Description

Photos and Description of this 8 bedroom holiday home in Portalegre - Tapada do Falcao

8 bedroom, 5 bathroom, sleeps a maximum of 16.

Tapada do Falcao stands in 130 acres of wood and pastureland in the Alto Alentejo, a truly unspoilt corner of Portugal. Cork oaks, eucalyptus and pine trees surround the house and contribute a wonderful fragrance. The Sao Mamede Natural Park, a protected area noted for its beauty and nature, is on the doorstep and the Spanish border is a stone's throw from the door. This is an exceptional corner of undiscovered Portugal - full of character, barely touched by tourism and steeped in history.

The house enjoys not one but two exclusive outdoor pools, a tennis court, full size trampoline, and wonderful gardens with numerous terraces for outdoor eating. It offers spacious accommodation and is ideal for 2 or 3 families to share, although a smaller group looking for the luxury of extensive space will not feel lost.

Away from the house the end of a long expanse of lawn is the large pool, surrounded by grass and tiled areas for sun lounging, shaded by palm trees and umbrellas, and with a wonderful view across the valley to the hills and medieval village of Alegrete beyond. No need to stray far, as there is a shower/WC and a fridge in the adjacent poolhouse! For the more energetic a hard tennis court and trampoline are at hand, and bicyles can be hired from the caretaker.

Around the house are more shady terraces, perfect for al fresco lunches or just sitting and reading in peace on the wicker furniture under the shaded portico. And just when you think you have seen it all, go through a gate in the high stone wall next to the kitchen and discover the magical 'secret' garden containing the original pool, lemon and other citrus trees and another outside eating space. This area is well lit at night and perfect for evening meals and barbecues and even a midnight swim!

Inside the house are eight bedrooms in total: six upstairs (two ensuite with balconies overlooking the gardens) and a further two downstairs. These are complimented by a large sitting room with an extensive library of English books, satellite TV, a music system and even a grand piano (though we cannot guarantee the tuning!). There is a large dining hall and well equipped kitchen with everything you would expect to find: large gas cooker, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and large American-style fridge-freezer with ice maker.

Away from the house but still part of the estate is a our vineyard, planted in 2000 and covering some 6.2 hectares on the north-facing slope of a hill. We planted five varieties of grapes which are sent away to be made into delicious red wine by our local Australian winemaker. You will find a bottle waiting for you in the kitchen on arrival, and more can be purchased!

We defy you not to fall in love with this house and its beautiful surroundings. We have successfully let to single families, two or three families wanting to share a holiday, and to groups of friends or family wanting to celebrate a special occasion such as a 40th birthday party or wedding anniversary. More accommodation can be sourced locally should you so require.

The property is officially registered with the Portuguese tourism authorities (registration number 306/AL) which ensures that it complies with safety and fire regulations.

About Rosy Atkinson

We are Nigel and Rosy Atkinson and we have owned this wonderful property since 1997. We live in London most of the year but enjoy spending as much time here as possible. It provides the complete antidote to our frenetic London life. As soon as we emerge from the car and hear the crickets and smell the pine and eucalyptus, we start to unwind. We have had many wonderful times here with friends and family, relaxing around the big pool by day and gathering round the small pool or on the terrace in the evening for a convivial barbecue or chicken from the local restaurant, all washed down with our own wine. What could be better!

Rosy Atkinson purchased this house in 1997

Why Rosy Atkinson chose Portalegre region

Nigel had a dream to own a house with a vineyard and to make great quality wine. We had looked at properties in Spain and were on the verge of buying something when we saw this property advertised in a tiny space in the Sunday Times. Nigel spoke to the then-owners on the phone and arranged to come out to look at the place. He returned saying it was love at first sight and (rather sheepishly!) he had 'sort of agreed to buy it'. We quickly arranged a second visit and I too fell in love both with the property and with the area. We bought the place and the rest, as they say, is history!

