Overview

About the property

Luxurious Rural Farmhouse with an Infinity Pool , sleeps 8 , 4 bed and 3 bath

Quinta do Anjo is a luxurious farmhouse , with a spectacular 12 * 6 metre infinity pool , set in 7 hectares of farmland overlooking the Algarve countryside set amidst centenary olive trees, carob and orange groves. This spacious farmhouse is very well equipped, with a modern open plan living area, four spacious bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone. Accommodating 8, both the outside space and the large downstairs living area have been designed so that there are quiet corners for everyone. There are few places in the Iberian Peninsula where you can be on a glorious beach for lunch and then relax in the pool before the sun sets in a rural paradise after only a short drive.

Quinta do Anjo breathes the simplest rural living yet with the luxury of modern comfort.

Before you arrive at Quinta do Anjo you will pass the 'goatherds' house where Constantina, his wife, can provide fresh goat's cheese and milk. You will see the farmhouse to the left of the driveway sitting comfortably on what appear to be a sea of trees.

On opening the front door, you will be greeted with a large, air conditioned, open plan living area. This space includes a dining area, a living area, several relaxing day beds and a sofa that can seat well in excess of 8, set back from this is a large kitchen. There is broadband Internet, a music system and CD's, TV, a selection of DVD's and a games chest. The large dining table, seating eight, is just off the open planned kitchen, where everyone can enjoy being together in style and simplicity. The designer Kitchen is a cooks delight, with a fabulous 6-hob stove, 2 dishwashers and 2 fridges (all good quality Smeg appliances). This is a perfect space for large family events and caters for all ages. Also on the ground floor is a guest cloakroom. The downstairs master bedroom is situated at the far end of the living area and has an en-suite bathroom, ample cupboard space and a large desk and day bed. The bathroom has a contemporary bath and separate walk in shower. The master bedroom also has its own private access to the outside terrace with views towards the pool. This is an excellent room for the elderly who may not want to use stairs.

Climbing the curved staircase, you will find yourself on the landing and 2 further twin bedrooms, which share a separate shower room. Both rooms have a working desk, bedside tables and cupboard space. One looks north over the hills and catches the evening sun, the other south over the pool and the surrounding valley. A laundry room with dryer and washing machine is also located on the landing. The upstairs master bedroom is off the landing and faces west, and enjoys wonderful sunsets. It also has direct and private access to a very large terrace. Double aspect windows and double doors lead out onto the terrace, which also has a shaded double day bed and stairs that lead down to the garden. The bathroom has 2 hand basins, a contemporary bath and walk in shower. In a separate walk in alcove are also located 2 cupboards. This upstairs master bedroom is very large and private from the rest of the house. All bedrooms have stunning views over the surrounding countryside , Air Conditioning and underfloor heating.

Outside, Quinta do Anjo caters for all ages and tastes and there is space for everyone. There are 3 main terraces downstairs .The large front terrace is covered in cane shading and offers welcome respite from the sun. It opens out from the main living area and can also be accessed from the downstairs master bedroom. There is a King sized daybed (which is excellent for reading a book or a quiet siesta in the afternoon) and an area that can be used as an external eating area and is wonderful for a lazy family lunch. It has views south and is bathed in moonlight during the summer. The property provides 2 teak tables with chairs for outside meals, there are also separate tables for the junior members of the party. There is also a more protected terrace, part of the outside porch and with traditional cane insulation , which welcomes you before you approach the front door. This terrace has wonderful views down towards the valley and receives less sunlight and is ideal for breakfast, or can even be used as the junior dining room. It can seat 8 comfortably with deep cushions on the purpose made “ sofa “ supplemented by teak chairs. There is also a 'sun' terrace, at the front of the house, which catches all the last rays of the evening sun. The upstairs terrace from the master bedroom has a similar perspective. There is a further stone terrace with shade in the garden which has wonderful views towards the pool and down into the valley below. It is an excellent spot for a cold beer in the evening as the sun slips below the hills behind you.

