Bedrooms 2
Space 1,475 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Full luxury in breathtaking natural beauty. Remote and private. So quiet you can hear your heart beat. At night, no city lights disturb your view of the star-studded sky.

From this 1,475 square foot Casita, you'll enjoy panoramic 360-degree views: Abiquiu Lake, miles of mesas, rolling hills, and the magnificent red cliffs surrounding the famous Ghost Ranch. To the south you'll see the 10,000-foot mountain known as El Pedernal, which Georgia O'Keefe made famous in her paintings, along with much of the near landscape.

Our Casita was built in 2008, and designed by a local architect in a southwestern yet modern style. It's fully furnished for comfort. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances, including a Bosch gas stove with heavy gauge grills for those who really love to cook.

Check out the Master bathroom: you can choose between a slate shower or a deep soaking tub to soothe your body after an invigorating hike in the nearby Jemez Mountains. Besides the 2 bedrooms with Queen beds, there is a queen bed sofa in the Great Room with spectacular views of the lake and Ghost ranch.

Why The Owner chose New Mexico

My wife and I have been visiting Northern New Mexico for almost 30 years. The skies, the red rocks, the mesas, the food, the locals, the hiking, the skiing…. are all so inviting. Finally, we decided that it was time to buy a place, not only to use as a getaway for ourselves, but for friends and family alike. We also want to introduce others to Abiquiu and Northern NM, so we’ve decided to make this a vacation getaway for you as well. We know you’ll be enchanted by NM as we have been.

This home has left me at a loss for words. I thought of every superlative I know to describe the experience of being at Vista de Lago, and while they would all be appropriate, none can truly capture the special magic of this spot. Nothing quite prepares you for the sweeping views of the countryside or the organic way the house takes advantage of its situation high on the mesa. This is truly a perfect marriage of nature and architecture. It is, quite simply, the most comfortable and comforting place I have ever spent 5 days. The owners have provided everything you might need and it is all in good working order. The walk to the Lake is 15 minutes and especially beautiful late in the day. Plaza Blanca is 20 minutes by car and truly not to be missed. But what I really recommend is arriving with enough food and drink to allow you to stay put for as long as possible. You will want to watch sunrise from the portal and then move to catch sunset from one of the west-facing porches. In between you will be overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of what lies before you, and the amazing way your hosts have maximized your opportunity to enjoy it all. Sound like I am raving? Well, I am. We are now eager to experience Vista de Lago in all its seasons. Staying here is an experience you will never forget.

Owner's Response: Hi Pat, Thank you so much for your kind words about Vista de Lago. Yeah, we find it very difficult to leave our little Casita. Yes, there are SO many wonderful things to do (Ghost Ranch, the Lake, Georgia O'Keeffe's studio, hiking, the Monastery, etc.) And yet more often than not, we just can't bring ourselves to leave for even a few hours. It's just so peaceful...so satisfying to just take it all in from our little spot on top of the Mesa. It's actually even harder to tear ourselves away when we have to leave to catch a plane. So you are welcome back anytime, and we look forward to your return. All the best, Larry and Laurie

Enchanting, Relaxing, Peaceful!

  • 5 of 5

When the loudest "noise" for 5 days is the sound of the wings of Hummingbirds, you know you are in for a fabulously relaxing time away from the hustle and bustle of reality. We stayed for 5 nights from 9/4 to 9/9 at Vista de Lago. My husband was still on the mend from a knee replacement so we really didn't venture out but that was just fine... as other reviewers stated - get your groceries, settle in and enjoy! The view is spectacular, the place is so very comfortable, you have no other option but to relax. A few things for fellow travelers - when we went, there were 2 couches - which was a blessing since we were really just chilling and watching movies much of the times - the pictures only show 1 couch. Also, we flew into Albuquerque and it sounded to me like I could pick from any number of grocery stores in Santa Fe -- I expected Santa Fe to be much bigger - and perhaps it is but the road we came through didn't yield any obvious grocery stores. We actually went through town and had to circle back and ask - so if you are planning on food shopping in Santa Fe - make sure you know where you are going!! They are the only tips I can offer (aside from when you are looking out from the house, the gate you see to the right is NOT the one you want - yes we got a little lost but we were so, so very happy when we found our way back to the blue markers - just follow those - thank you Larry - much needed) just enjoy the view, enjoy our company and rest, relax and rejuvenate! Hope to return again someday!

Visit de Largo is an amazing retreat space! The home is spacious with incredible views of the lake and surrounding vistas. All was in working order and the furnishings were comfortable and clean. The area is great for hiking, biking, kayaking, and exploring. A true gem of a property!

Cant think of a more amazing place

  • 5 of 5

After spending two months in various parts of New Mexico, we can say there is nothing quite like Larry and Laurie’s incredible location off the lake. However, let’s start with the home’s owners, Larry and Laurie.

We started talking to them about renting their home months before arriving. Larry was very easy to speak with and, you could tell by the way he spoke about his house, that he took a lot of pride in it and wanted nothing more than for you to enjoy it with the same enthusiasm. He was always quick to return my calls, texts etc and, quite frankly, if he was property manager (he isn’t) I would want him to manage mine - organized, efficient and always with a purpose. In other words, anything he asks from you or has in the house, there is a good reason for it, and as an unorganized, fly-by-the-seat of the pants type of guy, I got it :-)

Whether you come from ABQ or Santa Fe, the drive is just spectacular. Yes, a few miles before the house you get off the highway and onto a gravel road. The short drive off the main road passes prairie dogs and rabbits, all living at the base of the valley. Once through the locked gate the road gets a little rougher, but seriously, unless you are driving a corvette, this is not a big deal. In fact, I would argue that the conditions of city driving in the boroughs of NYC and anywhere near Phila, PA justify an SUV more than up here at Vista de Lago. We drove a Ford Fusion and it was nothing. We were there in July, so i am only speaking for the months sans snow. The house itself is exactly as you see in the pictures. On the highest point in the area with Ghost Ranch on one side, the lake, sweeping vistas that lead your eyes to the 10,000 foot Pedernal - I cannot begin to describe the beauty. The perch from which you see all is so serene. If you are looking to really relax and decompress from the city, this is absolutely one of the most stunning places to do so. The care that Larry and Laurie bring to this home and their concern that you enjoy it as much as they do speaks plenty. I miss Abiquiu and not a day goes by that I don't think of the time we spent there…and what it will be like when we come back in the winter WITH the snow!
