WELCOME TO SIDEWAYS IN SEWANEE! Reserving for 2016 only. 2017 Reservations may be available at the start of 2017.
Sideways is a RUSTIC, but quaint little 3 bedroom, 1 bath house right smack in the middle of campus (the University of the South campus, that is). It's a 115 year old gem of a cottage whose poor old bones just aren't as straight as they once were.
While a bit crooked it may be, it definitely won't let you down when it comes to offering you relaxation on a budget and a great location to reconnect with alumni and friends! It's located within walking distance to the local coffee shop (Stirling's) and the local bar (Shenanigan's), as well as countless hiking trails, golf and tennis courts, lakes for fishing, and just about every University building.
It is NOT the Hilton. It's far from it. This is an OLD house that is used as a vacation home on many weekends by the owners and their spouses and looks more like a casual old vacation cabin than a fancy bed and breakfast, so please set your expectations accordingly. Think crooked floors, drafty windows, occasionally a tad musty, but with a great set of porches. If you like camping in a tent, this is one step above that! The inside looks like a box of Crayola Crayons exploded there (see photos). It was that way when we bought it many years ago and every time we think of painting it something more normal, somebody comes in and tells us we're crazy. We are starting to think maybe they are the crazy ones, but for now, prepare to wear your sunglasses inside...it's bright!
Also, it's in a WOODED area, so while it will be clean and fresh when you arrive, there is always a chance that a little bug or daddy long legs could wander in. If this kind of thing makes you queasy and sends you running to a therapist, then no hard feelings, but this probably isn't the house for you. You probably landed here because it was the least expensive option you saw, so know that there are plenty of other more expensive houses in the area on VRBO that will satisfy those with more of a Kardashian lifestyle. Don't get us wrong, Sideways is cute, it just ain't fancy. :)
Please EMAIL (don't call) for specific questions regarding renting. If we need to talk by phone, that's not a problem, but we will respond much faster by email (somebody helps us with that). Renting is allowed for University sponsored events only (if you have a question about that, just email us). Pricing is $195 per night with a 2-night minimum except during Commencement/Graduation each year. Due to the high demand, the rate for Commencement is $1500 flat rate for minimum 6 nights/7 days.
WE REQUIRE A TWO-NIGHT MINIMUM STAY.
The property is located at 121 Palmetto Ave, Sewanee, TN 37375.

We look forward to letting you be a part of Sideways!
Zach Goodyear and Scott Evans are business partners and at Parks Real Estate Services in Nashville, TN. They both graduated from Sewanee and own the house together with their wives.
The Owner purchased this house in 2006
You can't beat a week or weekend in Sewanee. You'll leave feeling stress free and ready to come back again soon! It's a good family getaway or a couples retreat. Again, it's not fancy, but it's a rustic cabin close to everything. That's why we love it.
Eating at Shenanigan's, Crust, Ivy Wild, and The Blue Chair. Hiking (the bookstore has a great book called 'Go Take A Hike' that is cheap and shows all of the great hikes in the area - pick up a copy when you're there!). If you're into high adventure, the Ocoee river is a decent drive, but doable. We don't rock climb, but for people who do there are apparently some good sites around.
This spot is a great location for visiting kids at the college when you have a group that needs 3 bedrooms. It's rustic, but the description is very accurate. If you are persnickedy or traveling with folks who are, this might not be for you. But, we loved being walking distance to Sterlings and our daughter's dorm. I've stayed here twice, and it's got everything we need.
What a great house! It was everything that it was advertised to be. Fun colors, funky vibe, perfect for A Sewanee weekend with room to entertain.
Great A/C, comfortable beds, walking distance to everything on campus. We will rent this home again!
We had a great time during our stay. The house was stocked with all the supplies anyone would need. The beds were very comfortable and everything worked out well.
Thank you for the great time.
Perfect for bringing a group to visit to Sewanee campus. The house is well located and you will be spending time exploring the mountain, not so much hanging out at the house. Others describe the place accurately as rustic. Enjoyed the stay.
If you loved summer camp as a kid, you will like Sideways. It is definitely rustic, but the sheets are clean and the beds are comfy for a good night's sleep after hiking all day. The owners need to spruce up the outside because the exterior looks a little spooky when you first see it. The photo of the exterior on VRBO is misleading.
My family went to Sewanee and they were thrilled for us to meet there and spend the weekend together. Everything was just as advertised and we had a good time. We took walks and toured the campus. I was especially fascinated with the glass recycling and from my expedition there I learned about "growlers".
