Why Denis Kuvacic chose Gata

Print Email

House is located in small Dalmatian town of Gata, where I was born and I am proud to be its inhabitant. It is a place of rich cultural heritage that dates back to early Christian basilica from 5th-6th century. On the remains of basilica year 1750 was built present Church of Saint Ceprijan. Gata was central town of ancient `Republic of Poljica` dating from year 1270-1946 where was written` Poljički Statut’ known as one of first’ laws of democracy ‘written year 1410-1440. (Vinodolski Law code written year 1288). Gata also was residence of `Knez` the Supreme Head of ` Democratic Republic of Poljica` . Each year on day of local patron `Saint Jure` democratic voting was taking place between twelve villages in region, `Knez` would be reviewed and elected . French general Marmont year 1708 adopted `Poljički Statut` as an example of the first written law of democracy and some of individual states have made parts of `Poljicki Statut` constitutional provisions in their constitutions, still today at University Sorbonnel in France `Poljički Statut`is taught as a subject as first Law of Democracy.

The Republic of Poljica was a small republic that was situated between the city of Split and the town of Omiš, following the river Cetina, stretching far into the hinterland. The republic enclosed all the little, but fertile fields in the picturesque mountainous area, from which Poljica got their name (Polja = Fields). The republic, governed by 12 towns, existed from the 12th century, thrived through 700 years of wealth and prosperity, effectively defending itself against the Ottoman Empire incursions for 400 years (even though the republic had no conscript army) and was eventually dissolved upon the arrival of Napoleon’s troops at the beginning of the 19th century. The statute of Poljica from the year 1400 shows us the laws and regulations of the time, which were incredibly advanced, not only for medieval times, but even in regards to modern states today.

What makes this villa unique

I The excellent view from the terrace, beatiful sunrise behind the mountains, made me fall in love with the property.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

I do believe this is the most comfortable, spacious holiday home we have ever stayed in. We were a party of 6 adults and two babies, so having ensuite bathrooms to all the bedrooms was very welcome. Lovely size pool; beautiful, quiet location, yet only a few kilometres from the interesting seaside town of Omis. Denis and Julija were super hosts; very helpful and friendly. Highly recommended!

Super ausgestattetes Haus in toller Lage

  • 5 of 5

Lovely Location, Lovely Hosts, Great Villa

  • 5 of 5

Approaching the villa along the narrow lanes was an adventure! Once the villa comes into view and you see the surroundings, the views! wow. Then you meet Julija and Denis in the villa and its not just like the pictures its even nicer!

Denis & Julija are wonderful hosts, who treat you to local/home made specialties on arrival and departure. They are on hand whenever you need them and always have a smile to share.

The villa is well equipped, spacious and very comfortable, I would suggest that the hosts have a little book of for the little questions guests invariably forget to ask on check-in, like how does the recycling work, where do we put our waste bags, what should we do with linens, what channels on the satellite are in what languages, where can we get BBQ briquettes etc.

Overall our party of 3 couples (no kids) had a wonderful time exploring and just relaxing by the pool and the weather was perfect, avg 26C for early June.

We don't want to go home!

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic villa in a beautiful location. Julija and Denis are very welcoming and made us feel instantly at home.

The villa is very modern and spacious, giving you everything you'd need for a relaxing holiday. Our young girls loved the pool and swings. We ate in most nights and used the BBQ a couple of nights which was good fun. There is a good mobile phone signal and the Villa has a good internet connection. The kitchen was stocked with a few essentials upon arrival which was appreciated.

Gata (the small village) is peaceful and quiet - everyone is very friendly and welcoming. The local shop is just down the road and is good for all the essentials - water, bread, ice-creams etc.

The local area is stunning and we filled our days with trips to nearby Omis, Makarska and Split. Omis is a lovely town with a stunning scenic backdrop - it has many nice restaurants and some great beaches (especially for the little ones). Makarska is about an hour away but the drive alone is worth the trip. A mid-sized harbour town with lots to do and a fantastic sweeping beach. Split was good but busy with tourists - we got there early and parked right on the harbour front. The old town is full of historic narrow streets filled with cafes and restaurants. We visited the palace and climbed the bell tower (not for the faint-hearted!).

We couldn't have wished for a better holiday and our only regret is that we didn't book another week!

Thank you again, Julija and Denis, for letting us stay in your wonderful villa.

Best villa we have visited!

  • 5 of 5

This is the best villa we have ever visited. The owners have thought of everything. It is clean, modern, comfortable and homely. The owners are really friendly, which makes a refreshing change and adds a personal touch. I would highly recommend this villa for groups and families. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area if you've hired a car and there is a restaurant and bar within walking distance of the villa when you don't want to drive.

Horse riding:

On the Dalmatia Trail you will ride on historically old tracks, Roman and Napoleon roads, old cattle ways and through the beautiful rural parts of Dalmatia with its Karst landscape. We will follow the River Cetina and Peruca lake straight to one of the sources of the River where clear and refreshing spring water rises from deep down the earth. In the summertime there are various opportunities for refresh yourself and your horse by swimming in lakes and rivers. We will also experience the local culture when passing through the small villages full of friendly and welcoming people.

This trail is suitable for intermediate to experienced riders who are used to spend long days on horseback and are also willing to fast gallop.

We usually start our ride after breakfast and will have short breaks and water stops before lunch. Over lunch breaks the horses are always turned away on the pasture land and set free to roll and graze and relax. And we too have a chance to chat or take a short nap!

Soparnik

Soparnik (plural: soparnici) is a usually savoury pie with a filling of swiss chard. Other names are soparnjak, zeljanik or uljenjak. It is the most famous speciality of the dalmatian region Poljica between Split and Omiš. The original season for the dish was the colder time of the year when older, sweeter chard was available.

Basically, it is a very simple dish made from common ingredients from the region: Chard with onions and parsley between two layers of simplest dough. Among the numerous local variations there are also sweet ones, for example with nuts, dried fruits or caramel.

History

The recipe is said to originate from the osmanii period (15th to 19th century). In the region it is said to be the prototype of the italian pizza, which the Romans brought to italy.Intermittently it was widespread as poor man's food and lenten food.Today it is used as a cultural trademark[3] and sold increasingly on markets and in restaurants and found on events and festivals. Since 2005 (2003?) there's a dedicated soparnik festival in the municipality of Dugi Rat.There is also a “Poljički soparnik” society (“Udruga ‘Poljički soparnik’”). Soparnik has been declared to be intangible cultural heritage of croatia by the croatian ministry of culture in cooperation with the socie
