Spacious with a great garden but the interior is unclean and the property is shabby and damp.

  • 1 of 5

The weather was kind so we had a good holiday but ... whilst we do understand that this is an old building and that the owners have made efforts to improve the bedrooms and bathrooms, it is nevertheless quite shabby. The damp and resulting smell of mustiness was overwhelming on arrival and the adults found it difficult to sleep for the first couple of nights. We did buy lots of air fresheners and opened the windows as much as possible which helped after a while but our towels, even when dried outside, became damp overnight when put away inside. Even our spare, unworn clothes had to be washed when we got home to remove the musty smell of the house. We couldn’t leave the windows open overnight because local cats came in. It may be that the cleaners simply aren't doing a decent job and letting the owners down. The collection of dust, grime and cobwebs in the corners, behind curtains and underneath the furniture in particular was extreme, so we moved the sofas and vacuumed beneath to prevent our grandchildren touching it when toys rolled under. Light switches were filthy, the area next to the fridge was a collection of dust and dirt; there were pockets of dirt behind curtains and also very grimy window frames when opened; a very dirty oven and door – the list could go on. This property has lots of space and bedrooms, but the kitchen is a bit small for catering for a group of 10. Overall it needs a deep clean, a proper airing and the damp sorting out.

Owner's Response: I am sorry that you felt so disappointed with the farmhouse. Our previous guests were very happy, as testified in their review, and we had no trouble with any of our other summer visitors. The charm of the house is its rusticity, and perhaps this character is not to everyone's taste... Given the strength of your criticisms and the fact that you must know how this type of review impacts on a listing, I will refrain from further comments and hope that other potential visitors will make their own decisions. It had rained heavily before your visit. Perhaps that played a part..

Fabulous French Farmhouse

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time here in Bois Jean. The farmhouse inside is much better than the photos. The rooms are large and well decorated, with a lovely peaceful feel to them.

We were welcomed with milk and bread which was a nice touch.

We took our own bedding and beach towels but realised when we arrived that there were no bath towels available at the gite. I would recommend paying the extra for the bedding for that reason as it was a bit of a faff making all the beds up when we arrived and having to use the beach towels as bath towels!

We found the garden huge with plenty of room to play ball games etc.

The wifi was spot on and there are plenty of games to play and DVDs to watch.

Bois Jean is perfectly situated for visiting the Battle of the Somme sites and is also close to the beach, only 20-30 minutes drive. The box by the front door with information leaflets in is a really good idea and came in very handy.

The nearest Boulangerie is in Wailly-Beaucamp which is a short drive away and has wonderful breads and cakes.

Montreuil is also a fabulous place to visit, lovely bars restaurants and coffee shops.

The front of the property could do with a little 'tlc' as the weeds had been sprayed with weed killer but not removed which gave it a bit of a shabby look as we drove up, and the grass needed cutting around the back.

However, I would return here for a visit and will definately recommend this beautiful property to my friends and family.

Lovely house

  • 4 of 5

We spent 5 days around new year and had a great time. The house was spacious, very clean and fully equiped. It had 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, complete kitchen with all you would need and a big and fenced garden. We loved the fire place. In 15 mins you are at the sea. Everything went smooth due to the clear instructions sent by email. The owners left us bread and a bottle of wine at arrival, very kind. We will certainly come back!
