La Maison au Puits is literally surrounded by fields filled with Sunflowers, Wheat, Barley or Maize in summer, and this tranquil part of rural France offers an ideal retreat for those wishing to escape the stress of modern urban living, and experience life in the French countryside.
The exact age of the house is not known, but the building is known to be about 200 years old and was used prior to it's renovation as accommodation for Chickens and Ducks. Built in the traditional French "Longiére" style of stonework walls, granite cornerstones, granite window and door surrounds, under a pitched tiled roof, the house retains many of it's original features and has been sympathetically restored.
This solitary, traditionally furnished house consists of a tastefully decorated Lounge, a fully equipped, modern Kitchen/Dining room, a Shower room/Toilet and Utility room on the ground floor, and a main Bedroom with King size bed and balcony, a twin Bedroom and Bathroom / Toilet on the first floor, accessed by a staircase bordered by the original Oak beams of the roof structure.
A private, attractive, south facing garden offers a perfect area to unwind outdoors and enjoy the hot summer climate of central France. With far reaching, unobstructed views to the West over fields and woodland, of the type immortalised by the famous French novelist George Sand, who lived in the region and loved it so much.
The garden also has a patio area which offers some welcome shade during the hottest part of the day or to enjoy the spectacular evening sunsets from. The garden has a table with parasol to seat six and a small bistro set. Sun-loungers are also available to use.
The cottage is in close proximity to a working farm, which produces excellent traditional "Berrichonne" cheeses. These can be bought at a fraction of Supermarket prices in the farm shop, a short stroll away, down a lane, which on a busy day will have less than 4 cars use. The shop also sells fresh milk, crème fraiche and butter on a daily basis.
Carp fishing (up to approximately 30lb) is available on the very quiet, local pond (100 yds from the house). Day tickets can be purchased from the owner of a nearby Gite.
The area is a haven for birdlife and wildlife, with deer, hares and foxes regular visitors to the fields at the rear of the house and these can be watched from the kitchen window. Binoculars are available to borrow.
Guests will be provided with towels and bedlinen and a complimentary bottle of wine upon arrival.
An information folder containing emergency telephone numbers, appliance operating instructions and tourist information will also be available.
For wine lovers the vineyards of the Chateaumeillant Appellation are approximately 15km to the North of La Maison au Puits and the well known town of Sancerre is approximately 120km to the north.
The region offers some superb Restaurants and Auberges as well as Chateaux, Golf, Fishing, Walking, Cycling, Kayaking and Horse riding.
With easy access to Chateauroux, Bourges, Montlucon and Clermont Ferrand, the larger towns and cities are between an hour to an hour and a half away.
It was a conscious decision not to have WIFI connected to the house.
This allows families to spend quality time together and avoid the distractions of social media, the internet and constant emails.
This won't suit those who can't live without social media, but if you visit, you will feel as though you have travelled back to a time where people actually chatted to each other and connected with nature.
Whatever your interests though, the region offers something for everyone and more details can be found on our site.
