If Sun and Fun is what you are looking for: Look NO further.

Casa Del Sol

Picture yourself in the exciting tropics in your own luxury villa, with sun-kissed skies and the sparkling blue Caribbean Sea nearby. Feel your body succumb to the cool ocean breeze as it gently cascades over you, draining your stresses away! It’s not a dream! It’s Casa Del Sol!

Casa Del Sol is a tropical delight, full of Caribbean color and charm located on the southern most point of the Caribbean in Mexico. The ocean front villa overlooks the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world. This 3 unit villa is completely private. Wake up in the mornings to a gorgeous sunrise and fall asleep at night listening to the gentle seaside.

On the Beach level, the breezy bedrooms are located on either ends of the villa for maximum privacy for your group. The rooms are spacious with a queen size bed, single trundle bed, a 7 foot couch made from local hard woods, reading chairs and dinning room table for 4. Feel free to hang from the walls in a hammock to enjoy the flowing breezes as you take an afternoon siesta.

Take an exciting swim out front in the coral patches visiting with all the tropical fish, lobsters, spotted eagle rays, sea turtles, and many more. The best way to describe the snorkeling in front is to imagine yourself looking into one of the most impressive stocked large salt water fish tanks around and next you know, you are in it. It doesn't get any better than this.

All rooms are equipped with ceiling fans and have stunning seaside views. You will not find any televisions, nor will you want one since there are so many things to do at the house or nearby.

There are many miles of beach to comb searching for the largest/brightest conch shell. Kayaking out to the barrier reef, biking down the beach road, tossing horse shoes, observing many types of birds, star gazing at night, or just relaxing on the beach with a book is a great way to spend your vacation.

Luxury abounds as the living area is open and breezy and fully equipped for your relaxing enjoyment.

The patios and verandas provide panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, and spectacular Caribbean sunrises. In the mornings you will see the sun rise while looking out into the Caribbean and in the evenings looking back in the lagoon the sun will set.

Other units are available or use the entire house for your vacation. Please inquire.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My wife and I stayed at the upper apartment in la Casa del Sol in December 2017. Xcalak is a place for those who like to watch stars, snorkel and go fishing. It is located off the electric grid in a world quite different of the major Cancun resorts. The house sits on a sandy beach stretching for miles and is flushed by a steady sea breeze. Very few people live here and you feel lucky when meeting anybody at the sea shore; in our opinion, the neighborhood appears more secure than any of the five boroughs of the City of New York. The coral reef is second to none (but, probably, the Great Barrier Reef), the turquoise water is crystal clean, and fishing from a kayak is fun. The house provides all essential comforts of civilization (including electric power from the solar batteries, cold and hot running water and even the Internet connection) without the obtrusive nuisance of television and cell service. The kitchen has everything required for cooking and serving meals; we stocked up on the way from the airport and then replenished food supplies from the local grocery truck and from the Mahahual bakery (~40 min drive). We found the apartment neat and well furnished; the housekeepers Aaron and Stacey live on the premises, they are very cooperative and efficient. The owner provides filtered water in 20 gallon bottles free of charge. We have never thought that there are so many pyramids in Yucatan; those of Chacchoben are within ~1.5-2 hr drive and there more archaeological sites around. The local fishermen have, apparently, started a pyramid of their own in a couple of kilometers down the beach and now their pyramid looks like a pile of rocks approximately 3 m high. At night some mosquitoes and no-see-ums show up, particularly, from the rear of the house; however, screens keep them safely out and we did not suffer any inconvenience.

We would like to come to la Casa del Sol again and strongly recommend the place for anybody tired of the routine of all-inclusive resorts and looking for a true get away.

