About the property

The two apartments are located in Casa Pipistrelli, one of the houses that forms the peaceful hillside hamlet of Peralta which is situated on a south facing hillside above the valley of Camaiore.

Casa Pipistrelli is a three storey house, built on terraced land. This means that the apartments have their own entrances and do not overlook each other. Each apartments has only one bedroom but it is possible to take a separate bedroom with bathroom in the same house, thus offering accommodation for 4 people in either apartment. The two bedrooms take up the second floor of the house. Both additional bedrooms have their own entrances.

The GARDEN APARTMENT takes up the ground floor of Casa Pipistrelli and, as its name suggests, is surrounded by garden: at the back is a paved patio and in the front a shady, grass garden, particularly appreciated on a hot summer day. Both the patio and the front garden have a table so you can choose where to eat! There is a barbecue and garden lounger chairs. The living room opens both back and front onto the garden and has a fireplace for cosy winter evenings. The double bedroom opens onto the front garden and is cool on hot nights. Well equipped kitchen and a bathroom with shower complete the apartment.

The TERRACE APARTMENT takes up the third (top floor) of Casa Pipistrelli. Its entrance is from a path the back of the house. The views over the valley are panoramic and the large terrace is accessed from the back of the apartment. The terrace also has lovely views and is very private. Olive trees provide shade but the terrace is large and so there is also a place to find full sun if you prefer. Sun beds, a dining table and lots of peace and quiet to be found here. Double bedroom; bathroom with shower; dressing area; large living room with kitchenette at one end.

Both apartments have central heating and are very comfortable in winter. Long lets in the winter are possible at very reasonable rates.

There is a shared swimming pool on one of the upper terraces, a tranquil spot with a panoramic view towards the sea.

PERALTA, with medieval origins, was restored over a period of thirty years with love and imagination by international sculptor Fiore de Henriquez. She created a place that is quite unique. Its commanding position gives Peralta stunning panoramic views over the valley to the sea beyond. Terraces of olive groves, orange and lemon trees, bougainvillea, jasmine covering the stone walls makes the hamlet seem like paradise. Fiore’s sculpture and the manner in which she designed and restored Peralta, give the place its very special character and atmosphere. Perfect base for a holiday, far from busy crowds and yet with easy access to all main Tuscany attractions. The town of Camaiore is a ten minute car drive away. It is lovely to return to the peace of Peralta after a busy day.

Peralta has various self catering accommodation located in different houses, lots of shady olive terrace with the large terrace in front of Peralta being a lovely place to sit with a glass of wine, enjoy the sunsets and meet other guests.

ART AT PERALTA: As well as for guests who simply wish to relax and enjoy their surroundings and the pool, Peralta also offers an ideal, inspiring setting for creative people: painting, sculpting, writing. Writers can settle in and write in peace. Lovely walking country with marked trails through the olive groves and hills dense with chestnut trees and known for their wild flowers in spring and autumn. Walks range from 50 minutes to a delightful restaurant in an adjoining village, to three hours up to the peak of the Mount Prana above Peralta.

GROUPS/RETREATS/REUNIONS AT PERALTA Imagine having 18 bedrooms at your disposal for a wonderful weekend family party, for a wedding, or just a reunion of old friends.

Why Kate or Dinah chose Camaiore

International sculptor Fiore de Henriquez was living in the area of Camaiore from the 1960's due to its proximity to the Carrara marble quarries and the bronze foundries of nearby Pietrasanta. In the 1970's she found the small hamlet of Peralta, perched on the hillside above Camaiore. It was remote, served only by a footpath, and the buildings were mainly in ruins - their inhabitants having left in the mid 1950's due to the hard living in the hills. No water nor electricity at this time. Fiore fell in love with the hamlet and managed to gradually buy the various houses. She then set about restoring them and the hamlet and created the very unique place that exists today. She died in 2004 and the hamlet was then taken over by a very good friend of her's who is the current owner. . Repairs and renovations are undertaken where necessary, but the essential essence of the hamlet remains the same as when Fiore was alive. It is the home of her archive and sculptures, which can be seen throughout the grounds and in the various accommodation.

