About the property

Garden Apartment - 3 Bedrooms - 2 Baths - (Sleeps 2-6)

Our Southbank garden apartment, in the new heart of London, is 100 yards from The Thames behind The OXO Tower between Waterloo Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge.

Our apartment is on the first and second floors of a small, modern block of 16 apartments. The first floor comprises of a living room and full kitchen. There are patio doors onto a beautiful, planted deck with a table and chairs for al fresco dining. There is also a double bedroom and shower room on this floor. There is also a a third bedroom with bunk beds suitable for two children or one adult.. On the second floor is an en suite master bedroom overlooking the garden deck. There is an elevator.

We are very close to the cultural heart of London including The National Theatre, Hayward Gallery, Royal Festival Hall, National Film Theatre, Tate Modern, Globe Theatre and The London Eye. There are lots of places nearby to eat and drink to cover all tastes and budgets.

Location: We are ten minutes from two tube stops (Waterloo and Blackfriars), which have 5 lines between them as well as British Rail services. For the most picturesque walk along The River, we use Embankment Station, which takes 15 to 20 minutes depending on how many photos you take!

Eating: We have plenty of places nearby to eat including two very good restaurants in The OXO Tower, which have great views. There are lots of less expensive restaurants within a short distance, many overlooking The River, and a couple of pubs on The River that serve food and drink throughout the day.It truly is the best location in London!

About David and Julia Batchelor-Walsh

David and Julia have always loved the culture of London's South Bank and when the opportunity arose to purchase an apartment they couldn't believe their luck.

They have an ten year old son, Sebastian.

Julia is a professional, classical singer having trained at The Royal College of Music. Since the birth of Sebastian she has been a full time Mum fitting in the occasional concert.

David is a full time Dad and says it's the best thing he has ever done!

David and Julia Batchelor-Walsh purchased this apartment in 2005

Why David and Julia Batchelor-Walsh chose Waterloo

The South Bank is the vibrant cultural centre of London. Our apartment is near Tate Modern, the world's most visited modern art gallery and a host of other attractions including The Globe Theatre, St Paul's Cathedral, The National Theatre, The National Film Theatre, Hayward Gallery, The Royal Festival Hall, London Eye etc etc.

We are within walking distance of theatreland and Covent Garden and there are lots and lots of places to eat and drink to suit all tastes and budgets.

Public transport is fabulous particularly the RV1 bus which stops outside our apartment block and runs, mainly along The River, from Tower Hill to Covent Garden via Waterloo. It is a very frequent service. Taxis are abundant.

What makes this apartment unique

Garden apartment in the middle of London close to many of London's major tourist and cultural attractions and a short walk from The Thames.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear David,

I would like to tell you that we 4 really enjoyed our holidays in London.

Your flat is great. Thank you for all the breakfast-things in the refrigiator.

Even the weather was fantastic !!! So we had a wonderful view from the London Eye.

If we decide to come back to London your flat will be the first choice for us!!!

Best wishes

Martina, Thomas, Radka and Ansuze

Perfection In London

  • 5 of 5

Perfect property to see and do all of London. First time visitor- with its front door bus service... which then connects to tubes and other buses, all on a London Tube pass (the cheapest way to get everywhere) ! You arrive to a quiet oasis and settle in with a few necessities for breakfast David provides ... when you have refreshed, you tackle the town ... sometimes returning HOME... to recharge !

It's like moving your home to London... COME ON OVER !

Beautiful sunny flat, prime South Bank location, quiet and peaceful at night

  • 5 of 5

Staying in David and Julia's lovely Southbank flat (with outdoor garden patio!) was the best decision we made this past trip to London. Before we even arrived, David took the time to answer my questions in detail. His assistance, even before we got there, smoothed out a big wrinkle (we had found out the airport transport to London was NOT going to be running on the exact days our family-- six people with luggage --were arriving and departing). Second, the flat had everything we needed to keep our family rested, happy and healthy after busy days on the tube, walking and sightseeing. It is in a brightly-lit, charming brick building with lots of character. It is just a short walk to both Blackfriars and Waterloo stations, meaning we could get almost anywhere, fast. Taxis, if you're in a hurry, are a minute away at a nearby hotel. David met us at the apt. so we got oriented and felt welcomed right away. We felt at home, with fresh milk, juice, bread and jam and cereal waiting for us, just what we and the children needed to pep up after the long flight. The flat is warm, bright and sunny, full of books, and although it's in a zippy area, with a pub on the corner, it is super quiet and peaceful at night. That, plus the cozy beds, made it easy to get a good night's sleep, taking the edge off our and the kids' jet lag. The kids loved the bunk beds and living room area. I loved the fact I could go out and walk and see the river and St. Paul's first thing in the morning and at night, and it was like 3 minutes to the British Film Institute IMAX (took my ten year old to see Black Panther! Long live Wakanda!). David and Julia make the flat very easy to use for visitors and it had everything we needed (super-quiet washer/dryer, pots/pans/good knives/spices/cutting boards/etc. for a quick breakfast) so we saved plenty of time and money by staying there, compared to other flats and hotels I've stayed at in the past in London. It also feels very "lived-in," like you are staying at a home (which you are!). I've stayed in some utilitarian apartments that exist solely to house occasional visitors, but Julia and David's apt. feels happy and homey. Throughout our 8 day visit, David always answered our questions by text, email or phone right away. I'm so glad I found this flat and chose to stay there.

Perfect flat for families in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five recently stayed here for a brief trip to London. The flat is carefully kept with an excellent library (including many travel books to London and elsewhere), a great shower, a beautiful quiet courtyard and a very user friendly kitchen. The flat is very quiet - no street noise or neighbors at all. And we had plenty of space for ourselves and our three teenage boys.

Mr Walsh (no relation) greeted us warmly and provided everything we might need for our visit.

The location on the South Bank is very convenient for walks along the Thames or popping over to Covent Garden for a show. There are several convenient markets nearby as well as reasonably priced restaurants.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the review Brian. It was lovely to have a 'Walsh" stay. Maybe you will eventually find a relation we have in common when your family tree is further advanced! Hope we see you and Autumn and your boys again. Best, David

perfect location

  • 4 of 5

This flat is in a perfect, quiet location just a stone throw away from the Southbank walkway and within walking distance to various attractions. It has 3 bedrooms of which the biggest one is upstairs with the second bathroom. The kitchen/lounge/dining area is pretty small and a little tired but was functional for the 4 of us. I am sure it would feel much bigger in summer when one can use the patio, which looked lovely even in the rain.

David and Julia are lovely and very helpful people. They even had some basics waiting in the fridge for us when we arrived, which was greatly appreciated. We would definitely stay again.

Owner's Response: Hi Kerstin, Thank you for the review. We refurbish the flat in Januarys when our bookings are a little less frequent. Starting Monday, we are having a new work top in the kitchen and new flooring, a new fridge/freezer and washing machine, a new microwave, kettle and toaster. In the lounge a new settee, three new chairs, a new coffee table and rug.. We are also redecorating parts of the apartment. It would be lovely to have you stay again to see the improvements. Best wishes, David and Julia

The property was comfortable and many things were provided but it would have been too small for 5.

  • 4 of 5

We found the property to be very centrally located with transport links and convenience stores all within walking distance.
