Two bedrooms, two bathrooms one en-suite, a comfortable kitchen and a spacious living and dining area on about 80 m2. The terraces are accessible via large floor-standing patio doors and create a spacious living area together with the interior space. Fly screens, even in front of the large patio doors, make sure that the little pests stay outside and not spoil the holiday fun. The traditional lime and trowel plaster is painted with an organic clay colour. St. Catarina terracotta tiles of different formats make the flooring. The tiles are manufactured nearby (about 20 km away) in a traditional way. The floor is sealed with organic oil.
Outdoor life - on the spacious terraces
The terraces and grounds are maintained as a haven for idleness. Enjoying the silence, observing the shimmering heat in summer. The cicadas sing along. Cool drinks. Life can be stressful even in Casa Ria. Quiet and sunny day on the terrace, starry sky. The only thing that never goes on holiday often here is the sun. The mature trees give the large property a special atmosphere. Now starts the holiday. Verrrryyy slowly.
Too much sun? Then get under the pergola. The terraces are equipped with sufficient loungers, chairs and tables. For all seating there is padding. If that is not enough then there is plenty of seating with orange groves, almond trees, olive trees, Alfarubeiras and... For example, on the threshing floor of the old Quinta, the Eira. If you would like to get exercise, then there is a private petanque (boule) play area or the possibility to badminton. The game equipment is waiting for you.
Light & darkness
Many lamps and bulbs with almost as many switches make it inside and outside possible to produce many different lighting options.
On the other hand nobody has to think about exterior lighting for the entrance, courtyard and the Eira. These areas are connected by means of timers, so there is always sufficient outdoor lighting for early risers or also for those who come back home late.
Rejuvenating sleep - sweet dreams
The French bed 160 * 200 cm with a slatted frame is adjustable in hardness and comfort mattress supports a relaxing, peaceful sleep. Wake up refreshed and rested.
The mattresses are engineered to breathe well. The bedding is made of 100 % cotton. So just lie down and feel asleep with pleasant dreams. Wake up the next morning rested, refreshed and fit.
Single wall lamps, ceiling lamps and night lamps with switch take care of lighting. Windows with fly screens, electric blinds can be opened from the bed by remote control to let sun in or can also be closed to darken the room. High open wooden ceilings and excellent cross ventilation options ensure a comfortable climate indoors.
Bedroom oriented to the southwest. Access to the terrace. The French bed measures 160 * 200 cm. Next to the bed there are two bedside tables made of granite surface for small utensils and one bedside lamp on each. A spacious corner wardrobe offers plenty of wardrobe space. A floor-standing window completes the furnishing.
Sleep separately in two single beds. Each bed is 100 * 200 cm large, so you can turn around at times without the risk of falling down. Holiday with friends? Then the beds can be pushed together in no time. Two bedside tables with small drawers. A built-in wardrobe 200 * 230 cm completes the features. Orientation: Northwest.
Traditional plaster style impregnated with organic oil gives the walls an antique look. The wash basins are made of very special sandstone. The washbasins are made of very special sandstone. Here many fossil inclusions can be found. Who will find more comfort? Wheelchair accessible showers. Oh by the way, Casa Ria has a town water supply and thus a tested water quality and almost lime-free water.
Eat or play together. The dining table measures 150 * 90 cm. For 4 persons and also for more table set-up there is no demand for space. If it is still not sufficient, the table can be pulled out in no time. Now the table can be covered up to the brim or it can accommodate up to 6 persons comfortably. Ample crockery is available. Comfortable and stable chairs with cushions for cosy get-togethers.
When the weather is once again too nice to sit inside, then jump out onto the terrace. The patio doors allow plenty of light into the apartment. A pergola protects against too much sun with awning. Nothing is far away and one always has an eye on everything. Again, there is a nice table with plenty of space. Comfortable, adjustable chairs. Now admire the view across the large plot and in to the nature.
For all sophisticated meal times, everything should be available. Candle holders, table runners, decanters, red and white wine glasses. Beer and water glasses and something for the traditional brandy.
Cooking together. It becomes very easy here. Sufficient space to conjure up your own favourite dishes or treats. Around the apartment you will find significant herbs for Mediterranean cuisine. Rosemary, chilli, spicy wild thyme, oregano, lemon balm, peppermint and lemongrass for a delicious tea or a refreshing cold drink.
The granite countertop is durable and resilient and offers plenty of space so that the preparation becomes easier. Don’t want to cook? Then quick little things can be made in the oven or microwave. The restaurants in the area are happy to present you their culinary specialties of Algarve.
