Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday condo in Tybee Island - The Herons' Nest

Condo, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Designed for two, the Herons' Nest condo is a private and unique hideaway. Nestled in Tybee's historical Venetian Terrace District and sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Back River Inlet the Herons' Nest offers a quiet retreat for honeymoons, anniversaries and rest and relaxation for hardworking couples. Lovingly designed by Tybee artists, Fred and Malinda Urvant, the condo reflects their eclectic Art-Deco style of design. Original paintings by the late Soho artist Larry Urvant and photographs by Fred Urvant adorn the walls. Restored Art-Deco furnishings and white tile floors complete the condo's cozy design.

Play on Tybee's scenic Back River Beaches and return to your own private tropical garden to rest and relax. Enjoy a cool drink on your spacious screened porch or soak in the warm waters of your own private 4-person Jacuzzi. Rejuvenate in a soft-water shower and wrap yourself in fluffy towels of Egyptian cotton and sleep on European style linens. Luxury at the beach is only a moment away during your stay at the Herons' Nest.

We invite you to experience the true flavor of Tybee. Beautiful beaches, scenic landscapes, historic sites, excellent cuisine and a laid-back 1950's culture. Since the early 1900's Tybee has been called a utopia and we could not agree more. Please join us at the Herons' Nest where pleasant memories begin.

About Malinda Urvant

Fred and I are both transplants from the East Coast who met in Atlanta. Our dream was to return to the Atlantic Ocean and in 1994 we began a search for the perfect spot. I had been retired from Dupont Corp. after 20 years and Fred was ready to make a career change. Our search ended on Tybee in the Historic Back River District. My mother moved from Canada and settled on Tybee with us and my son and grandchildren settled in the city of Savannah.

Malinda Urvant purchased this condo in 1995

Why Malinda Urvant chose Coastal Georgia

Tybee was the perfect little beach city, quiet, picture perfect and so small that no one lived more than a few blocks from the beach. Housing values had not exploded yet and you were able to get a good value in a fixer upper.

** fast forward almost 20 years** Tybee is still the perfect little beach city and has retained it's 1950's atmosphere.

What makes this condo unique

You only have to spend a few hours on Tybee to know that this Island is a one of a kind spot and be captured by it's unique culture. Close to Savannah and activities; Tybee offers a peaceful contrast. A calm, quiet and peaceful atmosphere is abundant. Walking the beach, riding bikes and watching sunsets is complimented by the generous and friendly nature of Tybee's local population who feel just grateful that they are able to reside on this little piece of paradise.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We came here for Tom's 30th birthday weekend. We had never bee to Tybee before. All the reviews on the Herons' Nest were accurate! The Urvants have thought of everything. We enjoyed riding the bicycles to our destinations and the cooler fit perfectly in the bicycle baskets. The restaurants were great. We ate at the Breakfast Club, Fannies and the Crab Shack. The bed was so comfortable. Tom has back problems and I did not hear him complain once. We also enjoyed the hot tub to relax after our day at the beach. Thank you so much for your hospitality. The only thing we would have changed was our length of stay. We're already planning our next trip.

My daughter and I had the most wonderful stay at The Heron's Nest. Everything that you might need was provided. It was a very short bike ride (owner's provided two bikes which we thoroughly enjoyed) to the back river beach. And, if you prefer a little bit of a more crowded area, the front beach is only a few more blocks away. The quiet, relaxing ambience that Tybee Island provides was good for the soul. Everyone was so nice to us on the island, and the Urvants were most welcoming and gave us restaurant recommendations and information about what to do while on the island. If you want "upscale" restaurants, Savannah is only a short drive away, otherwise the local restaurants have very good food and a relaxing, right-at-home beach atmosphere. Looking forward to our next visit to Tybee--we will definitely vacation here again!

The View from Heron's Nest

  • 4 of 5

The Heron's Nest truly has a cozy, beach charm to it. It's set away from the main strip so it's perfectly quiet and relaxing. And it's just a few blocks to two of the beaches. It's not a bad walk, unless you have any physical impediment (such as hip or knee pain). However, it's just as easy to drive to the beaches or even to the beautiful Tybee Island Lighthouse. There's plenty of easy-to-find parking. Just make sure to put enough money into Tybee's parking pay stations. It's easy to not account for enough time thus earning a ticket if just a few minutes late. The Heron's Nest does have a couple of bikes for visitors to use. However, the bikes were a little rusty and the chain was out of socket on one of the bikes so we didn't feel comfortable taking them for a spin. While the outdoor patio had plenty of foliage and shade, it was the screened-in porch that provided the perfect option to enjoy the outdoors while comfortable enough to curl up with a good book (or iPad). The kitchen area is the epitome of galley-style. It's fine to fry up a couple of eggs or heat up some hot dogs. If you're looking to "eat in" to save on the cost of dining out, however, the kitchen is best designed for the basics. There's also doors on the kitchen to hide it away, which prove cumbersome in a small space. The living room was great to lounge when needing to go into full air-conditioning mode, a necessity in hot July temperatures. The bedroom was calming, and the bed was, to quote Goldilocks, "just right." Not too hard. Not too soft. It was the perfect night's sleep. The owners could not have been nicer or more accommodating. They provided great tips and pointers on places to go, restaurants to try and every suggestion was spot-on. And they really do have everything you could possibly need for a getaway. They've thought of it all. It's especially appreciated when you realize you forgot to pack your beach towels, like we did. And the bottle of wine they provided us was a lovely touch. We would certainly return for another visit to The Heron's Nest.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed the Herons' Nest and Tybee Island. We thank you for your observation on our bicycles. The salt air rusts and destroys bikes so they do not last long on Tybee. We have ordered a new set of yellow Mango Bikes from the Keys and will have those available when you return. Hope to see you soon. Fred and Malinda

15th Year Anniversary!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I celebrated our 15th year anniversary at the Heron's Nest and it was amazing. It was so peaceful and quiet. Malinda made sure we had everything we needed for our visit even sent Mr. Fred down some aloe for my husband when he got a little too much sun. We loved that everything was within walking distance or a short bike ride. Wonderful host and wonderful Hideaway we will visit again!!!!!!

Fantastic vacation getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Once again a wonderful vacation getaway on Tybee at the Heron's Nest. We shelled and flew kites on the beach and soaked up the sun and surf. Pleasant afternoon storms enjoyed on the back porch cooled things off until it was time to grill a steak or some shrimp. Every need has already been thought of by Fred and Melinda. We will be back for our winter break and definitely plan another weeklong stay in the summertime!

The perfect escape!

  • 5 of 5

Simply wonderful. The location, the surroundings, the place itself and of course the owners themselves. All perfect.

The house is stocked with everything you'd ever need, little personal touches which make the place feel like home. I wish we had stayed longer. Thank you guys. We will be back. :)
