About the property

14BR-51/2 bath Bayfront Vacation Rental, private heated pool, Barrington, RI USA

The BeachMansion, aka The Leroy Fales House, is a multi-gabled, stone and shingle Newport-style English Medieval Tudor Revival mansion built in 1895. This final-and-chimney-peaked Victorian residence features magnificent original details throughout. Situated in Barrington, Rhode Island, this unique beachfront mansion offers 9,000 square feet of living space, including fourteen bedrooms. This gilded age mansion offers a spectacular vacation experience with special features such as original brass fixtures throughout, mahogany details, incredibly ornate hardwood floors, hand-painted stained-glass windows, leather-pressed wallpaper, and an in-ground heated pool. Opulent nineteenth century details combine with luxurious modern amenities to make this a once-in-a-llifetime special occasion location.

There are eight bedrooms on the second floor. Five have either a queen or king bed; three have two twin beds in each. The twin beds are in the original servants’ quarters - ideal for children. The third floor has six bedrooms. Five have either a queen or king bed. The sixth bedroom is in the servants’ quarters; it has two queen beds - generally used by teens or a nanny. There is also a separate television room on the third floor of the servants’ quarters which is often used by those who bring their own video games as a "kids retreat" location.

Eat dinner under a grand, nineteenth-century chandelier in a hand-carved mahogany dining room. Then, retire to the Congressional Room and comfortably lounge in leather furniture by the fireplace as your family relaxes to music or enjoys the 65-inch flat-screen television in the Main Room. Slide one of the solid mahogany pocket doors open to relax in the formal yet cozy sitting room, the Repetti Music Salon, or the ornate and historic Billiard Room. Later, take the grand mahogany-railed staircase up to one of the ten bedrooms and view the sunset over world-famous Narragansett Bay. When the sun is down, you and your family can still enjoy the heated pool in our private backyard.

Every morning or afternoon you'll be just a seventy yard stroll from exclusive Barrington Beach. In the evening, whether you choose to dine inside in a sunny warm Florida room, outside in a giant breezy enclosed porch, or on the covered open-air deck that wraps around the house to the stone portico, you'll have incredible water views with every choice.

The BeachMansion an ideal home for a family to celebrate a special occasion. Few homes offer the amenities for a large gathering that the BeachMansion offers. Your entire group may dine or enjoy a beverage on our large wrap-around porch while watching the sun disappear over Barrington Beach and into Narragansett Bay. Enjoy a cook-out by the private, heated pool (opens Memorial Day, closes Labor Day). The BeachMansion has wireless wifi and flat-screen televisions in many bedrooms.

Less than a two-minute walk from the deck of the BeachMansion, Barrington Beach (free your entire family) is a semi-private family-oriented sandy beach located on picturesque Narragansett Bay. It has beautiful dunes, vegetation, and four acres of sandy shoreline. It offers beautiful scenery, peaceful sunning, and calm waters that make for easy swimming for children. Alcohol and smoking are not permitted. Lifeguards are on duty from June until September. Your family can enjoy all of the facilities, including restrooms, showers, and picnic tables. Barrington Beach is a popular fishing spot. Cast a line into the ocean - people of all ages fish right from the beach. You will often see kiteboarders catching air.

The BeachMansion is an easy 1.3 mile bike ride from a scenic stretch of the East Coast Greenway called the East Bay Bike Path. Its a ribbon of smooth asphalt that takes you near coves and marshes, over bridges, and through state parks. You can bike 7 miles from the front door right into Colt State Park, where the East Bay bike path ends. Or, bike 9 miles north along and over the bay right into downtown Providence.

Just off the bike path, four miles away from the Beachmansion in Bristol, RI is the Audubon Society Environmental Education Center. Owls and falcons fly between trainers during falcon weeks. There are fish, enormous lobsters, and other sea creatures, in addition to their lovely boardwalk along the shoreline of the bay.

Barrington town center is conveniently less than two miles away. There are several nearby golf options, too. Beautiful, historic Providence is a twenty-minute drive away. Providence has a fantastic Children’s Museum (www.childrenmuseum.org), RISD Museum (RISDMuseum.org), and the Roger Williams Park Zoo (RWPZOO.org). Providence also has world-class dining (JBF-nominated chefs), shopping (Providence Place Mall with IMAX), theater (Trinity Repertory Theater), and nightlife. Waterfire is amazing!

