|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Full luxury in breathtaking natural beauty. Remote and private. So quiet you can hear your heart beat. At night, no city lights disturb your view of the star-studded sky.
From this 1,475 square foot Casita, you'll enjoy panoramic 360-degree views: Abiquiu Lake, miles of mesas, rolling hills, and the magnificent red cliffs surrounding the famous Ghost Ranch. To the south you'll see the 10,000-foot mountain known as El Pedernal, which Georgia O'Keefe made famous in her paintings, along with much of the near landscape.
Our Casita was built in 2008, and designed by a local architect in a southwestern yet modern style. It's fully furnished for comfort. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances, including a Bosch gas stove with heavy gauge grills for those who really love to cook.
Check out the Master bathroom: you can choose between a slate shower or a deep soaking tub to soothe your body after an invigorating hike in the nearby Jemez Mountains. Besides the 2 bedrooms with Queen beds, there is a queen bed sofa in the Great Room with spectacular views of the lake and Ghost ranch.

My wife and I have been visiting Northern New Mexico for almost 30 years. The skies, the red rocks, the mesas, the food, the locals, the hiking, the skiing…. are all so inviting. Finally, we decided that it was time to buy a place, not only to use as a getaway for ourselves, but for friends and family alike. We also want to introduce others to Abiquiu and Northern NM, so we’ve decided to make this a vacation getaway for you as well. We know you’ll be enchanted by NM as we have been.
As a British family, that has now spent several long summers visiting America, we try always to stay in rental homes rather than in hotels. We were always a little unsure of what the frequently-used word 'awesome' meant, but now we know. This house, perched on a bluff, overlooking Lake Abiquiu, with panoramic views, truly inspires 'awe'! In the evenings we were treated to lightning shows on several sides of the mountains circling us; every night we gazed at the stars, it could not have been more blissful.
It is a cosy house, cleverly but perfectly designed in a circle, with very comfortable amenities. If its privacy you want, look no further, and although another reviewer suggested stocking up on food before you arrive, we travelled about most days, and found the small shop in Abiquiu on the way home had plenty to suffice. Even the mile or two of un-tarred road leading up to the house wasn't a problem for us.
The owners were incredibly helpful before we arrived, and we are so grateful for all the communication with great tips and hints. We had a marvellous horseriding trek at Ghost Ranch, and on our way back from the amazing water pools at Ojo Caliente, pulled off the
road to watch a spectacular thunder storm with the biggest hailstones we have ever seen. As the sun glints off the lake and the colourful rocks around it, the view from the house could tranfix us for hours in the evenings!
We stayed at this house as a little piece of luxury before heading to the Sangre de Christo mountains as volunteers at the Philmont Scout Camp, and as geologists we would have happily spent many more days enjoying the beautiful scenery and bountiful rocks around Abiquiu. We would love to be able to come back here again one day!
We were looking for a place to stay for a couple of nights after days of snow adventure at the Taos Ski Valley. My husband and I stumbled upon Vista de Lago and the pictures really captivated us. We've rented cabins and condos before but never tried a house surrounded by serene nature, away from the crowd! We had the 3 kids (teenagers) with us, and our Goldendoodle. The drive from Taos was already scenic but we were in awe as soon as we entered the Abiquiu lake area. It was a sunny afternoon when we arrived and everyone took their phones right away to take pictures of the hills and views of the lake! My 2 girls started collecting rocks and making rock formations! Even our dog was inspecting the rocks and the new terrain, running around freely! At night we were worried the kids will be bored because there was no cable, but who would need cable?!! After dinner we just chilled and chatted for hours, then watched a movie together from the DVD selection available. In the morning we watched the sunrise together and hiked around the area after a good breakfast. It was chilly in the morning but eventually warmed up to become an absolute perfect day. We were a bit worried about cayotes (from another review) and heard a couple of howling and bear-like sounds at night but realized that the community was fenced so should be safe. We were still careful though during our strolls as we had our dog with us unleashed. On the day of our checkout it started snowing and it was another sight to enjoy! Thanks to Larry for giving us this experience and sharing their beautiful house! He was quick to respond and gave us all needed info. We definitely recommend this vacation home and hope to return soon!
Our few days in Vista de Lago were magical-- the views out of every window were breathtaking. We toured around Northern NM during the day (Taos, Ghost Ranch, etc.), but I hope to return for another trip to simply sit and read and look out the window and not move from the home until it is time to leave! It is a truly an inspirational spot. The house itself was very comfortable and tastefully decorated, with everything you might need. It is remote (thus the peacefulness and views), but the directions that the owner gave were easy to follow. Another note-- we had both a small child and an elderly parent with us and the house (no steps inside or outside) was easy for both to manage. An A+ and we hope to return.
We just ended our 5 night stay for the Thanksgiving holiday. It was honestly heartbreaking to have to leave. The house, scenery and hiking opportunities were so much more than we imagined. Vista de Lago has all of the comforts of home and the view is stunning. We enjoyed relaxing in front of the fire after days of long hikes. The kitchen was packed with everything we could have needed and the bed was very comfy!
We had our Golden Retrievers with us and they loved running the expansive property and chasing Jack Rabbits. We did see a couple of Coyotes so we're careful about letting them not get out of sight.
There are many fantastic hiking places that are not too far of a drive. Each one we did was well worth it. We had thanksgiving dinner at Ranco de Chimayo and it was a great choice!
We hope to go back again someday.
We really liked the house and the view. It had everything for a relaxing getaway. It's amazing to be able to watch the weather across the lake moving along the ridge. Late August was a very comfortable time to visit. The area is much cooler than Houston in August. We had one problem with the guest bathroom shower not working, but we didn't really need it with just the 2 of us. Larry says it is fixed, we should have said something while we were there, but we didn't really need it and thought it was a known issue. Sorry, Larry, we'll do better next time. The only other issue was a not so friendly animal visitor on the porch at night, the flashlights are there for a reason, use them when going out in the dark to see the stars, it's a wilderness type area.
The area has a lot to explore, the Ghost Ranch is a truly special area. Even if you aren't big fan of Georgia O'keefe's artwork, the colors of the rocks and dirt in the area in relation to the paintings is interesting. Also a trip down to Los Alamos and Bandelier was a good day trip. Be sure to think out meals in advance and take all your supplies. Bode's has a lot of stuff, but the drive in and out would take up a lot of your leisure time. Thanks again. Kathy and Dan
WOW!! What a special place Vista de Lago is! We have visited the Abiquiu area several times over the past 10 years, but had always stayed in Santa Fe. We decided this trip needed to be different...a bit more remote, somewhere we could reconnect with the beauty of northern New Mexico. We hit the jackpot! Although the road in was a bit bumpy, the journey was worth it. We actually had trouble unpacking the car because we kept getting distracted by one view after another. The house was the cleanest we have ever rented, and well-stocked and well-appointed. We had a laundry list of places we wanted to visit and things to do, but after the first 48 hours found it difficult to leave the mesa. Larry and Laurie gave great restaurant recommendations-we loved El Bruno's and El Paragua. If you are looking for a place to leave the world as you know it behind, bask in the beauty of those gorgeous mountains and reconnect with each other, this is the place for you. But you better hurry up before we beat you to it!