What makes this house unique

The house really is very special. It is spacious and well appointed inside but it is the outside that really sold it to us. The large stone terrace that runs across the back of the house has spectacular views across the grounds to the hills of Spain beyond. There are many pine cork and eucalyptus trees and not another property to be seen. Away from the property you almost feel as if you are in a previous century - villages of whitewashed houses picked out with the traditional blue and yellow; bars with flat-capped men sitting outside contemplating life, and hardly any traffic. What is not to like?

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a superb extended family holiday at Tapada do Falcao. It satisfied all the needs, indeed the fantasies, of a party of 12, ranging from young children to grand-parents. The facilities are ideal, the estate is glorious and the location is a revelation – very attractive, interesting and unspoilt. Tapada do Falcao is well loved and well managed, which makes for a very welcoming and appealing holiday environment. Having spent several successful villa holidays together in Europe, this is the first one to which we would all love to return.

Fantastic property with everything you need

  • 5 of 5

We had another fantastic stay at Tapada do Falcao this year and thoroughly enjoyed the surroundings. This was our second visit as we came here last year and loved it so much we decided to come back the following year. It is such an amazing place to stay for us as it suits our requirements as an extended family - a spacious and well equipped house, a tennis court which we used constantly throughout our stay, even in the heat of the day, lovely swimming pools, an area where there are few tourists and very friendly locals. An extra bonus is that João, the caretaker, lives nearby and he is very friendly and really helpful.

Tapada do Falcao.

  • 5 of 5

Tapada do Falcao is an amazing property, it's very spacious and well.equipped. We enjoyed a week there with family, including our 1 year old grandson. We found it very relaxing being around the house, by the pool or walking in the grounds. We also explored the villages and castles nearby, visiting some interesting places.

Everything we needed could be bought locally.

We would love to make a return visit

A perfect place to stay

  • 5 of 5

A perfect place for us as we were able to swim and play tennis every day. In addition, the house was just perfect (although we spent most of the time outside) and compared to other large properties we have rented abroad in the past, it was extremely well equipped (especially the kitchen). The grounds were extensive and well cared for, the views were amazing and the weather fantastic. The two pools were a real bonus and the courtyard pool by the house was lovely to sit by in the evening for dinner. João, the caretaker, greeted us on our arrival. He was very friendly and gave us lots of helpful suggestions. We even bought some of the wine from the estate whilst there which we really liked. We were within walking distance of a restaurant in the village and supermarkets were under 10 mins away by car.

Wonderful stay in a beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in this beautifully maintained and atmospheric property that has stunning views over the surrounding countryside. The large swimming pool is perfectly appointed with plenty of sun loungers for day time relaxing and the smaller pool area provides an attractive evening dining area.In fact one is spoilt for choice for al fresco eating / drinking areas.Inside the house is decorated in traditional style ,kept immaculately clean and provides a cool respite from the hot midday sun in summer. The housekeeping couple live in a separate cottage on the estate and are always on hand to help with any issues. For the more energetic the tennis court is in very good condition and there is much too explore in the locality.Shops are only a couple of minutes away by car.

Perfect Family Retreat

  • 5 of 5

lovely, peaceful family house, utterly quiet and relaxing in an unspoiled part of Portugal. Tempting not go leave the property at all : two pools add to the pleasures and days just disappear. A rather plain local village nearby has a very accommodating restaurant which will deliver meals to the house or cope with a large group at short notice. We have visited the quinta several times and it is

idyllic.

Owner's Response: The local restaurant will do take-always but don't routinely deliver. However they regularly cater for weddings and have on several occasions provided an excellent feast for a special occasion including providing chairs, tables, linen, beer pumps and staff as well as excellent and very reasonably priced food!

How to live in style

  • 5 of 5

Very comfortable and very impressive house -stone built with shuttered windows for a cool interior -the walled pool adjoining the house is perfect for dining out at evening time-the extensive terrace best at lunchtime. The shaded table an excellent site for vino verde and alfresco lunch. The main pool with shade from palms and umbrellas a great spot to read and chat the fridge in the pool house a very convenient resource.

The views are lovely over a national park and french owned supermarkets in the town Portalegre 15 minutes away mean you lack for nothing.ion far enough from any shell suited horde-divine!

It is a peaceful and classic locat
