It's healthy to climb ...

... it’s also rewarded; because freedom lives on the mountains; An old saying goes like hiking as the most beautiful and most tolerable form of landscape encounter.

Saxon Switzerland is an ideal area for mountain hikes, which, in contrast to the high mountains on paved trails, via safe climbing facilities and without an impending change in weather, reward the delicious summit victory with a panoramic view, often stretched in a wide arc.

In contrast to the mountain climber, who traditionally climbs only the free-standing rock towers, the hiker reaches the same altitude, but can use his strength to start a route from the valley or the tour from the parking lot or the bus stop at the mountain shoulder. Especially the national park area offers, if you follow the simple rules of behavior, unimagined opportunities to encounter nature ....

Do you like family comfort, surrounded by a unique landscape in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains?
Then you have made the right choice with us!

City of Königstein with fortress Königstein

The Königstein Fortress rises 361 meters above the Elbe. If you stand at the foot of the Königstein Fortress, you can already imagine the impregnability of this fortress.
In order to make the mountain habitable at all, in the second half of the 16th Century, a 152.47 meter deep well was dug on the Königstein and in 1586 the first waterlift was installed, the large pedal wheel of which was set in motion by soldiers and front workers until 1871. The fountain is in a fountain house built by Jean de Bodt in 1735.

Over 750 years of history have made the Königstein Fortress an impressive monument, which you should plan to visit for several hours. In addition to underground casemate complexes, there are approx. 30 structures on the 9.5 hectare rock plateau. a. the gatehouse, the well house two arsenals, the garrison church, the treasure house and the horse stable.

A stroll through the military history open-air museum has something to offer for young and old: you can see exhibitions in the individual buildings, relax in the fortress forest, enjoy the 1.7 km long tour with the fascinating view of the Elbe valley and Saxon Switzerland or fortify yourself in the officers' casino or in one of the beer gardens. Guided tours and events are also offered.

City of Koenigstein

Koenigstein Fortress

Königstein was first mentioned in a document from 1379. The town and the surrounding country formed the border area between the diocese of Meißen and the Kingdom of Bohemia. Bohemia ruled there for a long time. The Elbe is still an important trade route today. The church is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The nearby Lilienstein is a popular hiking destination.

Hiking idyll - castles and palaces Kirnitzschtalbahn - Felsenbühne Rathen
Lilienstein

The most striking table mountain in Saxon Switzerland, located near Königstein and Waltersdorf, rises 300 m above the Elbe valley and offers fantastic views. Ascent over the 110 m high heap and a 70 m high step system to a strongly dissolved summit plateau, which is the remains of a castle complex from the 14th Century. Lilienstein is the checkpoint for the 'Eisenach-Budapest international mountain hiking trail'.

kuh1A gateway to nature, that's the cowshed! The striking rock massif lies in the middle of a densely closed forest area. Short ascent from the Lichtenhain waterfall on well-paved paths. The impressive layered cave (24 m long, 17 m wide and 11 m high!) , used as a stables by robber knights in the Middle Ages, is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Saxon Switzerland. The sky ladder, a narrow step system, leads through the shoulder-wide knight's gorge up to a spacious plateau. Here you can expect a fantastic view of the bizarre rocky backdrop of the Schramm- and Affensteine. Do not miss to get to know the cowshed from its gastronomic side - an inn offers welcome strengthening before the descent.
Pfaffenstein

Impressive: the very rugged Table Mountain near Königstein and Pfaffendorf. 349 m high, 600 m long, 300 m wide. His treasures: largest layered joint cave of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, Bronze Age ring wall, 43 m high rock needle in front of the southern tip - called Barbarine, goldsmith cave, about 30 climbing rocks. After the steep ascent through the bottleneck, you can enjoy a wonderful panorama. A snack and refreshing drinks are available on site!

bastion

The 'Bastei', a 194 m high rocky ridge that opens up the most famous view of Saxon Switzerland, rises above the Elbe, which winds its way through the spa town of Rathen. There are reasons for hiking and lingering: ascent and descent through narrow gorges, fascinating rocky landscapes, views far into the Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland. Stroll through the rock garden, over the 76 m long stone Bastei bridge to Neurathen castle. Return to the idyllic hotel and restaurant ensemble.
Amselgrund

Romantic ravine near Rathen, flowed through by the Grünbach, which falls as a blackbird over a 10 m high rock step and loses itself in the Amselsee (boat rental, circular route around the Amselsee, 6 m high dam). Climb up to the Bastei - through the Schwedenlöcher, over more than 700 steps.

Schrammsteine

These are peaks to storm! Vertically rising rock walls, falls into forested gorges - the rugged rock massif in the rear Saxon Switzerland is an excellent hiking and climbing area that will reward your efforts with fascinating views from the ridge path with views of the Elbe and Schrammstein. It stretches from the base of the Little Winterberg and the Affenstein to the Hohen Torstein.

Rear predatory castle (Winterstein)

Knight romance and adventure for nature lovers. The 40 m high Winterstein massif rises proudly and darkly from the surrounding forests. Via iron ladders you walk up to the oldest castle in the Saxon Switzerland region with remnants of the wall and rock chambers driven deep into the stone. Gripping view of foggy gorges and yawning chasms. Descent to the Zeughaus, one of the national park's traditional inns.

Kirnitzschklamm boat trip

Embedded in the most famous valley of Saxon Switzerland is a 700 m long reservoir near Hinterhermsdorf, which is bordered by steeply rising sandstone walls. It was originally created for the electoral Kirnitzschtalflößerei. Just let it float, past wonderful rock formations and rare vegetation. A delight in the landscape - quite the comfortable tour.

Zirkelstein, imperial crown

At Reinhardsdorf, two free-standing table mountains rise from the surrounding meadows and farmland - striking sandstone massifs, the distinctive appearance of which also attracts attention from afar. Climb up stairs and ladders to the top of the Zirkelstein. The viewpoint of the 42 m high rock gives you magical insights into the valley of the river Kamenice. Then climb the highly jagged imperial crown. Magnificent views of the surrounding rock world await you: Schrammsteine, Großer Winterberg - the highest mountain in Saxon Switzerland, Zschirnsteine and Bohemian Switzerland.

bielatal

Dreamy, sunny meadows, healthy mixed forest, softly babbling brooks, lined with lush ferns, mosses and grasses, and unusually delicate rock formations. Hiking and climbing is a pleasure here! An extensive network of trails opens up the area around the villages of Bielatal and Rosenthal to the Czech border. Bold rock towers such as the Hercules columns, the Abandoned Wall and the Leaning Tower offer sporting challenges of all levels of difficulty. If you take the time to watch in peace, you will see many acrobatic masterpieces.