Great home in a great location

  • 4 of 5

We loved Xcalak and really enjoyed staying here. As with the other places in town, the electricity is solar and the water is from a rain catchment system. So, we had some power outages late in the evenings and made an effort to conserve water. My understanding is that the owner is working on improving the battery system to reduce the possibility of late night outages on electricity. We were in town to fish, and found that the house had good proximity to several of the best areas. If you're doing more guided fishing and planning to spend most of your time in Chetumal bay, the guides will want to meet in town and it could be advantageous to stay closer. This house is a bit more remote, and required a 20-30 minute drive to get to the boat launch area.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review Ben. On solar systems, batteries go bad after a period of time, usually 4 - 5 years in the warmer climate. The current batteries were on their last leg and new ones have been ordered and being replaced next week. Sorry for the couple outages during the late evenings/early mornings. Guides will also pick you up in front of the house by boat, to avoid any driving at all.

Met our expectations!

Casa del Sol was lovely! We had the beach to ourselves and the snorkeling was really great. Lots of fish, a variety of corals and also rays. Close in reef just past the sea grass was the best.

The mangrove complex was not accessible unfortunately, as we had hoped to take a kayak into it.

The unit was cozy, clean and well provisioned. There were also plenty of paperbacks to read, bikes to ride and plenty of loungers and hammocks for relaxing. Stacy the caretaker was helpful and pleasant. The beach in front of the home was clean, unlike the rest of the beach areas in Xcalak. Because of that, I don’t recommend walks along it due to seaweed and trash washed up.

Brent was very responsive and helpful. He checked in on us a couple times via text to see how we were doing.

The view from the roof was incredible and sunsets and sunrises amazing!

This is definitely a must stay for those who want to be away from the maddening crowds, and don’t mind “roughing it” a bit. I.e. off grid so be mindful of electric and water useage. Nice to have solar power and we were never without power or water. Internet worked great!

We hope to visit again!

wonderful Place

  • 5 of 5

Great place to get away. Solar powered, great views from awesome rooftop where you can see the stars at night with hardly any light pollution and see the ocean and lagoon during the day.

Great snorkeling right off the beach . Fishing if you want it..

Truck comes by almost daily with fresh fruits and veggies. Try the Pibill (sp?) Mayan pulled pork with spices.

Nice it has kayaks.

Great coral and fish to view right in front of the house.

Super helpful caretakers

  • 5 of 5

I had a wonderful time with my son at this house. Beach was fantastic and clean. The room was comfortable. Xcalak was just the right amount of quiet. Do yourself a favor and get out to dive the banco chinchorro, gorgeous!! The caretakers helped us out of a pickle when the mahahual gas station shut down for a week.

We'll be back!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful house on a beautiful beach! My family of 7 rented the upper unit, plus one of the lower units for 5 days. House was well stocked with purified water, toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, clean towels, etc. We shopped in Playa del Carmen (or Tulum would have worked)for all of our food and drinks. We were so well supplied that we didn't even venture into Xcalak, but we could have tried a restaurant there - nothing fancy! We also enjoyed the delivery of the fruit truck a couple of times. We even were able to buy fresh meat off the truck. We came for the ocean, and it didn't disappoint. The beach in front of the house is kept clean and raked and is a great place to enjoy in one of the many lounge chairs. The ocean is very shallow - not a great place to just go for a swim. However, it would be very safe for young children, with water shoes on, to enjoy. We came specifically to snorkel the reef. Brought our own gear, swam out once or twice a day, and enjoyed the show. The rooftop is open to all guests (there are three different units that can be rented). The view is amazing - ocean to the east, and lagoon to the west. You can watch the sunrise or sunset over water. Rebecca and Conor, who are house-sitting for the owner and acting as caretakers, are wonderful! They were quick to greet us when we arrived, helped us unload, gave us space when we needed, but were there to chat and share stories when wanted. They let us know when the food truck was there, and even brought us home-made chips, guacamole, and salsas one evening. They are a treasure. I hope you get to meet them before they move on. This house would be a great property for a large family to rent and enjoy a vacation together. My one bit of advice, make sure you're clear on the directions for the house before you drive there, as you will lose cell service as you get close (the house does have decent internet however.) We struggled finding the beach road once we got to Xcalak. It was getting dark, we were exhausted and cranky after the long drive with 7 people in the van, and we took a wrong turn and almost made it to Belize (although we would have had to cross some water to get there!) And, speaking of cars, you definitely need to rent a car in order to be able to enjoy this house!
