Overview

About the property

Stand alone cottage in peaceful, private setting. Close to Village shops/cafes

If you’re a new ‘traveller’ with ‘Home Away/Bookabach’ and have not yet set up a profile to introduce yourself -please note, we’d like to know something about who is requesting to stay, including who is travelling with you and what brings you to the area.

Our property is a 5 min walk from Carterton's shops, cafes and restaurants, and only about 10 mins walk to the railway station. There’s a New World Supermarket, chemist, petrol station, laundromat, Library/Info Centre and numerous other shops and Carterton’s Event Centre.

A 10 min drive south will find you in lovely Greytown which has popular cafes, restaurants and boutique style shopping.

Masterton is 15 mins north. Wellington city is approx 1 & 1/2 hrs drive by car.

There are rivers for summer enjoyment and beaches further afield at Castlepoint (the walk to the lighthouse is a major attraction) and Riversdale (both over an hours drive away). Then there's the south coast's Palliser Bay with its rustic fishing village of Ngawi, Palliser Bay's iconic lighthouse which are both worth visiting. Not so far away - Martinborough and Gladstone's many wineries and cafes are a popular feature of this area. Pukaha Wildlife Centre (well worth a visit) is at Mt Bruce (20 mins north of Masterton). Tramping/hiking in the Mt Holdsworth (Tararua Ranges) area. Remutaka Cycle trail. Fell Museum at Featherston. Lake Wairarapa, Lake Onoke, Henley Lake Park (man made lake in Masterton -good to walk around) Queen Elizabeth Park and Aratoi museum in Masterton. Cobblestones museum and the popular Schoc Chocolate shop in Greytown. The Woodside Rail Trail is a pleasant 5 km walk or bike track from Greytown to the Woodside Train Station.

There are information brochures available, in the cottage and at our local Information Centre located on Holloway St at the Events Centre /library showing other attractions in the area.

About AlisonS

Allan and I are retired teachers. He with a background in building and secondary tech teaching and I was a Kindergarten teacher in Auckland and more recently in Nelson. We raised our family in West Auckland.

AlisonS purchased this cottage in 2016

Why AlisonS chose Carterton

The biggest draw card for us to purchase this property was the large section and established garden and the solid (concrete) construction and charm of the 1920's house. The section size enabled us to build the cottage at the back without impacting on the appearance of the property from the road.

What makes this cottage unique

We've built the cottage to a standard that we would appreciate if we were staying in it. Many modern conveniences including air con/heat pump and double glazing for summer and winter comfort. Lots of light - both natural and artificial. A garden setting with a private covered deck facing north for summer evening enjoyment. A reasonable sized bathroom with a great shower and gas water heating. We added a walk in wardrobe so guests bags and personal items are not in the way in the bedroom. There are bedding options for both the couch and the Queen sized bed so can control the weight of your bedding. Plenty of pillows and spare blankets.

The Cottage is situated at the back of the hosts house but an adequate distance away, so feels very private. It is the most lovely, clean and new unit with everything you could possibly want in a small cottage. Wonderful.

The cottage had everything you might need for a comfortable stay. The hosts have furnished and styled this place to suit the Laurel Cottage theme. When the landscaping is complete the outside will be as stunning as the inside. Enjoyed breakfast looking out over the lovely garden!
