Since 1976 we are enthusiastic Bornholmers. A holiday trip to this beautiful island has enchanted us. Time and again we have travelled to Bornholm, and when in 1997 the opportunity arose to take over the old family pension Bølshavn, we didn’t take much time to think. We, that is:
Gertrude Richter-Reichhelm is a Danish lady (born in Aarhus), has been living in Berlin since 1965 and speaks of course both languages - Danish, and German - perfectly. When the three children were grown up, she has distinguished herself as a 'Doll Doctor' and ambitious collector of old German character dolls, and you will notice that today in the ambience of the house. Since 1997, she is the patron of the pension Bølshavn and makes a perfect hostess for a homely atmosphere in your holiday home.
Dr. Manfred Richter-Reichhelm, her husband, is a doctor, had as a urologist with a partner, a doctor’s office in Berlin and was active for many years in healthcare policy. Now retired, he has moved his centre of life to Bornholm during summer months. And carries out other popular work here: Hotel management, garden maintenance and on special occasions - cooking and baking.
Dr. Manfred and Gertrude Richter-Reichhelm purchased this house in 1997
We are not aware of a more beautiful location than the Aparthotel Bølshavn 9! This wonderfully located property was at the beginning of the last century, originally a farmhouse, built in the typical U-shape of the three buildings. It was later converted into a pension with many small rooms, and after acquisition, we first renovated each year floor by floor and made 5 rooms out of all 17 rooms : convenience and comfort and above all personal individual attention, that was and is our motto.
Later, the old barn additionally became a holiday home (Die alte Butik), and in 2005 a new building, 'Das kleine Haus'. The recent change was in 2012: either the three or two rooms in each of the two floors of the hotel are individually rented or floor wise as a holiday domicile, which has its own kitchen. The restaurant was closed and made as our manager’s apartment. Likewise our old apartment was free and was made as a holiday apartment 'Swallow's nest'.
And thus, from the original 'Pension Bølshavn ' emerged the present 'Aparthotel Bølshavn 9'.
What makes this holiday complex distinctive is the indescribably beautiful location with the gentle slope to the Baltic Sea, just opposite to Christiansø. The park-like garden, the old trees, especially our more than one hundred year old mulberry tree (our logo), the peace and the spacious expanse of the plot: that makes Bølshavn 9 as one of the most beautiful properties of Bornholm. Many of our guests sit with a book on a deck chair in the garden and enjoy the sun and peace. Here there is no hustle and bustle, here you can 'let your souls dangle'.
Our guests appreciate the beautiful location of the property amidst old orchards directly on the beach, no pathway and no road between the huge garden and the shore. Today, not only Copenhagen and other Danish people are our guests, but also Swedish, Norwegian, and indeed Swiss, Italian and Spaniard and of course lots and lots of Germans visit us, who want to enjoy the unparalleled serenity of Bornholm with the sun-drenched, almost Mediterranean climate.
Fig and mulberry trees thrive here and lizards scurry back and forth between the beach cliffs. Bølshavn like its neighbouring city Svaneke, is located on the sunny north-east side of the island. Svaneke - five kilometres away - is the 'solskinsby', the ' Sunshine City ' of Bornholm . And insiders call our little village of hundred souls Bølshavn 'Eldorado', 'Butter hole': That is the dip on top of rice porridge which has brown butter and sugar and cinnamon.
From our house you can reach the long sandy beaches to the south of the island in just a short drive away, in the north there are wonderful hiking trails with steep cliffs to the sea , in the centre of the island you will find centuries-old forests with plenty of deers, and also expansive moorland. Hiking, biking, swimming, fishing - anything is possible, and in the meantime our golfers can find four 18-hole courses - no more than 20 to 25 minutes drive by car.
'Just around the corner', is the cosy restaurant 'Louisekroen', which offers all sorts of beef varieties. 'Hummerhytte' awaits you on the harbour in Listed, our immediate neighbour 2 km away, under the stars or in the old smoking fireplace you can enjoy grilled salmon, fresh lobsters and oysters from Limfjord, delivered fresh every day.
And in Svaneke you will find everything - from the hotel restaurant in 'Siemens Gaard' right on the harbour, through ice cream parlors near the glass factory of Pernille Bülow to the cosy 'Bryghus', the brewery with home-brewed beer and delicious food. And the classic bakery or Bolcherküche in the market and, and, and…
A few minutes’ drive away to the west you will find the excellent glass factory 'Baltic Seaglass' on the romantic coastal road, just behind it is the Bornholm Museum of Agriculture in Melsted, the tourist attraction Gudhjem with its smokehouse, and then immediately followed by the art museum on the way to Allinge, which is also architecturally very attractive. From here you can set off to the golf course in Rø or to the rushing waterfalls in Døndalen.
Rather stay at home? Our large garden offers plenty of space for relaxing hours in the sun with a light breeze - maybe a coffee and a homemade cake along with it? Or - upon request - maybe a Danish 'frokost' for lunch?
The whole garden behind and beside the building complex is open to you. It measures about 5,500 m². Only the separate portion of the house 'Lille Huset' is reserved for tenants of this house. A spacious lawn area rolls gently down to the sea below the building. Old apple trees bear abundant fruits, currant and gooseberry bushes and blackberry hedges invite you for a harvest.
We are glad to have our well in a corner of the garden near the sea, which supplies nice sprinkling water in hot summer. In addition, the 'spring terrace' invites you with table and chairs for lunch under the parasol.
Behind the ivy-covered rocky stone wall begins the public beach area, but no pathway crosses and is almost exclusively used by the inhabitants of our hotel complex. Reeds, ivy, elder are the vegetation, other than that the large round stones invite you for balancing acts, a little bit of sand for is there for kids to dig and play, and finally a lively streamlet splashes over the pebbles into the sea, which can surge enormously after rainfall and snowmelts.
There is a short beach road that goes to the harbour of Bølshavn for swimming. There is a swim ladder, and you can dive into the refreshing Baltic Sea.
The upper part of the garden near the building is at ground level and is dominated by a century-old mulberry tree, which bears fruits by August. But be careful: the colour of berries stain heavily, but they taste delicious tart and sweet. In the corner of the terrace is one of our fig trees. No one quite believes it: in the far north they actually ripen and taste as sweet as sugar.
