A beautiful gite in an amazing setting
This gite is in a superb setting, quite high up near the village of Manses, with wonderful views of the Pyranees. Lorna, the owner, gave us a very friendly welcome and told us about local dog walks for our dog Max. The gite was enormous and as we were just a couple we only used the downstairs which had a beautiful bedroom and ensuite shower room. There were a further three bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs! The lounge and kitchen/dining room were huge and fully equipped. We had a great verandah where we spent most of our mornings and evenings. It was peaceful, hot, and with the views, who could ask for more.
We travelled quite a bit in the area as we are planning on retiring to France and wanted to get to know the area. I would recommend Mirepoix on Monday market day but get there early, it is also great for a drink/lunch/dinner etc. on any day of the week, sitting in the ancient square with all those fabulous buildings.
We travelled through the Pyrannees to Pas de la Casa in Andorra, a very scenic journey but the end result, the ski resort, looked quite drab and too commercialised, especially without snow!
We also had a very pleasant lunch at the cafe on Lac Montbel - the colour of the water being the bluest you have ever seen.
All in all I would recommend this gite without exception and the host Lorna, was very hospitable and welcoming.
Thanks again for a lovely stay.
Many thanks for taking the time to write such a lovely review. It is great to have feedback. So glad that you enjoyed your stay. I am always so pleased when I know that our guests have really enjoyed their holiday at Le Cazal.
Top class, really comfortable and peaceful.
Lorna and David have done an excellent job with Le Cazal. We are all agreed that it is the best gite holiday we have had in France. The property is of a very high standard, the views are spectacular and Lorna and David are always available should you need any help. Highly recommended and we wish them all the best.
We stayed at Le Cazal
Can I keep this a secret ... no, it would not be fair to Lorna and David Cannell. This place is a gem, we had a wonderful stay for 4 weeks in April, with the most hospitable and caring hosts.
Le Cazal is such a beautiful and authentic French Farm with the most lovely gites. The walks are fantastic, the gite was fantastic, the hosts fantastic; what else can we say, I would like to have stayed forever.
So pleased that you had such a wonderful holiday.
A perfect February holiday
A week at the beginning of February could have been dismal but we we had sunny days and clear crisp nights so it was perfect. The living area faces south so it was bright all day long because of the patio and french windows and warm too. We only needed the wood stove in the evenings and it kept us nice and cosy.
The property is attractive, comfortable, spacious, clean and well equipped. The views to the Pyrenees are just fantastic. It all looks great in the photos but in reality, it is even better!
Mirepoix is a lovely town and surprisingly lively for the time of year. The market on Monday is well worth a visit, if only to sit outside with a glass of wine and watch the world go by. Carcassonne is great, especially the castle. The drive to the Cathar castle at Queribus was as enjoyable as the castle itself. It was only a hop skip and jump from the Mediterranean so we drove there across country and back via the coast.
We managed a couple of days skiing at Ax-les Thermes. Great place, inexpensive - make sure you ask for insurance to be added to your ski pass.
We had a busy week but could just as easily stayed at Le Cazal enjoying the views with some good wine.
Le Cazal in winter is fantastic so we are planning to return for a summer stay too.
Thankyou for this lovely review. It was great to meet you all. Maybe in the summer you will be able to do some of the things you didn't have time for this trip! (Little Yellow Train etc)
Vraimemt parfait, on espère revenir bientôt!
The Mediterranean beaches are within reach for a day out. Narbonne is approximately 90 minutes by car and offers beautiful sandy beaches with a calm sea. There are also opportunities for beach and sea fishing.
Some nearby lakes offer beaches, swimming and watersports. The nearest to us is the lovely Lac Montbel(20 miles), Puivert(25 miles), Lac de la Cavayere at Carcassonne(40 miles) and the Lac de Mondely(30 miles)
The nearest airports are Carcassonne, 35 miles - 50 minutes, and Toulouse Blagnac, 60 miles - 70 minutes. Car hire is recommended although bicycle hire can be arranged once at Le Cazal.
The village of Manses is a 5 minute stroll. Mirepoix, an ancient bastide town with its famous 'couverts' and market is 5 miles distant. Carcassonne offers a variety of shops and markets and of course the famous castle or cité is a 50 minute car ride. Montsegur, famed Cathar town and castle is 50 minutes to the south. The climb up to the castle is well worth the effort as the views on a clear day are spectacular.
You may never have stumbled upon Ariège-Pyrénées; most people haven't. It's a hidden gem: the ‘other’ south of France: a rural and sparsely populated area of outstanding natural beauty, laid back charm and good living. Explore green foothills and majestic Pyrenean peaks; potter round local markets and medieval towns; walk on peaceful paths and drive on quiet roads; marvel at the sheer variety of flora and fauna and stand and stare at breathtaking views. The Ariège is just about as far south as you can go and still be in France - we’re farther south than Nice - and is bordered by Spain and Andorra. There are just six main towns, the largest of which has a population of just over 15,000, many small villages and hamlets, and some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country. The Pyrenees are rarely out of sight and form a stunning backdrop all over the department, with the highest peaks rising to around 3000 metres. Medieval cités, Cathar castles, lovely Romanesque churches and authentic bastide towns and villages are all on your doorstep. There are lots of prehistoric sites, including some of the most extensive caves in Europe. You can climb or ski in the high mountains, go canoeing, gliding or paragliding, spend a couple of hours in a thermal spa or dance the night away at one of our many festivals. And it’s all totally unspoilt, totally uncommercial. Okay, we’re biased … but this really is a magical area!
Ariège is perfect for walking with well marked paths at all levels including the St Jacques de Compostelle pilgrim path,la voie piemont GR78, which passes just behind Le Cazal. Within an easy walk through beautiful countryside with panoramic views, is the Merovingian Necropolis (5-8 century), at Teilhet. A Voie Verte (green road) has been created from an old railway track and now links Mirepoix with Lavelanet and offers easy walking or cycling with lovely views.