If the weather does not cooperate, challenge your housemates to a billiards match on the gorgeous pool table in the ornate Billiard Room. Have an epic hide-and-go-seek throughout four levels of Victorian history. Or, relax inside this historic beach setting by watching a movie on our 65" flat-screen surround sound TV. Reading or iPhoning on the inside or outside wrap-around deck on a rocking chair isn't a bad way to spend an overcast day at the BeachMansion.

There is so much more to say. Please visit our web site at www.BeachMansion.com for more information and photos.

Here's an excerpt of the BeachMansion's history, as is told by Ms. Andrea McHuge in her "Gilded Age Grandeur" 2016 The Bay Magazine article: "During its heyday, the home belonged to Le Roy Fales who served in the Rhode Island General Assembly from 1896 to 1900 representing the city of his birth, Central Falls. Fales’ manufacturing career soared at The Fales & Jenks Machine Company, which his grandfather, a visionary machinist, had founded in the 1830s. Fales managed other business interests as well, and the family name became synonymous with manufacturing in Rhode Island. He moved to Barrington in 1900 and enjoyed the sweeping water views and close proximity to Barrington Beach. It’s easy to imagine Fales receiving distinguished guests in the mansion’s Congressional Room. With its captivating original hand-painted leather wallpaper emblazoned with stately crests, an ornate hand-painted ceiling, hand-carved hearth with a bold mantelpiece and stately stained glass windows, the room offers a palpable air of aristocracy. Today, period furniture is perfectly placed almost as an homage to the mansion’s past."

Here's how Richard Salit described the BeachMansion's neighborhood in his 2017 Providence Journal article: "One thing that isn’t changing is the neighborhood’s desirable location. Davis notes that not only is the beach a short stroll away, you can be downtown — and on the East Bay Bike Path — in just a matter of minutes on foot or bike.

Much of the neighborhood has retained its charm, with plenty of quaint cottages, mature trees, stone walls, even a pond. What other neighborhood has its own tower resembling a windmill? That’s the Leroy Fales Tower, at 17 Lorraine St., which is highlighted in a state Historical Preservation Commission report, along with the Leroy Fales House, a 39-room stone-and-shingle English Medieval revival."

About John Larochelle

My business partner and I have been fortunate to own the BeachMansion since 2002. We reinvest in the BeachMansion, renovating this historic architectural gem, improving the property every year. It has transformed over the years from a faded pink exterior and tired roof to a top-shelf shingled exterior with matching roof. We hope to continue this process for years to come.

My wife and I celebrated our marriage at the BeachMansion in June 2013.

John Larochelle purchased this chalet in 2002

Why John Larochelle chose Barrington

The BeachMansion is a one-of-a-kind Victorian masterpiece. Its a Newport Mansion on a smaller scale. It has some of the first electric lights, one of the first central vacuum systems (brass nozzles), a nineteenth century boiler, an original period ice-box, original servants' bells, original Victorian intercom, and many historic features on each level of the home. This home is a unique piece of history and art.

Few Victorian mansions sit atop a sandy beach in a serene neighborhood. Fewer still have a heated pool, several unique and opulent rooms, a wrap-around deck, and sleeping quarters for an extended family gathering.

Here's what The Bay Magazine wrote about the BeachMansion purchase:

"John LaRochelle first noticed the jaw-dropping 9,000 sq. ft. Victorian-style mansion in the real estate section of The Providence Journal. He put off looking at the home, which John wasn’t sure would act as a residence or investment property, for quite some time, but couldn’t quite shake the unique 1895 Barrington manse.

“When I finally [looked at it], I told the person I was with not to let on to the realtor how nice we would likely think the property was,” tells John. “Once inside, however, I was so amazed by its beauty, I exclaimed, ‘this is a treasure!’” In other words, he was so excited, he just couldn’t hide it. And it’s no surprise. Lavish turn-of-the-century details including ornate moldings throughout, hand-painted stained glass windows, stunning hand-carved hearths, striking archways, original fixtures and breathtaking views were just the beginning."

