make a perfect vacation home, plus I couldn't have hoped for a better location!
Some of the most enjoyable moments I have at this property are when I have the binoculars up to my eyes. There is always something to look at. There is a great horned owl that can be seen most mornings on a fence post in the coulee. We've seen many colorful songbirds flitting around eating bugs. The Bighorn mountains are beautiful at any time of day, but it's fun to watch storms come across from Wyoming. I've also seen quite a few white tail deer browsing in the pasture area and a coyote or two hunting along. (No big game hunting is allowed on the Crow Reservation, sorry.)
It was perfect. The early mornings, still fresh, when the sun painted the fields to the west in a golden hue. The 'homecoming' in the evening from the hustle and bustle of Crow Fair to the quiet of 'our' place. The house itself, so spacious and well equipped. And, of course, Barb: even sending me Montana tourist brochures all the way to Switzerland so that I arrived well informed!
My husband and I stayed for almost three weeks. We enjoyed it so much that we are seriously thinking about renewing the experience.
our stay in the bighorn valley was excellent. the house is equipped with everything imaginable for your stay. great for a couple, two couples, or two to four guys. there are two bedrooms and four double beds. we barbq'd pork loin one night and even found a meat thermometer. only one slight negative, the water pressure is a bit lacking. otherwise, we loved it.
Barb provided everything we needed. The house was clean and comfortable and we were able to relax and enjoy the fishing.
Recently stayed for 7 nights during a waterfowl hunting trip. With 3 people, 1 dog, a boat and tons of gear, we have always had problems with space. Not here! Plenty of room to keep the wet & dirty stuff outside and safe.
You will be very happy to return "home" each day to the comfortable furnishings and secluded location. If it's been a long day, you will most likely find yourself asleep in the big cushy chairs after a big meal cooked in a kitchen that has everything.
Barbara was on top of things from the minute I first contacted her. You don't need to worry about a thing. We started making plans to return next year on the drive back to Hardin.
Thanks for a great stay!
A great home away from home! This rental is equipped with everything you need to have a truly relaxing stay. The photos do not depict how clean and well maintained this home is. Barb is just an email away, answering questions and helping you plan the trip before you come and while you are there visiting. (I received a packet of brochures on attractions in the Fort Smith area weeks before my arrival date.) I would definitely recommend this property to a family looking for some quality time together or to a group of friends wanting to explore the Bighorn area!
The pictures and description doesn't due justice to how nice and well equiped the house is for guests.
The house was spotlessly clean when we arrived will all the necessary amenities and more. The location is perfect, private, nice big clean patios with tables and chairs, BBQ and most importantly
close to the BIG HORN RIVER fishing access. By the way the fishing was great lots of Browns and
Rainbows. We will definitely be back next year if not sooner.
Thank you again Barbara your home and detailed insutructions and all the amenities made our stay PERFECT!!