To make cooking even more fun-filled we have the kitchen equipped with an induction hob. Oven, dishwasher, extractor hood, microwave, + + +, simply everything that comes with a household.
Comfort can begin with packing the suitcase. The apartments are furnished large and comfortable, so that your suitcases can stay lighter. Hair dryer, travel iron box, bath towels, beach mats which can safely stay at home. Some German and English books are on the shelf and should satisfy one or the other passionate readers.
All facilities have been caringly selected with the intention of creating a warm, homely atmosphere.
Activities around: Casa Ria
The choice of holiday activities is always a personal decision. Casual barefoot stroll on a deserted beach, indulging in historical European or Moorish culture. Sporty.
Experiencing one of the many festivals and free music events. Horse markets with thoroughbred horses and beautiful carriages and trailer combinations. Fairs, markets and more celebrations and processions. Plunging in to the carnival. And the friendliness and serenity of Algarvians everywhere. Time for a wine, fado, snacks simply dozing a little bit in the shade of the midday sun.
In the Ria Formosa park there is plenty of information about this unique piece of nature. The rare Portuguese water dogs show at special trials what they are capable of. By the way, we are with our Chily Portuguese champion in this discipline.
We also offer children's beds with accessories for infants. Put us to the test and ask for additional equipment.
Kirsten N. born and raised in Westerland / Sylt. Practically grew up with the rental of apartments. Michael S., born and raised in Lübeck. We got to know each other in 1986 in Flensburg
Kirsten N. | Michael S. purchased this apartment in 2010
In 2006 we went from Uelvesbüll (North Frisia) to Sagres. With a few detours around 6,000 km. An incomparable experience. In 2008, we started off with a sailing catamaran, Alea, in Flensburg and arrived here, and we stayed instead of continuing further. We learned sailing on the tour. Of course, we travel back and forth by car between North Germany and Algarve or take the plane. We are flexible. So we also want to be your hosts. We are pleased to welcome you in this beautiful part of Europe.

Almost anything works, nothing is a must. Oh, the sun is almost always shining! Just take a look...
We offer modern comfort standards at reasonable prices without additional costs. This is achieved, wherein we do not charge any fee for natural resources. With the installed photovoltaic system we will have a energy plus house in future. Let us wait and see. By the way, 90 % of all the work in Casa Ria were done by the Portuguese from the surrounding areas. We thank everyone for their great cooperation.
The decisive factor was the property that exudes a unique tranquillity and relaxation, we had concluded. We walked about 30 minutes over the 2 -acre plot, enjoyed the quiet atmosphere. The oranges that were not processed since probably about 20 years were surprisingly juicy given that there was no irrigation. The many old trees, including mimosa, oranges, tangerines, several figs, almonds, pomegranates... This is a fantastic view over the whole property as seen from the ancient ruins.
It was clear what we wanted. A little later it was done. The adventure began. In 2011, we planned the project. Now even the Atlantic Ocean can be seen from the rooftop terraces. Casa Ria was completed in January 2013 in traditional local country style. Here, each bedroom has its own bathroom. Kitchens are comprehensive, comfortable and modern. All rooms have separate adjustable under floor heating and feature electric blinds. The power for heating and hot water is mainly sponsored by the sun and stored in a 1500 l reservoir. Casa Ria also produces electricity with an almost invisible photovoltaic system hidden in the plot. Inside we have used organic [clay] colour, which has a very pleasant tone with its special light refraction. The wood preservatives for the 4.50 m high open wooden ceilings are also fully organic. It is the same with the wood stain on the ceilings and doors. Do you have any questions? We would be glad to answer them. We would also be happy to support you on site.
We stayed in Casa Ria appartment Este during four weeks and we enjoyed every minute of it. The appartment was well equipped with nice furniture and an excellent kitchen. Every day we made fresh orange juice from organges we picked in the garden. We made long walks in the surroundings and with a small car we could go to the beach for even longer walks and bird-watching, visit nearby villages and other interesting objects. Every Saturday we went to the market in Olhao were the local farmers sold their products. At the market we also bought a lot of exciting fishes and cooked them together with herbs from the garden. The weather was good most of the time, but of course we had a few rainy days too. But thanks to the good floor-heating in the appartment, we were warm and had a cozy time watching dvd-films (borrowed from our hosts Kirsten and Michael). We would love to come back again, maybe to pick figs and almonds and strongly recommend Kirsten and Michael and their Casa-Ria to others who are looking for a perfect stay in the beautiful countryside of Algarve.

PS: Wir kommen bestimmt wieder!
