Hummingbird House is a new villa with ocean views and a private swimming pool just a two-minute walk from Bottom Bay Beach - an out-of-the-way 150 meter strip of breathtaking white sand and coconut trees sandwiched between two sea cliffs. It is arguably the most beautiful beach in Barbados.
The villa is available for rentals of five days or more and features three air-conditioned bedrooms and a well-appointed, nicely equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances. The living room has comfy lounge seating for six with a widescreen LCD HDTV and the master bedroom features an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet. The spacious covered back patio is exposed to a refreshing sea breeze and overlooks a private pool with beautiful ocean views.
The Bottom Bay Region:
Bottom Bay is on the southeast coast of Barbados in the parish of St Philip, a scenic out-of-the-way area in eastern Barbados. As Barbados is only about 21 miles long (North-to-South) by 14 miles wide (East-to-West), nothing on the island is too far away, and most places are within an easy 30-minute drive. Much of the sea coast in St. Philip is made up of a series of scenic, ragged coastal cliffs that are punctuated occasionally by idyllic white-sand beaches such as Bottom Bay (which is in our opinion the most beautiful of these - although we're admittedly a bit biased).
While most of the big hotels and resorts on the island are situated along the west coast, the quieter southeast coast and the east coast offer the breathtaking views and rugged natural scenery that make Barbados an island paradise. In addition to the picturesque Bottom Bay Beach, the world-famous Crane Beach and Sam Lords Castle beachfront are within 10 minutes drive. If you're looking for fine dining nearby, the Crane Resort has two aclaimed restaurants, and the busier south and west coasts are 20-30 minutes drive away. We highly recommend the inexpensive, low-key nightly "Fish-Fry" at Oistins (on the south coast in Christ Church), home of the Island's biggest fish market.
Bridgetown's harbor and shopping are a 25-30 minute drive away (if you avoid rush hour traffic), and renowned golf courses at the Barbados Golf Club and Sandy Lane Resort (where Tiger Woods was married) are just 15 & 30 minutes away, respectively.
We highly recommend renting a car for getting around the island, but regular buses are also available and taxis can be called as alternatives. Many car rental companies will drop off and pick up cars to our villa, making the experience fairly painless.
Our wonderful experience started with Jan and John, the couple that manage the property. They had asked for our flight information and were expecting us when we showed up in the driveway. Jan and John made sure that we knew everything about the property, the area and gave us great tips on what to see and do during our stay. Their welcome was the prelude to the warm and friendly hospitality that is prevalent on this island.
The property is very well maintained. Even though there is an indoor dining area, we ate, sat and gathered exclusively at the outdoor dining room table in the covered area by the pool. The kitchen was well stocked and we especially enjoyed the fridge that spit out plenty of crushed ice that made a great base for our ``Hummingbird Rum Punch``. Although there is air conditioning, after the first couple of nights, we acclimatized and just let the ocean breeze that blew through the open windows cool us down.
Stepping outside through the double French doors each morning, we were greeted by the sunrise, a magnificent view of the ocean breaking over the offshore reef in the distance and the sounds of the surf.
We often heard comments from the locals that Bottom Bay was the best beach on the island; and we can attest to that. The cove is picturesque; the sand is beautiful, the water clear blue and the beach extremely clean. The ocean is a little rougher on the south eastern coast but our group enjoyed playing in the surf.
A rental car is a must. While it took a little getting used to driving on the “wrong side” of the road, the drivers are very courteous and make allowances for tourists. You will get lost! But who cares, the island is small and even a series of wrong turns won’t get you too far off track.
So much to do – not enough time. Don’t miss: Oistins Friday night party, the BBQ fish fry near the villa at the Church, St. Lawrence Gap (night life and restaurants). Drive the island. We especially enjoyed our coastal trip around the entire island. The view from the northern cliffs around Cluffs Bay is breathtaking and stopping off at Round House on the east coast for Coconut pie rounded out the day as the sun set on the surfers riding the waves below. Our favorite restaurants were L’Azure at the Crane (it was our anniversary), Pisces in the St Lawrence Gap, Round House and hanging out on Cutters’ patio.
We had a great time and look forward to returning to Hummingbird House.
It was a relaxing week at bottom bay. The property is on a good site, with cooling breezes. It was clean and very comfortable. Thanks a lot also Jon and Jan, who looked after us. It was really great.
We visited this villa for a week in November as a very last minute get away. We were a bit concerned about the distance and travel time for just a week, but it was not a problem. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
We have visited the area before, so we were familiar with the surroundings. and we were not disappointed. We would love to wake up to that view every morning.