The pool is situated below the house, backed by a wall over 100 years old and which was part of the original property. The pool has a terrace with 8 high quality pool lounge chairs . It also has an ample area of cane shading , perfect for a book or a game of cards. The pool is set in absolute privacy with views over the surrounding country. The bee-eaters often dive down in the early afternoon for the water and the partridge scavenge around the edges at dawn. There are a further 8 garden chairs dotted around the terraces for reading ,a family get together before supper or an evening drink as the sun sets.

Next to the house the pigsty has been converted into a Barbeque area, with built in sink, working area and electricity. This is a wonderful spot for a glass of cool Vinho Verde whilst the charcoal embers cook your fish. We are very concerned over fires in the summer so request that the utmost care is taken when using the Barbeque (charcoal only).

Utensils and grills are provided.

The interior of the house is decorated in an eclectic manner and style. The predominant tones are white fabric and wooden furniture, with many antiques from the Swat Valley and Moroccan lamps . Books are available and there are plenty of DVD's (all ages) and music. Quinta do Anjo is magical at dusk.

Kitchenware is generally of simple design yet of excellent quality. Linen and pool towels are provided. All bed linen is good quality cotton.

Water is supplied by our own borehole, and is very pure. It is a constant 18 degrees centigrade all year round. Despite the fact that we are on top of an aquifer we would request that great care is taken over the use of water.

We treat Quinta do Anjo as our private haven and would invite you to enjoy it in a similar fashion.

We have an excellent support team at the property. Cleaning is provided once a week and the gardeners or pool maintenance team are generally around about once a week. The following is an approximate guide to the size of the house:

Main downstairs living area 90 metres sq

Kitchen 17 metres sq

Downstairs Master Bedroom 22 metres sq

Upstairs Master Bedroom 25 metres sq

Upstairs Twin Bedrooms 17 metres sq (each)

Main Terrace 50 metres sq

Pool Terrace 65 metres sq

Pool 72 metres sq

Bought as a ruin over 15 years ago Quinta do Anjo was rebuilt following the typical architecture and design of the region. The floors are made of local artisan red brick tiles; the walls are white with details of Algarve blue bordering the windows and doors. Some of the ceilings are also insulated with cane, typical of the region.

Wood has been used where possible to retain the rural feel of the house. However the interior is also designed for a large party and with a practical perspective. Modern appliances are used where appropriate.

In keeping with the rustic atmosphere surrounding the house is a very basic “garden” which we have tried to keep as environmentally friendly as possible. Fed by a natural aquifer lying 150 metres below ground all the vegetation is autochthonous. Rosemary, lavender and other herbs are located in clusters and add to the character of the terraces. All the other trees occur naturally and the carobs in particular are still of agricultural use, and are harvested in late August. There are a few near the house.

Quinta do Anjo is registered with the local County Council as an Alojamento Local (13740/ AL). It therefore has all the approved safety features for the license. The Property is also covered by Insurance.

About C. Wilson

We are a family of 4 adults , with a multi cultural background. We speak Portuguese , Spanish and English fluently. French if required.

C. Wilson purchased this farmhouse in 2000

Why C. Wilson chose Santo Estêvão

There are few places in the world that we have found that have the magic of this part of Portugal. Quinta do Anjo is a tranquil haven for us. We can spend hours without leaving the property , just enjoying the complete peace and tranquility of the rural setting. And yet only a few minutes away we can be walking for miles on an unspoilt sandy beach with clear and clean blue water. Between the beach and the olive trees are some of the most attractive towns of the Algarve. The weather is never too hot in the summer and in winter very mild.

In short this is a perfect spot to unwind , spend some wonderful days with the family or friends and give yourself a break.

We also appreciate the fact that we have Spain just 30 minutes away and Seville airport offers a very useful alternative to Faro.

We always come back wanting to explore the region in greater detail but never have managed to do so , Tavira and its surroundings , Quinta do Anjo and its comforts, never let us go !

What makes this farmhouse unique

Quinta do Anjo is quite unique in the Tavira region in the sense that it not only has a great deal of land , but is also surrounded by a Natural Ecological Reserve and an Agricultural Reserve. The setting is completely rural and despite being only 10 minutes from a major motorway you feel completely at peace. At night I think you can only see 2 lights ( besides the stars) as you wander round the house. Few properties in Tavira or Santa Catarina offer this sense of complete tranquility.

