Barrier-free apartment on the Son Fam finca
Main house: Renovated and partly newly build in 2012, the finca with large pool (5 x 10 m) is situated few kilometres away from the sea in the gentle hilly landscape between Porto Christo, Cala Millor, and Son Carrio. Consequently, the tourists can connect the vibrant beach and nightlife of the coastal town to the contemplative country life. The main house consists of the island-specific Marès lime sand brick giving Majorca this distinctive colour. Built in a wall-enclosed, 7000-sq.m ground, the property features a pool house with 2 separate, handicapped accessible apartments, a covered outdoor barbecue, and a double garage with a separate utility room. It offers 2 separate, large fridges with freezing compartment for supplies and beverages, washing machine, dryer, and an ironing station. A spacious driveway with parking space for up to 6 cars leads to the outdoor area around the main house, the pool area, and the adjoining building. It is laid out completely stageless with natural flagstones. 2 stairs lead to a covered entrance platform. The facade next to it is decorated with a ceramic picture of a female Majorcan artist. It is a unique copy made for this finca. The interior design of the house is very individual, but island-specific. It refers to a rural origin of the house, which developed to a stylish country house through a more sophisticated lifestyle of the owner. Five steps on the left lead to the slightly elevated, spacious living room, dominated by an open fireplace. Modern furnishings invite you to sit around the open fireplace, so that even during winter time, the finca offers snugness and comfort. Nevertheless, the narrow, decent radiators of the central heating reveal, that guests, who want to escape the cold winter of their hometown in the cooler months of December, January, and February don't have to rely on the existing stock of wood. This property is ideal for guests, who want to overwinter, also because during this time orange, mandarin and lemon trees are flowering in a spaciously laid out part of the ample garden. More on this will follow later. Let us take a look to the Majorcan kitchen with modern, new gas stove with electric child-proof lock, fridge with freezing compartment, microwave, oven, coffee maker, toaster, etc. Nothing is left to be desired, neither technically, nor concerning the equipment. A few footsteps lead to the outdoor area, where you can have your first coffee in the morning on a covered breakfast terrace. During winter months, you might prefer taking your coffee in the adjacent conservatory, glazed on two sides, with terrific views to the sea, the gentle sloping countryside, and the sunrise. If you slide the large glass door, you will get to the 22-sq.m roof terrace, embraced by a stone balustrade. Modern seating furniture and deck chairs invite you to have dinner under a large awning or to spend some time with a glass of red wine. Through an external staircase, you will get to another small roof terrace that is a romantic place with unlimited view to the about 3 km distant sea from Cala Millor to Porto Christo. Everyone who has been above here once wants to spend a night under the starry sky in situ. From here, you overlook the ample property and you will notice that there is only one neighbouring house in a distance of 200 m. So you are all alone, but as well only 3 km away from the nearest beach (S´ Illot), 6 km from Porto Christo with its marina and the well-known Caves del Drach, 6 km from the lively Calla Millor, 10 km from Manacor, from where you can get in 40 minutes to Palma through a speed way or by train. Through an external staircase, you will get to the south side of the house with an at-grade, barrier-free entry to the 19.2-sq.m bedroom of the house. It is fully air-conditioned. As there is also a 13.2-sq.m en-suite bathroom, this part of the house is suited for guests with mobility handicap or with wheelchair. For those guests, the bathroom was arranged 2012 with a barrier-free, extra-large shower cubicle and armatures adapted to the needs of the disabled. Through 5 - 6 stairs, you will get to another double room with en-suite bathroom, as well as to children's room with a smaller, foldaway double bed (2 x 190 cm x 80 cm) and small en-suite bathroom with shower and toilet. You will notice that the finca is a place of vitality, because across from the back entry door, there is a door leading to the bodega of the house. A former owner rebuilt the old water cistern under the kitchen to a rustic wine cellar. According to prior agreement, guests of the finca can try and buy favourable or exquisite wines of the country and culinary specialities during their stay. Younger and older guests will both appreciate, that the south side of the house not only offers cosy seating under the pavilion, encircled by two large, old bougainvilleas. Here, there is also shade through palm trees and a huge rubber tree, so that even in the most intense summer heat a parasol is not needed. Adjacent, there is a small orange plantation, which invites the tourist refreshing with sun-ripened fruits or pressing the orange juice for breakfast. The second core of Son Fam is the pool area. Newly tiled with blue tesserae, the pool (5 x 10 m) features a gentle sloping boarding ramp with handrail and stairs, which extend through the whole pool width. Once more, thought has been given to the elder guests and to everyone, who appreciates a safe access to the pool, as well as an effortless exit. There are 4 large palm trees line the pool that is lit up impressively during the night through many exterior lamps. Here, there are so many beach loungers, so you do not have to reserve them like in other hotels. Apartments: If you holiday in the finca with 8 people, you will not have to relinquish privacy. In the former summerhouse at the pool, 2 separate apartments were newly built, both of them with a large bathroom and a small kitchenette. The apartments are barrier-free, handicapped accessible, completely air-conditioned, and isolated, what makes the stay pleasant during winter and summer time. An extractor, TV (Sat-TV), internet connection (LAN and Wi-Fi), and an own, small outdoor seat are featured in both apartments. For all guests a covered, masoned barbecue is available, which can be controlled with charcoal or with gas. Throughout the whole year, a gardener maintains the garden with many palm trees, almond trees, orange and lemon trees, groves and Mediterranean shrubs, and flowers.
We are a Bavarian, extended family that fulfilled the dream of a house in the South. When we will retire in a few years, we want to spend the large part of the year in the house.
The Owner purchased this apartment in 2012
A German lived in the house for more than 25 years. He enlarged and maintained it to a German standard. With much attention to the detail, he created a paradise, which he had to leave, because of his age and for health reasons. Therefore, Son Fam is not a holiday house for that matter, but a country house, which reflects 25 years of living. Beside the architecture of the house, the elegantly laid out garden, the orange plantation, and the Mediterranean cultivation is evidence from there.
Son Fam will be enjoyed by all, but especially by those tourists, who are handicapped, so that it is not easy to find a suitable holiday location, like families with a handicapped family member, elder people, who like more comfort and accessibility, or people, who like to enjoy a holiday after an accident or after rehabilitation. For those people, we created and furnished large parts of the finca barrier-free, and we and our network are glad to be available for any help.
Thanks to Eva for meeting us at 5am in Porto Cristo to take us to the apartment. We had a fantastic stay, the apartment was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed for a relaxing and enjoyable stay.
Our apartment window overlooked the pool which was small but clean and the surrounding area well maintained.
The bed was extremely comfortable, we loved the wet room shower and the air con made for lovely long sleeps along with the fact that it was so quiet, definitely for us much better than package holiday to a noisy hotel.
We loved Cala Millor and would recommend the Asia chinese restaurant for dinner, the British Bulldog for breakfast and the Pizzeria which is directly opposite Cafe del Sol. Cafe del sol itself was a great place to relax at night, live music every evening and friendly staff.
All in all a very enjoyable holiday we would definitely recommend and hope to return again.
Danke !