Our first visit to Barbados was to Holetown, which we liked very much, but we prefer the South East Coast as it is more "genuine".
To be fair we hardly spent any time inside the villa except to sleep and prepare meals. We spent all our time outside which has a sizeable garden and pleasant patio.
It has to be said there was considerable building work going on next door one side and two doors up in the other direction, so it did get quite noisy at times. This is obviously out of the control of the owners. That said, when the builders were not there and during their lunch break, you could hear a pin drop it is so peaceful. The builder is building the properties for his son and daughter, so is under pressure to complete for Christmas. They should hopefully be pretty much finished, so it should no longer be an issue
The burning question is, would we go back......
We certainly will be!!!!
Take to heart when the owners say, " a scenic out-of-the-way area in eastern Barbados. " We greatly enjoyed the quiet and lack of crowds. However, this means driving to everything. There are no restaurants, bars, shops within walking distance. If you are looking for a place to relax, with lots of quiet, and the ability to get to empty beaches this is perfect. If you want the flexibility to walk to bars, restaurants or be in the thick of things, it won't work. We used Hummingbird House as a base for day trips and loved coming home to quiet evenings spent on the porch with a nice breeze.
All of the amenities in the house are great. TV with cable, laptop with free wi fi, and the AC in the bed rooms worked great. The kitchen was well equipped with a fridge, microwave, coffee maker, washer/dryer. They could maybe use a few more plates and cutlery. The pool isn't huge, but is nice and deep and good for relaxing and playing with the kids.
Barbados in general exceeded my expectations, and so did Hummingbird House. For Barbados the weather was much better than I anticipated, nice cool breezes and no oppressive humidity. Diving was good with a ton of sea life, and snorkeling with the turtles was a major trip highlight. Negatives would be more litter than I would like to see around beaches. Also, traffic in the main areas was much worse than I expected. Around Hastings, St Lawrence Gap....
We were in Barbados for our second time and the first time we stayed at the Crane. We did so again for the first week, then decided to extend our stay by moving to the Hummingbird House at Bottom Bay.
Upon our arrival, after being almost too pampered at the Crane, we were not sure of our surroundings in a modest, more remote neighborhood on the island. But a good night's sleep took care of that! The Hummingbird House is a clean, comfortable and convenient residence near a few beautiful beaches, and not too far from the Crane and shopping at Six Roads—but a car here is a must. We quickly met Jan and John, the caretakers who were also one of the first residents of this neighborhood, and they were delightful. The second night there we had a small barbecue for friends and they joined in the fun. John stopped by a couple of times after that to clean the pool, but never intrusive at all.
The house has air conditioning but we never turned it on, as the breeze here is delightful. The house is fairly well equipped and the wifi was better than expected, but I wouldn't count on streaming your favorite movies... The kitchen is well equipped and having an outdoor shower really helped to keep the sand out of the house. The neighborhood has a lot of houses pretty close together, but was still very quiet for the most part. There are signs for video surveillance on the street light posts, but I'm not sure where they go to.
We met other neighbors as well: a couple who do their own gardening offered us a huge bag of beautiful lettuce at a very reasonable price. Much better and cheaper than at the market. Don't let the local entrepreneurs at the beach bother you. If you want their help they'll charge a modest amount and be helpful and friendly. If you don't want their help, just smile and tell them you're fine and they'll leave you alone. Petty theft is the major crime problem on the island, so just keep your valuables at home or close to you on the beach.
All in all, after our arrival hesitations, we found the house to be pleasant, comfortable; and the neighborhood to be welcoming and safe. Recommended.
We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend staying here. You will need a car to travel around the island but we loved having one to get around.
Jan and John who are the property managers were super friendly and very welcoming.
The villa is very well equipped had everything you needed the only thing I would say negative is that we wished we were told that monday mornings there is a guy that comes to do yard work and he starts super early so we wished we had known and could have planned out night better.....but other then that we loved being there and the beach is super close and beautiful.....I am already missing it and can't wait to return oneday and would recommend our friends and family to stay at The Hummingbird Villa.
We ate at The Crane L'azure restaurant a few times super yummy, also try Cutters which is close to The Crane, also we tried The Cliffs near Holetown which was excellent it's expensive, The Tiki Bar at Accura Beach and Champers has an awesome sunset. We also did Oistins on Friday night which is a must!!
Barbados is a wonderful place to visit beautiful beaches and the people are super friendly.....you will have an excellent time!
