What are 2 empty-nest Southerners doing in Maine? Absolutely loving it! The Oliver Davis House is our retreat, and through the years many guests have enjoyed 'the way life should be.' We love gardening, antiqueing, entertaining, picnics on the beach, and walks along the ocean. And spending time with our kids and friends when they come to visit.

The Oliver Davis House compound is a beautiful small historic home and guest cottage that retains its charm while offering every modern convenience and comfort. Located in the heart of Kennebunkport, it offers something for everyone--an easy walk to Dock Square or the ocean. The house is decorated with antiques, but it's stylish, not frumpy. Luxurious, but not over the top. It's a place where you can get back to basics.
The private garden at the Oliver Davis House is a major attraction in summer. Designed in a traditional style that complements the period architecture of the house, the main part of the garden is filled with hydrangeas and offers the perfect spot for afternoon cocktails. There's a separate patio with a fountain for al fresco dining, and a small intimate space reserved for naps in the hammock shielded by espaliered apple trees and woodsy ferns, rhododendrum, lilacs, and Japanese maple. The gently sound of wind chimes blowing in the breeze make the garden even more relaxing. Equipped with gas grill, fire pit, torchieres--the garden at the Oliver Davis House doubles our living space and offers a wonderful seasonal option to enjoy the outdoors in summer and fall.
This is a unique house, built in 1827 and decorated with antiques (the beds are firm and 21st century.) The 2 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms allowed for us and our friends to be very private when we wanted to. The master bedroom has little spaces with desks so you can do some work if you want to spoil your vacation.
It is better stocked with supplies than the average Walmart. The owner warns you about the low ceiling in the basement where the washer/dryer are located (as well as beach chairs, etc) and my bald head has the bruises to show his warnings must be taken seriously. There is a very comfortable living room , dining room and useful kitchen.
The location is one minute from Dock Square but quiet, even in the lovely garden. You have to drive to beaches if you are taking chairs, etc but the beaches are great and the owner can give you tips about where to go.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. (warning-not a place for small kids.)
Our stay at the Oliver Davis house was a wonderful experience. The home is historic and set in the historic district, near the harbor, shops, galleries, and restaurants. It is an easy and lovely walk for sight seeing, eating out, or shopping. The home is beautifully decorated, charming and immaculate. The owners provided a booklet of everything we needed to know about the house, nearby restaurants and activities. One sunny afternoon, we walked a few steps to board a sailboat which gives tours of the harbor and beyond. I enjoyed sitting in the secluded garden and reading. We loved walking to the Colony Hotel for drinks on the lawn, overlooking the harbor.
We would most highly recommend this lovely home to friends and family.
I write "experience" because that is what this is...you will truly feel as if you have left reality and gone to heaven! The house is gorgeous, and the location is UNBEATABLE. You are literally in the heart of town and hear the horse drawn carriages plip plop outside your bedroom window.
In addition, the owner is kind and so quick in responding to any questions.
I CANNOT recommend this house enough!!!
Loved the house. Great history. Great library of books. All 8 of us read a number of the art and history books. Walked to town every night for ice cream or lobster roll! We went whale watching, sailing and fishing. The house had everything we needed ... Thanks Heyward. The owner was always accessible and wiling to make sure we had whatever we needed.
This is a wonderful property- beautifully maintained and decorated, with amenities that one would expect and need. The owners have done an excellent job of making this feel like one's own vacation home. They are extremely responsive and attentive. Kennebunkport offers many activities- the beach, antiquing, great restaurants, etc.
We are a family of 4 (2 adults-2 toddlers) so this place fit our needs perfectly . Great location, you could walk to everything in town. The neighbors were helpful and friendly too! A small beach-Colony Beach, is in walking distance, under a mile. A few other beach areas are close by too but we preferred to drive to those due to the kids. The inside of the home was well appointed. You really didn't need to bring a thing! We did not rent the guest house because we didn't need the room, but what a great idea for those that need a little extra space. Overall the property was clean and well maintained. The owners were very easy to work with and provided a wealth of information prior to our stay. Inside the house everything is labeled so no guessing on how to turn on lights, operate TV's etc. The kitchen had every tool, pot, dish, glass you would ever need! There is a small nook in the kitchen if you would like to sit there for meals but also a larger dining area-dining room if you have more guests. The home is almost 200 hundred years old, so keep that in mind. The home in not an open concept type home if that is what you are looking for. But plenty of rooms to relax in. The upstairs has two large bedrooms with very nice furniture and linens. Each bedroom has its own bathroom with tub/shower combo. The master bedroom has a sitting/dressing room as well. Very large space overall. The property is beautiful. Very cute backyard and sitting areas. At night the lights come on and accent the beautiful pergola. We look to rent a house each summer for vacation and this is a place we would return to! Can’t beat the location! Thanks so much for the great vacation!
Kennebunkport: Maine's coast at its finest! Quintessential New England village with charming historic houses, a gorgeous walk along the rocky Atlantic coast, and wonderful sandy beaches. Outstanding antiquing--from elegant shops to flea markets. And fabulous restaurants to suit every palate and price range. Attractions: Walker's Point, home to George and Barbara Bush; the Nott House, an historic sea captain's home; Dock Square shops and restaurants; lobster boats and a lighthouse. Carriage rides, bicycling, sailing and sightseeing cruises, and in winter, sleigh rides. A perfect get away every season that truly lives up to Maine's promise of 'life the way it should be.' Easy day trips to Boston, Portland and Portsmouth.