Very nearby: Olhão, the pearl of Eastern Algarve and fishing village is about 7 km away, Fuzeta, fishing, beach and more for about 5 km. In Fuzeta there is a small beach. Both the places have ferries or water taxis to get to the almost deserted offshore sandbanks of Ria Formosa or to the fishermen’s island, Culatra. Just the ride itself is thrilling, there is much to discover and with the water taxis it goes very swiftly. Ria Formosa with the bike path that connects Spain with the west coast, lies just 3 km / 5 min away.
The biking trail Ecovia do Litoral runs from V.R. St. Antonio, the border city on Guadiana up to Capo Dão Vicente in the extreme southwest of Algarve. It leads over long stretches through the unique Ria Formosa, which is an experience not only for bird lovers. One of Europe's most important ecosystems it almost always hosts flamingos, storks, kingfishers and several species of aquatic birds. Moreover in some places traditional sea salt is still formed. The hiking trail Via Algarviana runs somewhat in the countryside and here there is peace and you can experience pure nature.
The first golf course is about 9 km / 14 minutes away. Kite surfing, windsurfing, surfing and diving starts from Faro, Ilha de Faro 35 km / 35 minutes. Individual Ria tours by boat and larger ferries to Ilha da Barreta / Desserta are there from Faro. Historic old town 19 km / 30 minutes. About 1 km away, there is a snack bar and a small supermarket. There are more found in about 2.5 km distance in the direction of Ria Formosa. In this environment you will also find typical Olarias (potteries), a hairdresser, antique dealers…
Shopping * Shopping * Shopping
There is a Pingo Doce located 4 km away, an Aldi and in just one more km there is another Pingo. Then directly west of Olhão there is Lidel and Continente. On the way there, many small super markets, market halls and numerous retail shops, restaurants and bars, outdoor pool, churches, chapels, squares, typical small parks can be found. All the major supermarkets are open 7 days a week from 9am to 10pm. There are only few compulsory holidays when they will be closed. Olhão has a market on every Saturday morning.
On the Eastern Algarve, Sotavento, in Lee there is so much to discover from the leeward side, whether it is your own peace, serenity or slowness. The Algarve coast is arguably one of the most beautiful coasts of Europe, which offers something for everyone’s taste, from the vast sandy beaches in the east, nature reserve with variety of species in the centre and breathtaking cliffs. Be enchanted by the light and the scents of Algarve (it is not heavy).
In the nearby places, Olhão, Fuzeta, Tavira Faro, St. Bras, Loulé, the Portuguese calmness still prevails. Not flocked by tourists, visitors can experience the typical lifestyle here, the laid-back friendliness of Algarvians and a normal infrastructure. Also there is no mass tourism. Casa Ria is very good and easily accessible and is located on a paved road with very less traffic in a sophisticated environment. From the airport it is about 24 km and it takes around 35 minutes to reach. The approximately 2 hectares of land spreads out in front of the house and offers a decent distance to the neighbours, so that privacy is always guaranteed.
Up to Tavira, which was once the Roman town, it is about 21 km away. It is 15 km / 20 minutes to St. Lucia, the seaside resort with narrow gauge railway through Ria Formosa to the offshore dunes and the seemingly endless beach. Ayamonte, a Spanish gem right on the border of the River Guadiana, is 53 km / 45 minutes away. Seville, the capital of Andalusia, is always worth a detour, which can be reached after about 180 miles and after about 1 hour 45 minutes.
Marina, dolphin rides, diving, restaurants, bars and golf, golf, golf in Vilamoura 40 km / 36 minutes, Albufeira, rocky beach, old town 60 km / 45 minutes, Carvoeiro rocky bay with holiday resort 80 km / 60 minutes, Portimão, Praia da Rocha, postcard view 86 km / 60 minutes, Lagos, the pearl in the west 105 km / 65 minutes, Sagres, in the extreme southwest of continental Europe, then comes America 132 km / 90 minutes, Monchique, the placid small town in the mountains with regional handicrafts 100 km / 70 minutes.
To the North
Loulé 32 km, city of merchants and artisans with unique market / 25 minutes, Mertula 100 km / 70 minutes, and up to Lisbon, which is always worth seeing, it is just less than 300 km.
3 km to Rio Formosa Nature Reserve, exciting biotope in changing tides (max about 2-5 to 3 m tidal range / Atlantic). Small paradise for bird lovers. We can tell you where to find the flamingos.
Or just stay 'at home', where everyone can find what he seeks.
Need more information? We look forward to your questions.
Yours, Kirsten N. + Michael S.
