Experience the incredible beauty of the north shore at the Teak Room in Haena, Kauai, located in the heart of the most beautiful 10 miles of the island. We are close to Tunnels Beach, and set between two of the top five rated beaches on the islands. Kepuhi beach is 50 yards down the driveway; directly behind is lush jungle hillside, the border to 1000's of acres of private nature conservancy land. All tucked into a quiet, secluded, tree lined cul-de-sac.
Private, comfortable, and luxurious, the Teak Room interior features a hand carved four poster king-size bed, wood floors, and tropical décor, along with an equipped kitchenette and an extra large walk in closet. Outside are 2 lanais with a bbq, and an additional private hot shower, all in the style of old Hawaii. This downstairs unit has its own private entrance, garden views, and covered parking.
Relax to the soothing sound of rolling surf and just minutes away is Hanalei town with restaurants, dancing and entertainment. You can walk by beach the entire final two miles to Ke’e, where the road ends and the famous Napali coast begins. Or you can walk the beach just 300 yards to the Hanalei Colony Resort, for the only (award winning) restaurant and coffee house on this part of the island. Or just take our beach chairs and walk the 120 steps to the beach out front!
About the owners Doug, Bev, Miranda, and Katie Howland: Doug and Bev were first drawn to Kauai in the early 80’s, after many visits they finally decided to buy this wonderful property in 2006. Doug, a 35-year designer/builder, has spent the last 10 years personalizing the house. Bev, a jack-of-all-trades, has owned a health food store, opened a charter elementary school, run a motel, and managed their various properties over the years. Their youngest daughter Katie lives in Portland with her older sister Miranda. After a career in the arts, she now manages the family’s properties. Doug and Beverly now migrate between their properties in Arizona, Utah, and Hawaii. They like to hike, horseback ride, ski, practice yoga, whitewater raft, dance, and travel in their free time.
They also have vacation rentals in the Escalante Canyons of Southern Utah and in the town of Sedona in Northern Arizona.

Doug and Bev were always drawn to the North Shore, when making the decision to put down roots, they couldn’t resist the best part of the island. They fell in love with the unique beauty of their home that balances both accessibility and seclusion.
There are many amazing natural wonders right out the front door (see above). This home offers the lush mountainous jungle of Kauai out the back door and the soothing beach and ocean out the front door.
Although we have been married 42 years; this was like a second honeymoon. The accommodations were amazing and so were the surplus of towels. The grandeur of this spot in Kauai, is stupendous. We so enjoyed meeting such gracious folks.
My husband and I lost our mothers this last year. We had decided we wanted to go on a healing trip, booked and paid for our rental. 5 days before we were leaving the owner canceled our reservation leaving us with nowhere to stay on Kauai. We were quite disappointed, but tried one more time to find some place else to stay. The Kauai God's were on our side and we found the Teak Room. The owner made things happen quick and easy for us, was very helpful, and we rested assured that we would have a place to start the healing process.
Both of us had never been to Hawai'i before, and chose Kaua'i for the peaceful nature of the island. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived, the studio rental was spacious, with delightful traditional furniture. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to make our meals. The bed was comfortable and large, with many pillows, which is something I love. There were plenty of towels, blankets, and sheets, umbrellas, and all the water toys and beach chairs you could possible need- even a kayak and surf board!
The landscaping and garden where phenomenal! The beach was down the driveway and across the street! My favorite was the outside shower- every day when we got home I took a shower before entering the Teak Room- truly a gift to shower outside in the jungle feel of paradise!
I loved the quiet and seclusion of the area. Needless to say, we were able to relax, and enjoy. I cannot say enough about our stay at the Teak Room. I highly recommend this wonderful rental. We are already planning our trip for next year and will stay here again.
