Casa Meceanu is an extraordinarily beautiful traditional house on our large 90-hectare natural estate. The good reception and the endorsement of our guests have motivated us to expand our estate to another little jewel.
The 300-year-old house was restored from the ground up in 2014, and adapted to its current needs. It stands out as a wonderful, harmonious ensemble of traditional Maramureș handiwork and high-class living. With its floor area of 140 sq.m, it offers plenty of space for a laid-back stay.
If you are looking for peace and quiet, you will find them here -- along with some inspiration as well. The surrounding natural landscape is extraordinarily beautiful. The pleasant ambience of the house creates a place where you can relax and have fun.
Casa Meceanu is an ideal point of departure for nature lovers and enthusiastic hikers who want to explore the pristine surroundings. Excursions to monasteries and historical wooden churches are ideal destinations, as well as the museums and markets in Sighethu and the surrounding villages.
The culturally authentic house has been built with plenty of style. The original furniture has been combined with antique pieces from France and Germany. Many original paintings from the Baia Mare School, such as Sandor Ziffer, David Jandi, Oszkar Nagy, and Geza Kandar. Contemporary Romanian paintings and hunting trophies complete the environment.
The ground floor has a living room, a kitchen, corridor, and guest bathroom. The upper floor has a lounge with a library, a spacious bedroom, a second partially-open bedroom, and a large bathroom. Casa Meceanu is furnished with solid oak flooring. Two traditional masonry stoves on the ground floor provide a very comfortable warmth. All rooms on the upper floor are warmed with electrical heating.
A housekeeper can provide support with any concerns. From the washing to shopping and even an evening barbecue, Carmen is there with advice and assistance.
The surrounding meadows and the entire countryside are cut yearly by hand. Because of this, rare and protected plants can be found, such as orchids, wild gladiolas, carnivorous plants, cottongrass, and many others. The fauna is also impressive, with bears, wolves, lynx, deer, roe, wild cats, otters, eagles, and a variety of other rare birds, such as hoopoes and orioles. An unbelievable diversity of butterfly and beetle species abounds in the area.
Hikes (with a guide if desired), carriage rides, hunting and riding are just some of the leisure activities that you can participate in here.
With Botiza Fond, our community foundation, we support ecological, social, and cultural projects in Botiza. We would be happy to let you know more.
We have wandered Romania for twenty years and have fulfilled one of our dreams here.
Lilli Steier purchased this chateau / country house in 2010
The house provides a living testament to the handiwork of Maramureș.
Our guests tell us that it is far, far more beautiful than pictures and words can describe.
We arrived after a long drive and after dark, but Lilli was there to meet us and take us to her stunningly beautiful home. Inside, she had a fire going in the stove and a bottle of palinka on the table. Outside, the panoply of stars competed with the absolute quiet of the Maramures evening. The lights from the monastery at the bottom of the hill shone in the distance. Lilli's home was spotlessly clean. Anyone reading this has already seen a photo of the exterior. I can only add that the picture does not do it justice. Lilli has done a marvelous job of restoring this home, and it seems no detail was left unconsidered. We were looking for quiet; we were looking for authentic. We got both. We also got a kitchen with more modern appliances than in our home in Boston, a washing machine (a godsend after two weeks on the road), and a warm, large, fully equipped bathroom outside of our bedroom. A second bathroom was located downstairs.
If I could make one recommendation to visitors, it would be to make sure to walk to the bottom of Lilli's gravel road, turn left, and keep walking up into the hills. You will pass hills, streams, and forests as well as open pasturage and a small sprinkling of homes. You will also pass the monastery, well worth visiting (especially the church, which we were able to have opened for us to see).
There were times when I had to check in at work, and the wi-fi connection was perfect. Better, though, was the fact that no other media cluttered this home. I may be in a minority, but a place without a television or phone is what I consider a nice place to vacation. The fact that Maramures was the background to this lovely home simply made a great experience a bit magical. I did not want to leave, and I will most certainly be recommending this home to friends, neighbors, and anyone else I can think of. It is an experience not to be missed.
Unbedingt weiter zu empfehlen!!!
Absolutely beautiful. Great location with lovely views of the hills, little wooden monastery and the Maramures mountains in the distance and so many stars. It was wonderful to sit on the front step of a morning, drinking coffee and soaking up the peace, the views and the occasional cries of the birds of prey as they circled around in the distance. Botiza itself is a lovely little working village with a good standard of housing and a friendly, but not intrusive, local population. The two 'big' shops in the village centre had everything we needed and the one nearest the bridge had nice coffee. Ok it was the usual plastic cup 'to go' but it tasted good to us so we'd stop off there for one anytime we ventured out. Found some nice walks and drives. The house itself is, well I have to say, wonderful. Well-appointed and stylish. Very comfy bed. The fact that there was no TV didn't bother us at all, we took a laptop and watched some DVDs on it, otherwise we read when not out and about or simply just taking in the atmosphere and, dare I say it again, the peace. The first week was chilly so we had to light the sobe in the kitchen and living room. We were a bit nervous about this at first but it was so easy to light and maintain that we quickly became happy 'slaves to the logs'. Great piece of kit, the Romainians aren't daft, keeps the heat all the next day as well so only had to light it of a night, toasty! We both loved this house and place and would happily return sometime. It felt like a home.

DANKE!
The estate, which contains the four holiday homes, is located in northwest Romania just above the village of Botiza the district (or judeţ, in Romanian) of Maramureș. Its altitude is some 700 m above sea level. The Hungarian border is situated 150 km away, while it is 30 km to Ukraine. Sighetu Marmației is the nearest city (about 38 km away). The nearest airports are in Baia Mare (also known by its German name, Frauenbach, and about 80 km away) or Cluj (German Klausenburg, 170 km). Nearby: Visit Rodna and the Maramureș National Park at a distance of 15 km as the crow flies.
The 90-hectare estate is a regional treasure with an unbelievable array of flora and fauna. This estate is unique in Maramureș. All of our visitors are impressed with its extraordinary location in front of the Schimbarea la Față monastery, which was named for the changing of the seasons from summer to autumn. A lovely view of the mountains of Ukraine and Rodna range in the distance evoke a feeling of vastness, wilderness, and peace.
