About Honore Lee

I am fortunate to claim Grand Haven as my hometown. This is a beautiful lake-shore community where family and friends reside and gather year-round. After university in Kalamazoo, my husband and I settled in that vibrant community to work and raise our family. He works in real estate and I am an artist and educator. The locale here is perfectly suited to our professional endeavors and our interests. We both enjoy kayaking on the big lake, walking the beach and cycling.

Why Honore Lee chose Grand Haven

This property has been in my family for over 100 years. The original home was a small, single-story cottage with a wide front porch on a sandy dune. While the dune is still sandy, the home not be maintained as it was, and so we tore it down and re-built on the same site. It now is oriented toward the lake, with a full second floor and an open plan on the main level. We love it here, and to share the lake breezes and comfortable setting with travelers.

What makes this house unique

Grand Haven can be a bustling town in the summer, and we feel that our dune-side location offers privacy and relaxation while still within walking distance of the action. In addition, the beach is expansive and inviting, just a downhill walk away! A favorite sunset viewing spot is at the top of the public staircase, "Weber's Stairs"-- grab a drink and join in for a toast to the day!

Our home is attractive, yet comfortable and appropriate for all ages. We have a fire bowl outside for evening marshmallow roasts, and a nice deck for late-night gatherings or early-morning coffee. Grilling is a popular choice after a day sight-seeing and beach-combing. Bikes are available for cruising the area and the boogie boards are fun for bouncing in the waves.

Wedding Weekend at Virginia House

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay at this lovely house! Our son and daughter and their spouses came into Michigan for a family wedding, and It was so nice for all of our family (6 of us) to stay together and relax instead of being in hotel rooms. The house was perfect for morning coffee on the deck and a fire pit at night. Walking along the beach was an extra treat! So nice that there were 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms to accommodate the family, especially when trying to get ready for the wedding! It was a record hot weekend (92 and 93 degreees during the days) and there was no air conditioning, but thankfully the breeze off of the lake and overhead fans made it comfortable at night for sleeping. All the family enjoyed themselves and we may just have to do a family weekend again in the future if it works! Thank you for a lovely time!

perfectly furnished.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is beautifully situated on a quiet wooded sand dune lot with a filtered view of Lake Michigan. Its three bedrooms and three baths fit our needs perfectly. The kitchen is fully stocked and the living area comfortable. We enjoyed the porches and fire pit at night. My forty-something daughters and my husband and I hope to return.

Very nice property with all the amenities.

  • 5 of 5

We had a very nice stay. Very nice property with all the amenities. Very clean, homeowners are very kind and courteous. very quiet area. May I suggest longer or darker curtains on the bedroom and bathroom windows? We usually like to sleep in a darkened room and there was a streetlight outside our bedroom. It was not that big of a deal but just a suggestion. Thank you for a nice home to enjoy.

Dodged a bullet in July!

  • 5 of 5

While we were enjoying mild temperatures in the 70s and low 80s, back home near St. Louis they were experiencing record triple digit highs! We sat on the deck at the Virginia House viewing Lake Michigan and listening to the pleasant sounds of the waves on the shore. Wish our stay could have been longer.

PERFECT for kids!

  • 5 of 5

Location is excellent. Walk down a couple flights of steps, and you're at the beach. Hop in the car and you're a few minutes from town (you could walk, but it would take a bit with little kids).

No road noise; very quiet.

Extremely clean and tastefully decorated.

Someone commented about how this is not an ideal place for kids; I disagree. Our two young daughters (5 and 2) had an amazing time. The large trestle table was a hit with them for rainy day crafts and had a bee-line view to the wall-mounted TV chock full of endless Netflix and Amazon Prime cartoons. There were toys near the front door, and a hammock swing on the deck for them to fight over. Whoever lost that battle was relegated to the equally-fun tree swing in the sand-filled side yard, replete with fire pit. The third bedroom upstairs had three twin beds to play host to their first same-room sleepover. On our drive back home, all they talked about is going back to their "new house."

We'll be back!
