PEKES is a tile hung TUDOR MANOR HOUSE on three floors with oak-beamed ceilings, panelled rooms, and a croquet lawn. It is situated in unspoilt countryside up a drive of about 350 yards. This makes it peaceful and secluded and safe from the road.
At the back it looks out over a large lawn approx: the size of 2 tennis courts. The lawn badminton court is marked out at the near end of the lawn. The croquet is set up at the far end. This lawn is exclusively for the use of visitors to Pekes. The hard tennis court is out of sight and shared with other visitors.
There are 8 double bedrooms, large kitchen and kitchen annexe, 4 bathrooms (2 with bath, WC and basin, 2 with modern shower, WC and basin) and 3 reception rooms. There is full oil-fired central heating. Eggs and vegetables are usually available from the gardener. Cooking, cleaning and nanny help is usually available on request.
My kids (6+7) and I wanted a few days away from normal life - and that's exactly what we found here.
We stayed in The Wing, which is a quirky mix of beautiful old furniture and 70s pieces, like my wonderfully comfy fold-out-of-the-wall bed! It was all sparkling clean. The kitchen was modern and well equipped. Loads of hot water. The kids shared the one bedroom, and after they were asleep each night, worn out with fresh air, I pottered round the enormous lounge/dining room reading the collection of old books and looking through pictures of Pekes in the olden days. There was a big TV with freeview, a video and a DVD player, but I felt too peaceful to let modern life intrude!
The grounds were amazing - topiary ducks, a secret walled garden, chickens, ponies, room to fly a kite and play badminton, tennis courts, table tennis, and of course the gorgeous pool, clean and very warm, surrounded by lovely plants. I could sit and watch from the side, reading a magazine, not like cparcs where I have to get in and shiver!
We ate out every lunchtime at some lovely local eateries (Route 22 on the A22 south of Hailsham is v good USA diner), but I couldn't persuade the kids to go to any other amusement parks, they just wanted to play at Pekes.
It's certainly not a 5 star boutique place, but quintessentially English, slightly eccentric, and wonderful for that. Many thanks.
We rented the whole of Pekes for our wedding weekend at the end of May. We had the whole wedding party plus our family staying and it really was the most incredible weekend. The grounds are stunning, the houses really lovely and the staff and Eva are all delightful and helpful. There are also lots of garden games that can be put out on the main lawn (including croquet and badminton) and we had a brilliant family weekend creating beautiful memories that will last and last. We all loved it so much that, one month later, we're already talking about coming back again next year!
We stayed at the Oast House which is part of the Pekes Manor estate. A beautiful, rustic, quintessentially English estate in the South of England, close to the coast and a wealth of historical houses and attractions. Its a wonderful place. A little tumble down, but very comfortable. The private jacuzzi is a real plus, as is the indoor pool (for all weather fun). Very peaceful. Great for children to run around without feeling concerned for their safety. Gardens are immaculately kept. Owner extremely lovely to deal with. I can imagine this is a wonderful place for multiple families if you wanted to rent out a few properties at the same time. We just stayed at the Oast House, which was large enough for 10 of us (5 kids). Would return I think. Could do with a few more obvious inclusions in the price, not least linens, internet and towels. Pool could be better heated too. Other than that, weather was wonderful and the experience, just lovely.
Pekes Manor is in the most beautiful setting with loads of activities to keep you busy and entertained for the entire stay for all. It slept and fed all 18 of us very comfortably and had everything we needed available to us! we were lucky to have good weather so the huge gardens gave us plenty of space for some cricket and Barbecue activities, and the Pool, Hot tub and sauna were enjoyed by all!
The Owner Eva was very hospitable and was on hand to help with any questions before hand and during our stay.
We could not have asked more for a venue to hold our reunion and i will certainly be returning.
We booked the Manor House for a weekend with 20 girls and it was the perfect stay. The House lived up to all the details Eva had given plus more. The house is full to the brim with character. The grounds are absolutely stunning and well provided for - there are games galore to keep both adults and children entertained. The swimming pool is clean and a decent size for the group. The rooms were quirky, well kept and clean. I would 100% recommend this place to friends and family.
We stayed here for a weekend with 7 other couples and kids and had a fabulous time. The house is is a fantastic place to share a weekend with friends. Don't be fooled by the website photos as it's far better in the flesh.
We also made full use of the amazing grounds, indoor pool, table-tennis, jacuzzi and sauna.
I sincerely hope it won't be too long until we go back again. Added bonus was that bearing in mind how old this place is, it was actually lovely and warm.
So, all in all a winner!