What makes this apartment unique

It is hard to describe the absolute charm and beauty of Peralta and why I am so passionate about it. I now own it and am as much in love with it as Fiore before me. Every corner has its surprises, small details to delight the eye. The wisterias and bougainvilleas offer vibrant colour and essential shade. The views are wonderful, changing with the light, with the weather, with the season. Sunsets are magic. Early morning mist lying in the valley. The sight of Corsica on a clear day. The large bronze sculpture of 'The Phoenix' on the main terrace about to fly off over the valley. Fiore used to say it signifies 'Peralta rising from the ashes'. The many sculptures Fiore left for visitors to enjoy on the terraces. Her private gallery which I love to show to guests and one evening a week, at aperitivo time, I invite any guests staying at Peralta to a viewing of the gallery and Fiore's original house I hope many visitors will find their way to Peralta and enjoy it as much I do ......... possibly even fall in love with it! Guestbook comments from the manager

Alan wrote : Peralta - Just a name that means nothing until you’ve wound your way through the sleepy little town of Camiore with its mom and pop stores bursting with fresh local produce and smiling happy shop keepers. Life moves at its own pace here - and one begins to feel the love of Tuscany. The excitement builds as you drive up steeper and narrower roads hooting at the hairpin bends to alert any oncoming cars, until you reach the parking lot at Peralta. Then the view hits you and its enough to take your breath away. Stretched out before you is a heart aching vista of Tuscan villages and hamlets away to the Mediterean sea with the island of Elba in the distance. You are home, not your home but the home of your heart. Peralta , with its amazing sculptures and ancient buildings so sensitively restored, fulfilling the life vision of Fiore , the artist sculptor who found the tumbled down ruins of a hamlet high in the hills above Pieve. Fiore had the dream of creating a place where artists could come and feed off its soul energy and find inspiration. We found it and lost a piece of our hearts. The place , the people, the view , the food, the love , all imbue Peralta with a power that once felt can never be forgotten. When i think of Italy, I think of Tuscany and Peralta, and for us forever, all roads lead to Peralta! We are counting the days until we return , amore!

Magic place !

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 15 people and booked Peralta to celebrate our 50s anniversairy.

We had a wonderful week there and are still under the charm of Tuscany and this lovely place.

Bravo again to Dinah to keep Peralta and Fiora's souvenir alive and thanks a lot Kate for your kindness.

Hope come back again.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, Shahin and Jhon, for your review. It is always lovely to hear such positive feedback from guests who have stayed with us, and it is so encouraging to know that the very special atmosphere of Peralta, created by Fiore, is so much appreciated. I think it is partly due to her sculpture that is everywhere and partly due to the very charming and unusual way she restored the hamlet. It is also a wonderful location for a large group such as your's to be able to enjoy each other's company and yet all have their own accommodation and privacy throughout the hamlet. We enjoyed your visit very much ...... Come back again with an even larger group!! Dinah

My Great Escape

  • 5 of 5

I have just come back home from an amazing place nestled in the hills of Tuscany, Italy, called Peralta. What a wonderful get away - tranquil beauty, peace and quiet. I traveled solo for three weeks in March and didn't really know how everything would go. From the very first day it was SO much more than I expected. The beauty, the service, the people. Kate, the care taker of the Villa, went out of her way to make sure I was well taken care of and really enjoyed her place in the villa. Thank you so much Kate for everything!

Peralta is a villa (almost Castle) overlooking the hills and valleys and small local town Camaiore (their Pasticceria Rossano's pastries are the best!) There's a big olive garden and lots of trees, like orange, lemon and bay. Lots of wild and planted flowers around the property. Many paths to take to enjoy the nature around. A lot of thought and work was put into this real old world villa to make it beautifully unique. The apartment I stayed at had a large kitchen and a huge fireplace. It was very clean and cozy, I felt I was living a fairytale, it was so magical and comfy. :) A few very friendly cats Pino and Bisco were looking for company and became my roommates after a while. :)

People in the area are so nice and helpful also. Though I spoke very little Italian I felt comfortable to talk to anyone I had encountered: local grocery store owners (their fresh bread, cheese and Prosciutto are amazing!), neighbors, people at the local gas station. Christopher, the gardener of Peralta, was always greeting me with a smile and eager to help with whatever I needed, just ask. Thank you Christopher!

Peralta is very close to so many other beautiful places. I had lots of day trips to places like Lucca, Piza, Cinque Terra, Siena and Florence.

Out of all the places I visited during my trip, I always couldn't wait to come back "home", in my quiet place, in touch with nature. I'm so blessed I found Peralta, especially to have a chance to get to know its people. It was hard to leave. I know I'll be back. Very soon. And I'm sure many of my friends will be visiting as well.

We had a wonderful stay at Peralta this summer, the place is just stunning ! People are so nice and welcoming, our apartment was very nicely decorated with a wonderful view on the toscan hills. Our terrace was great for breakfast or peaceful drinks at night. It is a perfect Italian summer place where you want to come back every year !

