About Jonathan Rick

Hello, I'm a 65 year old snowbird spending 6 months in Ft. Lauderdale & traveling and 6 months in the Berkshires. I love South Egremont. Lots of beauty and really close to everything. I love to cook so my kitchen is well outfitted. I also will cater meals if you like. If you like to walk or hike this is the place for you and yet we are very close to Great Barrington. The view from this property is outstanding and setting is magical!

Jonathan Rick purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Jonathan Rick chose Berkshires

I have lived in the Berkshires since 1973 and before that I grew up in Sharon, CT just over the border line into CT. I love this area the natural beauty and the amazing amount of attractions available here.

What makes this cabin unique

Peace & quiet & lots of nature.

Iconic Berkshire experience

  • 5 of 5

A friend and I found this cabin to be even better than the accurate description in the listing. Yes, the cabin is vintage-but-updated with a great view and location. But it is also a space, inside and out, with the perfect ambience for a visitor who seeks comfort and beauty in the midst of glorious hills and woods. We weren't here to cook, but the kitchen is one where good cooking happens, so chefs will love it. The screen porch was our hangout when at home; probably the stone fireplace would be the centerpiece in winter. Jonathan is a thoughtful and skillful host. We recommend it most enthusiastically!

1. The house hadn’t been cleaned; it had cobwebs and dust everywhere crumbs in the kitchen and on the tables. The fridge hadn’t been cleaned. First thing I had to do was clean the kitchen and surfaces they were unusable, and throw out rotting food and old pizza boxes so we could use the fridge. The trash from previous residents had not been cleared.

2. Beds are used and unmade and the linen was dirty. There was no new clean bed linen to be found in the house so I had to do laundry and make the beds myself.

3. The Internet was not working. The reason was that the BILL HAD NOT BEEN PAID for the Internet or the cable and there was no Internet or cable for our whole stay. Given the poor cell reception in the area we are completely cut off. And had to walk 500 meters out of the house to write each message. My friends had to work on Monday July 3rd remotely, and that’s the reason we rented a place with wifi. Their work was completely disrupted.

4. The igniter on the grill was broken and it was unusable.

5. After 10-15 attempts to reach the owner on the phone (he didn’t take our calls) and 5 emails later, we gave up trying to contact him. We managed to contact a maintenance person listed on the rental. He was surprised there was anyone on the property, he said he had not been told to clean it and let anyone in, and couldn’t contact the owner. For three days the maintenance staff visited the apartment, attempting to solve the problems, but without any success. For three days we had cleaners, maintenance people, electricians, just parading through the property disrupting our privacy and vacation. Instead of a vacation it felt like I was taking care of someone else’s home and paying for all the stress.

6. On the last day of our stay, the grill became usable and someone finally came to clean the house after we had already cleaned the whole house to make it usable. Other problems, like internet were left unresolved.

Throughout this process we were told different excuses by different staff – the owner was sick, out of town, he was in the hospital, his partner was in the hospital etc. We never heard a word from the owner. On our last day the maintenance staff assured us that this will be reported to the owner and we will have an adjustment and refund from him. It has been one week since we left the property and we have not heard from the owner. I am filing a complaint and I hope they blacklist this owner and property and stop fooling people.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry for this unfortunate situation. While on vacation in Norway my husband developed a severe lung infection on the ship. this led to AFIB which resulted in cardiac arrest which led to oxygen deprivation which led to my husband going into a deep coma. I have recently given him over to hospice to help with the his final days. I admit I was not dealing with the tenant well during this time period and if you will let me I will give you a full return of your money. If have been renting out the property since 1995 with over 40, 5 star reviews. Again my sincere apologies. To make the situation worse I have been locked out of my acct. with VRBO & Home Away, Ive tried to reach out a couple of times but under the circumstances I guess I failed. Please let me know how to return your rental money with my sincere apologies, Jonathan Rick I have bought a new grill and instructed VRBO .com to provide me with you =r information so I can send you a refund for the total amount you paid.

The place is idyllic.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at the cabin. The place is idyllic. Snow had fallen a day before, so we enjoyed warm drinks by the fire. With the town nearby we went out for dinner and had plenty of choices. The cabin is great, beautiful, and with the screened in porch, perfect for all season.

The perfect cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a mountain getaway to celebrate our first anniversary - a little cabin in the woods with a big fireplace where we could relax with our dog, Ajax. Jonathan's cabin is everything we could have asked for. Beautifully situated in the woods of the Berkshire hills, you feel like you're alone. Views for miles. The cabin is cozy with all the amenities you could want. We cooked dinner there every night as well as breakfast. Used the fireplace all three nights, the wi-fi and the video set up every day. Although it feels like you're away from everything, it's a quick 7-minute drive to town. Jonathan was great with getting us in - emailing and texting directions as well as restaurant and grocery store recommendations. We now know where to go when we need a getaway in the mountains. Thanks, Jonathan, for enabling such a lovely anniversary weekend.

"Fair Rising" was very warm and inviting, clean, and fully stocked with all the comforts of home. My husband and I and our two female Bichon Frise really enjoyed ourselves and felt right at home. We both lead very busy and hectic lifestyles and it felt great to just step away from our everyday routines and just enjoy our time together with our little girls. The area is safe and conveniently located to restaurants, supermarkets, stores, gas stations, and much more. It was wonderful coming up to the Berkshires this time of the year (October) to see the changing of the leaves. We will definitely come again during the summer months to witness all the lush green trees, manicured yard, and the adjacent meadows. The views went on for miles and miles. We will be sure to recommend "Fair Rising" to all of our friends and family. We would like to thank Jonathan Rick for sharing his beautiful cabin with us and for all to enjoy. He was very informative and easily reachable by email.