The Teak Room was the perfect choice for our stay in what we consider the most tropical, lush part of the Island. The room itself is spacious, cozy, clean and well appointed with everything you need. Tastefully decorated with traditional Hawaiian furniture, bedding and wall art. Wonderful jacuzzi tub and outdoor shower! There's a small but fully equipped kitchen to make a meal as well as a bbq. A private front porch in a tropical setting to have your morning coffee. Surrounded by lush vegetation and right across the street from a beautiful secluded beach! This is truly a gem!!
The teak room was exactly what we were looking for. Very clean, super comfortable bed, big whirlpool tub, great location. The kitchen was small, but well organized and had everything need to make a great meal. The outdoor shower is a great option for coming home full of sand from the beach and not tracking it throughout the house.
We used the surf board and beach umbrellas a lot. It was great to have access to so much outdoor toys at the house.
The road was quiet and there was very little noise from the unit above. Highly recommended this property. We would stay here again.
This studio had everything we needed in a tidy, spacious, private location. We were in Kauai for a wedding, most of our friends rented larger 4 bedrooms homes. We feel so lucky to have had this lovely place to ourselves. Kitchenette ideal for breakfast and simple meals for two people. Everything was sparkling clean and very well kept. Nice small touches such as a cooler and beach chairs for the beach right across the street. Could not ask for anything more. We would highly recommend this property.
We recently returned from Hawaii where we stayed for one week at The Teak Room. We picked this place because of it's location; about fifty yards from a small usually deserted beach at the end of the driveway and only a few minutes walk from the more famous Tunnels Beach. It is situated about half way between Hanalei and the end of the highway where the Kalalau Trail begins. Unfortunately the weather did not oblige during our stay; the week we spend there (mid February 2014) was unusually wet even by Kauai standards with almost non-stop rain. We therefore spend more time in the Teak Room than we had anticipated and came to appreciate all that this cozy suite had to offer. It is bigger than the pictures would suggest. The four poster bed is unique, the hand carved frame is a piece of art and the bed is extremely comfortable to sleep in. The walk-in closet is a room in itself and accommodated our empty suitcases, back packs, laundry, beachwear and other junk that would normally be spread around a hotel room floor. The indoor jacuzzi and outdoor hot shower were much used and appreciated. The kitchen is a bit small but is well equipped and certainly adequate for two people. We prepared breakfast and lunch only preferring to eat out in the evenings as we wanted to sample some of the many restaurants in Hanalei and Princeville. Having a washing machine and dryer available on site made our stay very comfortable. Everything in the Teak Room including bed linen, towels, kitchen and bathroom was spotlessly clean. Our gracious hosts Doug and Beverly who were staying upstairs during the week were there were most friendly and helpful. Before arriving I had some concerns that a downstairs suite might be noisy because of the sound of footsteps overhead. This proved not to be the case; the only sound we heard was that of the rain beating down outside! The roosters were even surprisingly quiet and choose not to crow in the mornings if it was raining. Because of the weather we did not get to do the things we had come to do including snorkeling on Tunnels Beach, hiking the Kalalau Trail and seeing the Na Pali sunsets. On leaving we agreed we would have to come back to Kauai again to do these things; maybe at a different time of the year. When we do come we will check on the availability of the Teak Room; it is really the perfect place to stay for a couple of any age who want to explore Kauai's North Shore.
We visited the Teak Room earlier this month and enjoyed every moment.
Only a few minutes from Tunnels Beach by auto and Tunnels beach was beautiful sandy beach with mild surfs the two days we visited. Also the "wet" and "dry" caves a just a few more minutes down the road.
About a 15 minute drive will get you to Princeville and their golf course (visit The Tavern, excellent food and not overly expensive).
This home was located in a peaceful quiet area, was extremely clean and organized, well equipped with kayaks (which we did not partake in the use of due to lack of time), and was just perfect.
Kudos to Patricia! She had the place absolutely spotless and is one of the friendliest people you could ever meet. She gave us suggestions on where to eat and some of what the island had for scenic viewing. Also her driving instructions were spot on!
The property was well maintained as were all the appliances and linens. Not a negative thing to say about this wonderful getaway rental.