Beautiful Hilltop House, Amazing Location!

  • 5 of 5

Having read the previous review of Pipistrelli I can honestly say I couldn't have had a more different experience of staying in this apartment. The house itself is a stunning example of Tuscan building, with a real homely feel. It is decorated beautifully and has a perfect little kitchen to make your morning coffee and a relaxing seating area to lounge the afternoons away after a busy time exploring Luca and the surrounding areas. Everything was spotlessly clean and I found the bed to be very comfortable, I slept so well for my entire stay. Peralta as a whole is a beautiful place, and more than just because of the buildings, the artwork dotted around the land, the very helpful and friendly staff and the animals (of which I only counted 1 dog Ellie who was very friendly and without any fleas as far as I could see!), it has an incredibly special feeling about it which stays with you long after you leave. I can only imagine the previous review was from people who didn't quite understand the magic of Peralta as I certainly would recommend (and have already done just that) this apartment to friends and family, and I can't wait to go back and visit Dinah, Kate, and the team (plus Ellie the dog) again.

Beautiful location, apartment in poor condition

  • 1 of 5

On the positive side, this location is beautiful and the swimming pool area is lovely.

The same cannot be said of the apartment. The bathroom has mould and the smell permeates throughout the apartment in a horrible fashion. The apartment is also filthy with cobwebs on the walls and across the ceilings and dirt on the living room floor. The bed had broken slats which were left under the bed and the sheets and towels were old and threadbare. Several things were broken in the apartment including the backdoor so it is impossible to lock.

The other thing that was a particular problem for us is the large number of animals on the property (5 dogs, 3 cats on our visit) which roam through your apartment if you don't shut the doors. They all have fleas and more importantly, you are not told this in advantage, which is a problem if you have an allergy.

All in all would not recommend this apartment.

Owner's Response: As the owner of Peralta I was amazed and disappointed to read this review and feel it warrants a response. We have two girls who have been cleaning Peralta's accommodation for many years. They are very efficient and leave all accommodation spotless for the next guests, so I am surprised to read about cobwebs and dirt on the floor. Our various properties have authentic Tuscan tiles on the floors which sometimes have the patina of time but are never dirty. The bathroom was renovated a couple of years ago and is very new in every aspect. We pride ourselves on our pure Egyptian cotton bedlinen, laundered professionally, and we certainly do not give our guests threadbare towels. Our beds are all very comfortable and I am surprised to read that there were lats lying under the bed. However, it is true that the lock on the back door was broken for a very short time but quickly repaired. I am sorry that these guests must have stayed in this brief period when we were awaiting the locksmith. As for the animals, it is also true that we have 3 cats and 1 dog (my terrier Ellie) resident at Peralta. They are all very popular with our guests who often invite them into their accommodation. Due to this, the animals have a tendency to think everyone is very happy to see them! Following this review, I will mention on our website that we do have 3 cats and a dog so people who do not appreciate animals will be forewarned. However, they certainly do not have fleas since we treat them each month with the classic anti flea treatment on the neck. Nor do we have 5 dogs, just Ellie. Perhaps we had other guests who were staying with a dog, or a neighbour's dog strayed, although I do not remember ever seeing 5 dogs at one time. I am very sorry that the guests who have written this review had such a negative experience at Peralta. It is not pleasant for us to read such criticism and of course we would like all our guests to enjoy the experience of staying in the unique and beautiful hamlet of Peralta! Dinah

Great place to relax and the perfect place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We had our 8 days holiday in Peralta at the end of The August. We had read great reviews about Peralta and everything was just like we had heard. Peralta was most beautiful and peaceful and the view from the hill was breathtaking. During our stay we hiked at hills to the nearest Hamlets and we climbed to the top of the Prana. We also visited at Lucca, Pisa and The Cingue Terre. But the best part of the day was relaxing afternoon at the Peralta`s pool with glass of prosecco and some tapas after hike or day trip. We enjoyed Laura´s delicious meals twice and rest of the evenings we had lovely dinners at the local restaurants. You can easily find them from the info book at the apartment or ask Kate. Self-servise bar at main house worked fine and it was nice to see other guests at the main terrace. Peralta´s Staff Kate, Steven and Laura was always very helpful and kind... and the Ellie (dog) was great company with her ball. We have travelled around the world and seen lot of places. Peralta ... we will be back .. next time with our frieds. Thank You for all the kindness.
