Excellent for Get-Away Weekend
The house is extraordinarily comfortable and well-equipped. The setting is gorgeous, with well-kept yard and spectacular views to the East and West along the access road. We hope to return someday.
Beautiful grounds, not another house or person in sight! House was well-maintained and clean. Enjoyed hearing the cows moo and found the house to be perfect for our getaway. Would definitely come back!
Rose Hill Review
Wonderful stay at Rose Hill! We will definitely visit again.
Lovely Bucolic Setting
Rose Hill is a lovely home set on a 360 acre farm. The drive from the main road to the home is approx. 1 mile on a gravel surface.
It is not for low-lying cars as there are several dips and ruts along the way. Also along the way are beautiful vistas of rolling hills and the mountains in the distance. At the end of the road is the home and a large parking area. Cows and their nursing calves were visible from most areas of the home.
While there are only two bedrooms (both upstairs--one with a queen-size bed and one with two full-size beds) and two bathrooms (one on the main floor and one upstairs), the house is large with several rooms to congregate, a large updated and well-appointed kitchen, lovely sunroom and basement with washer and dryer. The owners have also provided a gas grill and outdoor seating.
We were in Lexington for our oldest son's graduation from VMI. While the owners do not allow large parties, they were amenable to our hosting several cadets and their families for dinner. It was nice to have a place where everyone could relax and not feel cramped. The home is about 4 miles from Lexington and about 15-20 minutes to the campus, partially due to the gravel road.
We loved the home and our stay there. I feel I would be remiss, though, if I did not mention one thing. The highway can be seen off in the distance. At night when the farm is asleep, you can hear the trucks traveling along the highway. If you are a light sleeper, this may disturb you. We, however, would stay here again without hesitation.
Exceptional Historic Property
Rose Hill was the most beautiful and charming rental! The attention to detail was second to none. It was well appointed, clean and suited our needs perfectly. The hostess was easy to communicate with and clear about expectations. We loved the pastoral setting. We would love to return in the future.
We stayed here for three days and it was absolutely perfect. The home is beautiful, spacious and comfortable. We really appreciated the thoughtfulness that went into equipping the house. Anything we could think of that we might want was right there, including an abundance of information about the area. The setting is gorgeous, and the location is excellent. It is a short, easy trip to downtown Lexington, Natural Bridge and the Horse Center. We hiked on beautiful trails, visited Natural Bridge State Park (Wonderful!) and saw the historic sites in Lexington. We also took the carriage tour of Lexington, which is not to be missed. We so enjoyed our visit to the area, and we are grateful that we could stay in this lovely home. I wish we could have stayed longer. We recommend it very highly.
Rose Hill is 6 minutes from Lexington, VA,listed as one of the 20 best small towns to visit in 2013 by Smithsonian Magazine. This area of the Shenandoah Valley is beautifully tucked in between the Blue Ridge & Allegheny Mountains, both of which you can see from Rose Hill.
Lexington is an historic Valley Town. It is home to Washington & Lee University (W&L) and Virginia Military Institute (VMI), both Historic National Landmarks. W&L was founded in 1749. George Washington helped to endow it. After The Civil War, Gen. Robert E. Lee became W&L's President until 1870. He lies in a crypt in the beautiful Victorian Lee Chapel. There is an excellent tour of the Lee Chapel on the college campus as well as a superb small museum at the lower level of the Chapel.Walk among the historic W&L colonnade and you will feel you have returned to the 1800's. VMI, known as the West Point of the South, is right next door to W&L. Be sure to go to the Chapel where a huge painting of the battle of New Market hangs. The VMI cadets fought with valor in that Civil War battle. There is a very good Museum at VMI with lots of history of General Stonewall Jackson of the Civil War, who was a teacher at VMI before the war. Other famous VMI graduates such as General Patton, General George C. Marshall and many others are showcased in the museum. Also on VMI grounds is the George C Marshall Foundation and an excellent museum about him and the WWII area. If you are lucky you can watch the Cadets march in full dress on the Parade Grounds. Quite a stirring experience.
Both Colleges offer many public events, speakers, exhibits and other cultural and educational outings. Most are free and open to the public. You may find many noted public figures such as Hillary Clinton or George Romney speaking at local colleges. ( They did) as well as noted authors, artists, editors, etc. It is a great addition to life in the Lexington area.
The City of Lexington has also many historically preserved architectural buildings on it's photogenic Main Street. There are many old restored Churches , the Courthouse Square and Lawyers Row and Inns. Great shopping as you stroll down the brick sidewalks with unique local shops. No chain stores here! Great book stores. The Wall St Journal awarded Best Chocolate Store, Cocoa Mill, also took honors as the best chocolate in VA.
There are Great and varied restaurants such as the Red Hen which serves fresh gourmet food from the local area. The arts are alive with many great galleries such as Studio 11 which offers art shows as well as art instruction. Carriage rides, walking tours, ghost tours and other historical places such as the Stonewall Jackson House offer lots of American history. A great town to shop, eat and walk through history.
Just north of Lexington is the VA State Horse Center. Well worth a visit to see some of the best equestrian events in the mid-Atlantic States. Most Horse events are free. Amazing facility with outdoor and indoor Show arenas. Also out of town are several wineries such as Rockbridge Vineyard where you can enjoy their tasting room. There are also several local Breweries, such as Blue Lab and Devils Backbone, worth a visit.
They say you can hear live Bluegrass music every night on somebody's porch. Definitely you are in Bluegrass country.Just check the newspaper for where local groups are performing.
Very close to Rose Hill Home is the Virginia Safari Park a great place to drive through with your children and feed over hundreds of free roaming animals. Continue on driving to Natural Bridge, one of the natural wonders of the world. Also take in the Natural Bridge Caverns into the East's deepest cavern. You can continue on down Rt 11 to Buchanan and take a canoe or kayak ride down the James River with local outfitters.
Other great outdoor recreational adventures are hiking the nearby Mountains. We have a hiking book at Rose Hill for your information. There is also stream and lake fishing in the area as well as tubing down some of the smaller rivers or creeks.
Some more unique local attractions are Hull's Drive In north of Lexington. Great old fashion drive- in operated by a non-profit group. Also for the dirt track car racing there is Natural Bridge speedway where you can see some fun car racing.
To the East of Lexington is the small town of Buena Vista. There is a large golf course and public park, Glen Maury Park (often hosting Bluegrass musicians). It is home to Southern Virginian University. It is also the gateway to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a beautiful scenic drive along the tops of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The area is enriched with many historical, cultural and recreational opportunities - too many to see and enjoy in a one time trip. So we hope to see you over the years at Rose Hill exploring the many fun and unique qualities of this special region.