What makes this chalet unique

The views from the deck are serene, as are the times spent cooking out near the private heated pool in the backyard.

The BeachMansion is in a serene neighborhood. Here is a quote from a January 2017 Providence Journal Article describing the area: "The beach itself has undergone significant improvements in recent years, Hervey says. A major project reduced the amount of paved parking area, some of which had been buckling from erosion, and replaced it with beach grass. A small, old cinderblock bathroom building was torn down and replaced with a new beach pavilion with restrooms and shower facilities. A grassy area in front of the pavilion now plays host to a summer concert series on the beach, which draws sizable crowds.

“It’s become a real popular event,” Hervey says. “People really appreciate the changes.” One thing that isn’t changing is the neighborhood’s desirable location.

The Leroy Fales House is the BeachMansion. You'll be living inside history during your stay.

The entire film, "The Haunting of Alice D" was filmed inside the BeachMansion.

Spacious house with a great view.

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 17 friends loved this house. We rent a different location every winter and gather for board games, food, and trips to see the local breweries such. This is the first year that we've had the amount of room we needed - and then some. The house is vast (you will get lost, but that's fun). There is always a place to sit and join others in a game or conversation. The stove top is fantastic with normal burners as well as a dedicated griddle and grill. Luckily, the weather was nice on our trip but even if it had turned bad, the house was very comfortable when it comes to heating.

I think we will be back next winter. We had a blast.

Not For Us; Just the Facts

  • 1 of 5

To be fair to John, I will stick to facts only. My experience may not be your experience. Spent big bucks for 4 day Christmas stay. Stayed one night and relocated to hotel at added expense. John chose to address our concerns with great empathy but nothing else. Certainly made for a memorable Christmas. Great disappointment with the Beach Mansion.

Owner's Response: I don’t know how to respond to a one-star review from a person who left our home because of a purported ghost. Jeff emailed me after ending his Christmas stay at our house after one night. Jeff moved his family to a hotel in Providence. Here is an excerpt from his email to me: Jeff: “We are a pretty well-balanced family, but there was a door slam in the middle of the night and a strange doorknob shaking incident with my wife. I do not take wasting this type of money lightly. If you want to consider some type of refund, I think that would be the prudent move, but that is up to you. Again, strange incident and our decision to leave. I will say Scott was fantastic.” I guess Jeff was right. It would have been prudent for me to refund some portion of Jeff’s stay based on his family’s fear of a ghost, else I risk getting a one-star review. I tried my best to accommodate Jeff’s concern. Here is an excerpt from my response: John: "It is disheartening to hear that your experience during your first night at the BeachMansion prompted you to move your family to a hotel rather than staying for Christmas Eve and Christmas. No matter what occurred, I feel for you and your family. During my first night at the house, I was alone. It was scary. I slept in the Safari bedroom with the television on (something I never do - I don’t even have TV!) to keep me company and to distract from the noises an old house can make. There are heating-system noises, house-settling noises, and before one knows it, one’s mind begins to hear more noises. I’ve experienced it first-hand, so I know that the first night can be unsettling if one is not used to staying in nineteenth-century houses. I can assure you, however, that I have never seen a ghost or experienced anything other-worldly at the BeachMansion in fifteen years. This is the first time a family has vacated our home because of the intensity of the scariness. May I boldly ask that your family put aside any first-night fears and re-consider staying with us for the remainder of your stay? Perhaps your entire group could sleep in close proximity to one-another?" We go the extra mile to accommodate our guests. All sounds that a 120 year old mansion makes can't be eliminated. The size and layout of this Victorian home causes air drafts that could cause a door to close. We kept the home available for you for the duration of your stay, and suggested that you return. We are hopeful you may reconsider and visit again.

The house met all out expections. I would absolutely rent this home again.

The house is 9k sq ft with each room having such great craftsmanship. We had a large group but enough space to spread out with private bedrooms but able to come together to socialize, dine, and hang out in style.

