We are a semi retired couple. Herbert, a political scientist used to teach at Brooklyn College in NYC. I, Sevana, am an architect. We live in Washington DC.
Sevana Bunke purchased this house in 2004
We went to CR on vacation for the very first time in 2004 – and fell in love with the Carrillo/Samara area. Within 2 month we had bought a piece of land and I finally had the opportunity to design my very own house; a dream as an architect! It became my baby! It was so much fun, both designing it and coming down often to follow the construction. We were also so lucky to work with the best builder in the area.
We spent the first night in our new home in December 2007. We now come down for a month twice a year; to take care of and enjoy our home and to swim at the most beautiful beach along the entire coast!
Our home is an architect's dream and a work of love. The style is unique for the area and the attention to details makes it especially functional and comfortable. It is also superbly located – in terms of view, security, peacefulness and still so close to everything.
And, as a renter wrote, “your home encompasses magic”.
We stayed in rainy season, but still had a lot of good weather. The location is great - a car is recommended, the house is very nice and we especially enjoyed the deck, pool, view, and howler monkeys in the nearby trees. The house was clean and well laid out. Free wifi and tv a real bonus. Easy walking to a few local restaurants. Driving into Samara is 10 minutes and Carrillo beach just a couple of minutes away is beautiful and untouched. The locals are friendly and helpful and despite only having minimal tourist Spanish we had no issues with language. Highly recommended.
You will love this immaculate home with a gorgeous view and pool. Well-appointed with all the conveniences you will need: comfortable beds and furnishings, plentiful linens, towels, pool-side and beach chairs. The home is located within an easy walk to several good restaurants and a small grocery. The beautiful, calm, beach is an easy 10 minute walk, or 3 minute drive. Lovely palm trees for shade and/or hanging a hammock! A 10 minute drive takes you to Samara for more restaurant options, beach activities and shopping. Friendly, safe area with several great tour companies to help plan your outings or just explore on your own. If you enjoy horseback riding, a two-hour ride with Luis (located right in Carrillo) is a must! Finally --- be sure to experience the beautiful sunsets from the balcony or the lookout over Playa Carrillo.
We would highly recommend Casa Sevana in beautiful Playa Carrillo. The house is very comfortable with all the comforts of home you would expect. When we had a slight issue with hot water upon arrival, Sevana responded immediately via email and her local Manager had someone out the next day to fix the issue. We loved using the pool everyday and the local beach is within easy distance and totally unspoiled. Do not hesitate to book this lovely house in this little spot of paradise, you will not be disappointed!
Our family of five were so impressed with Casa Sevana. We had everything we needed to cook and barbecue. Our seven year old granddaughter loved the beautiful pool. We all would get in to cool off and relax. The bedrooms were comfortable and AC saved us during the night. It was quite warm and muggy. But the fans helped a lot. Was a great location to store and restaurants. The bus stop was right on the corner. We loved the downstairs bathroom. Water in the shower was lukewarm but felt good when hot. We even had a baby gecko in there. Overall, this house was beyond our expectations, with the view, wild life and care of the property. The property manager, Mellissa was great to work with. Thank you Sevana and Herbert, for sharing your home.
So much has been said about Casa Sevana and it's all true, I can't say enough on a wonderful experience my wife and I had. I could write a long entry on all the great things this home offers and the people of Carrillo but in closing take a love one or family you won't be disappointed .

The property was as expected, we visited last year so there was a coming home feel. A comfortable knowledge of places and where things were kept, what to do etc. This year we were accompanied by my son, his wife and my granddaughter 2 1/2 yrs. going on 21. the dynamic was way different. Most times I would not have changed a thing, my granddaughter is the apple of my eye so i am biased. Now the but… A young child brings it's own challenges, restrictions and time constraints. So if you are ok with all of that. ( we see it everywhere across Costa Rica, adults traveling with children of all ages, they are part of the fabric of Costa Rica and not looked at like they are in America. they are not ruining the party they are a special guest at the party. I was concerned for her as the house as it has a circular stairway. My concern was unfounded. she enjoyed it, and paid special attention to always being on the widest part of the step. We always accompanied her up and down but she was never far, so that was not an issue. The new knife sharpener made food prep, more of joy than a task. (thumbs up). Though we have been twice to this house and have enjoyed it very much, as time goes on, there is so much of the world to see that we will likely be on a different adventure next year. But my age has taught me to never say never, you make yourself a liar every time!
If this were my house I may make changes, something to do with shading the pool during the hottest part of the day, as that is when you want to use it the most. I may add some sort of gripping surface to the tile as you enter the house, Can be slippery.. Air conditioners work great. The house is fun and unique. Of course the view is killer.
El Toucan Pizza just down the street is funky, don't be frightened off by the exterior, fun and good food, a bit warm out back as it gets little breeze but don't let your "American" attitudes keep you from trying it. El Colibri is the Jewel in the crown if you like steak, and a good Mojito, best I have had in CR. Hula Jungla is't Mac burger, they have good food too. Try the local Sodas, Tico food from the source, cheap and good .
I have enjoyed dealing with Sevana she has been a straight shooter. What you believe is your business, but I have no vested interest here, this is a good comfortable place to hang your hat, a quiet place to call home, close enough to the "Big" city Siren's call….. Samara is just over there……
Carrillo is Costa Rica for Real -- a Friendly & low-keyed little town, with a mixed population of locals and expatriates. The palm lined Beach is a piece of Paradise with white sand, clear and calm water – perfect for kids – and no buildings in sight. It is never crowded and there is good snorkeling at its reefs.
Apart from the beach, food shopping and restaurants, Carrillo offers a tour operator, a small zoo, sportfishing, hiking and horseback riding. Most services are on the main street, a 2-3 minute walk from our home. There are close to 10 restaurants within a 5 minute walk. The beach is less than 0.5 miles (750 meters) away.
Nearby Sámara (4 miles away) has many more shops and restaurants, some nightlife, banks and ATMs, surfing (ideal for beginners), canopy tours and massage.
