About Christa Cranston

After quitting our own business (Mark) and corporate job (me) and then selling our home with everything in it, we travelled the US in our motorhome for what came to be 6 wonderful years! We drove our motorhome to Joshua Tree in 2004 to visit friends and never left. It is a beautiful place!

Christa Cranston purchased this house in 2005

Why Christa Cranston chose California Desert

It's seclusion but close proximity to town makes this a lovely location. We love that it sits on a dead end street, never having to see or hear through traffic. Your neighbors are the rocks and mountains this home sits up against. Peace and quiet..

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for letting us experience your house. You have excellent taste in everything from fence design to dishes. We felt right at home. It was so great to sit on the patio in the morning and evenings. We loved cooking in the kitchen with every gadget we could need. This house really has everything to make a perfect weekend where all you need is a trip to the grocery store and some good sneakers. We loved hiking in the park and coming home to our Joshua Tree house away from home. We loved it!

Amazing Property!

  • 5 of 5

Me, my husband and another couple opted for El Coyote for Thanksgiving week and we are sure glad that we did. What a spectacular property.

To begin, I have three main things I look for in a rental: cleanliness, comfort and convenience. Each of these were met beyond our expectations. The home and property was very clean and inviting upon arrival. It was also easy to keep clean. The kitchen is well stocked with condiments, pots, pans, dishes and a few odds and in's that made things even more convenient (popcorn popper, blender, and food processor). The beds are very comfortable and the linens are of top quality.

The home is very well laid out allowing for guests to keep to themselves if they wish, or to have intimate conversation. There are several sitting areas to pick from, both inside and outside (although we did wish for more outdoor lighting in the night hours for sitting on the back porch). There are plenty of comfortable seats for four adults to really sprawl out and relax.

The convenience of the property is beyond compare. It is less than a 10 minute drive to the West Joshua Tree park gate, and within minutes to any of the shops, markets or restaurants that you may want to try. There is a great hiking trail on the property, if you want to take a day off from the crowds of the park, and just walking around the "neighborhood" still felt very off the beaten path.

I primarily spoke to Christa and she was very easy to communicate with, and provided quick responses when needed. We had a marvelous time!

Lovely, quiet, comfortable

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful property on the edge of the wilderness, comfortable living room and bedrooms, spacious kitchen and nice outdoor seating areas. Just far enough from town to feel out of the rush yet close enough for shopping and going out for a bite. The owners were very helpful and the house was as advertised. The local Indian restaurant is quite good (Sam's). Convenient to the west entrance to the national park. The only critique - a very minor one - is that the nonstick pans need to be replaced. Otherwise, the kitchen was well-equipped. Thanks again for a beautiful stay. I'd come back in a heartbeat.

Christa and Mark were the perfect hosts for this property. They were great to deal with in all respects and wouldn't hesitate to rent from them again. Thank you Christa and Mark for a wonderful experience.

Desert Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Before I launch into specific details, I want to simply say THANK YOU to the Cranston's for providing us the desert retreat that has become one of our our most wonderful home bases. It also made for the most wonderful Thanksgiving setting.

This property is amazing. When looking for a vacation hot spot, my top three requirements are clean, convenient and comfortable. All of these were met beyond my expectations.

The home is very clean, and well stocked. The gas powered stove was a real blessing for preparing our Thanksgiving meal. The layout was extremely comfortable for four adults - and could have accompanied another couple easily. In addition to each couple having a private room and queen sized bed, there were plenty of places to find a relaxing bout of solitude. The home is also very conveniently located near the West park entrance, and being rock climbers and visiting the park daily, this was a real bonus. The property is also very near the amenities of both towns, Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley - while still feeling as though you were out of civilization by many miles.

The property has some wonderful activities right in the backyard, boulders for those who want to do some scrambling but don't want to venture into the park, a nice hiking trail up to the top of a large hill that looks down into the valley, and several seating areas with very differing views to put your mind at rest. I am an early riser, so I was able to enjoy the morning nature show watching desert hare, hummingbirds, roadrunners, and ravens while having my coffee. I was also treated to a quick, but rare, appearance of a small bobcat while sitting on the front porch one morning.

Overall, the only suggestion I can leave for possible improvement would be a few more lights on the back sitting porch. Maybe another string or two of Christmas lights would really create a more welcoming night sitting area. It was quite dark and we really wanted to enjoy more outdoor time during the evening hours.

I highly (highly) recommend this place for couples traveling together, or for families. This place will go down as one of the better places we have stayed.

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the house. It was very clean and was stocked with everything we needed. And it's in a really special location. Our three kids loved climbing on all the rocks behind the house and on the jungle gym at the house (if you have no kids...not to worry, the jungle gym is not an eyesore).

There is also a separate studio which is really nice for a third couple. There is a lot of nice outdoor space to have a meal, hang out etc...

Christa was incredibly quick to respond to all our questions.

It's really a perfect little house to rent.

Absolute fantastic property and location amid the Joshua Tree environment!!

  • 5 of 5

Excellent experience.....

I booked a week prior to our stay for just two of us; few days later I added two of our friends who wanted to come, and Christa gave me prompt replies to my questions and seamlessly added our guests to our reservation without hassle.

The property is private with a great cozy layout, and all the amenities. Great details throughout such as the hammock, hot tub, grill, claw bath tub, and wifi! I was pleasantly surprised the house sat on a bluff overlooking the valley below and the Joshua Tree horizon.

The only thing I would mention is we could not find a light over the outdoor grill, for evening cooking; but we may have just missed it, if it was there...

I have already sent details to a few friends about renting this great place in the future...

Oh, did I mention the crystal clear starry nights!!!!!!!

Best