Fun family time

  • 3 of 5

Our family (lots of adults and many small boys) enjoyed our time at the Beach Mansion. Barrington is a lovely area. If you enjoy taking walks, there are plenty of lovely neighborhoods to explore. The beach in the morning is a peaceful place to be. Unfortunately, the weather was hot and humid. Several of the guests had difficulty sleeping at night because of the overly warm rooms. While there is often a wonderful breeze on the expansive front porch, and the pool was awesome, additional air conditioning units would certainly make for a more comfortable vacation experience.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking time to give feedback regarding your stay at the BeachMansion, Theresa. I am happy you enjoyed your time with us. I agree with you that on the hottest and most humid nights of the year, it can occasionally be warm in our one-hundred-and-twenty-year-old home. While we have air conditioning units in our two biggest bedrooms, we can not have units in many of the other rooms, given the unique, narrow, sometimes rounded Victorian windows of the 1800s. We hope our many fans and a steady breeze from Barrington beach alleviates the heat on the hottest summer nights.

Girl Scout get together

  • 5 of 5

Our Girl Scout troop would like to extend a HUGE thank you to John and David for the wonderful extended weekend that we spent at Mansion House.

We were lucky enough to find Mansion House in our search for a place to have our final gathering before our girls head off to college next year. Once we saw the photos, our girls were set on playing pool in the Billiard room, sharing meals around the large dinning room table and cooking large meals in the beautiful kitchen and on the outdoor grill. The living room was large enough for them all to hang out together, and there were plenty of locations throughout the house for more private gatherings.

With a party of 22, we had beds to spare. Our fear of running out of hot water was unfounded, as we all had hot showers daily and never had to wait in line with 5 showers to choose from. Flat screen TVs were in every room (and a bathroom!) along with a DVD player and hefty sound system in the living room. We were impressed by how clean and warm such an old house could be, and were very comfortable in our surroundings. The one issue we had was a minor one, and was quickly attended to by the caretaker who came over at our convenience to reset the garbage disposal which had merely tripped it's switch. John and David also responded to my inquires very promptly prior to us arriving.

The beach was a stone's throw from our front porch, offering lovely sunsets and a nice place for quiet walks and sand play. I imagine in the warmer weather the beach is ideal for sunbathing and swimming. We were a short drive from the Roger Williams Zoo and about 45 minutes from Newport. The supermarket is a few miles away, as are pizza, ice cream and a creperie! While we had thoughts of also shopping Providence, going bowling and riding on the bike path nearby, we chose to hang out at the house more often than not, enjoying each other's company on the large wrap around porch which was partially enclosed and heated and partially open air.

I'm so pleased that our girls will have such fond memories of their last big trip together. While there was talk of a reunion at your house in four years when they graduate from college, subsets of our group may come back sooner with their own families and friends. Thank you once again for helping to restore this wonderful house, and preserving history for future generations to enjoy.

Family Christmas Gathering

  • 5 of 5

We had our annual family Christmas gathering at Beach Mansion. Three generations ranging in age from infant to 60+ and everyone had a great time. Plenty of bedrooms and had large spaces (great room, dining room and kitchen) for us to cook, dine, relax, play games and basically enjoy each other's company. Lots of areas for the kids to play too...they especially loved hide-and-seek! Many thanks to the owner and caretaker for making the entire process smooth and always being available to answer any question we had prior to and upon our arrival. They were more than accommodating to make our stay a very enjoyable, memorable family weekend!

Rates vary during different seasons. During July and August, only one-week or longer stays will be considered. June is mostly week-long stays only, but exceptions may be made during the beginning of June. Long weekend stays only will be considered in September, October, April, and May. During other months, two-night stays will be considered. It doesn't make economic sense to open the BeachMansion for only one night. The costs of having our dedicated caretaker meet with you at the beginning and end of your stay, of our loyal cleaning crew laundering the bedrooms and cleaning the entire house make one-night events cost-prohibitive.

The BeachMansion requires a NON-REFUNDABLE deposit of $2,500.00 (and a signed lease) to hold your reservation. This fee is NOT REFUNDABLE for any reason. Your reservation is not locked in until the BeachMansion receives a signed lease and a $2,500.00 deposit. The first received deposit and lease secures the property for the requested week.
