There are so many things to do while holidaying in Picton in the Marlborough Sounds. I love to stroll up the Tirohanga track - a 2h 15 minute walk from the house and back as it offers magnificent views down the Queen Charlotte Sound or if I only have an hour I walk along to Bob's Bay and back. A walk out to the Snout and back will take you several hours. Walks to Esson's Valley take you into the hills to the dams that supply Pictons fresh water and offer the cool of the forest canopy on a hot day.
Boat cruises, dolphin swimming, seal swimming, scuba diving, kayaking or nature tours can be booked at the i-site across the road or at the offices along the foreshore.
Artisan shops in the High Street, restaurants, cafes and an Irish bar are so close to home it is not worth getting in the car.
The Ecoworld aquarium across the road will introduce you to the little blue penguins, mystical seahorse and an ancient tuatara, lizards, turtles and kakariki. Picton cinemas screen daily from the same location minutes walk from home.
Quad biking, jet skiing, jet boating and paintball are all available locally.
Mountain bikes can be hired from the waterfront but we do have two bikes in the garage you can use.
If you are not confident to explore the region yourself, guided walks, the Captain Cook Picton foreshore heritage walk or guided sea kayak trips are a good option.
For nature lovers the Kaipupu Point Wildlife Sanctuary is isolated from the mainland by a predator proof fence but can be visited by sea from a nearby wharf. I have caught the Beachcomber to Motuara Island bird sanctuary for the day. It is predator free home to the South Island Saddleback,Little Blue Penguin and the King Shag. Another recent 15 minute trip from Picton, a short walk from home took me to the wildlife sanctuary at Lochmara Bay where the Kunikuni pig let us scratch him and we were able to take kayaks out around the bay. An art gallery displayed and sold wonderful local paintings and jewellery.