Its position, on top of a small hill , grants Quinta do Anjo lovely views down to the olive grove and river below , a cool breeze in summer and light both from the rising and the setting sun.

We made great efforts to reflect local crafts in the reconstruction of the ruin we had bought in 2000. All the basic materials and style reflect what existed as the ruin beforehand. We have also given the interior a sense of space and simplicity and tried to create its own character with a mix of Portugal , Africa and India. Each room has a special feature , whether it be the view, the space, the sun in the morning or the evening light or even the en suite bathrooms. We also love the local produce and enjoy cooking with room for 4 to move around comfortably. The kitchen is large by holiday home standards and even with a party of 8 is easy to manage.

Outside we have also made every effort to create space to enjoy the views and scenery. The infinity pool is a spectacular feature and provides endless hours of fun for all ages. Other terraces come in to being as the day progresses. The front porch , for breakfast , the large front terrace for a lazy lunch , the elevated terrace away in the garden ,a wonderful spot for an evening drink.

And as one of our children once said some time ago as they had a midnight swim you may even see Bagheera slipping through the branches of the trees.

Despite being in the midst of a rural landscape we have provided the Property with all the luxury you may require.

Stunning villa in a peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

My family (eight adults and a ten month old baby) had the most wonderful stay in this villa and we're keen to go back in the future.

The rural location meant we got an undisturbed week of peace and quiet, spending our days lounging by the pool and reading on the shaded terrace, overlooking the hills and countryside.

When we felt like being more active, Tavira was only a 15 minute drive away. We spent an afternoon there, wandering along the river and stopping for a nice, long lunch near the Roman bridge.

As for the villa itself, Crispin and his family have wonderful taste! The rooms are all really good sizes and the two ensuites were beautiful (Mum was very happy!). At night, the terrace off the master bedroom upstairs allowed for some great star gazing (something we don't get to do with the bright lights in London).

The kitchen was brilliantly equipped and allowed for us to easily cook and serve up big meals for all. The two dishwashers in particular came in handy.

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this villa and Crispin as a host.

On reviendra sûrement

Splendide propriété dans un hâvre de paix

  • 5 of 5

A faire! Nous recommandons ce bien les yeux fermés.

Beautiful house, very well equipped, quiet

  • 5 of 5

We've enjoyed our stay in the farmhouse very much. We (2 families with 4 children) were very lucky with the weather, only sun! But even if the weather is not so fine, the house has a very nice living / dining room, huge enough for so many people and with very nice interior. We loved the pool (no nasty chlorine), the various nice places around the house to sit and relax and the well equipped kitchen (2 dishwashers, huge gas cooker...) We often went to Tavira market to get fresh fruits, meat, fish and enjoyed preparing and of course eating the mediterranian meals.

The beaches around are a perfect dream, although it takes a little time to get to there (first, with the car, then you often have to go 5-10 minutes by boat or with a little train to cross the Ria Formosa reservate).

The owner is very friendly and gave lots of information to us. 5 stars! It was really gorgeous. Thank you!

Great place . as usual...

Great stay . This was the 4th time we went there and we really love it

The house itself , in the mountain , quiet and so close to Tavira city and the beaches, with his swimming pool is perfect.

The situation , jus after a farm with goats, dogs, and hens is really great for us , coming from Paris , mainly this year

See you next year for the 5th time , for sure !

  • 4 of 5

Quinta do Anjo is set in idyllic rural surroundings and yet is only a 20-minute drive from the beach and 5 minutes from the nearest village. Surrounded by agricultural land and situated at the end of a dirt track you are immersed in a very rustic part of the Algarve. The only sign of the goatherd who lives down the track are the bells that drift across the valley from his goats as they graze. You are unlikely to be disturbed by anything other than the wildlife that inhabits the area. In the summer the bee-eaters arrive, and accompany the Golden Orioles whose melodious call can be heard during the day. Quinta do Anjo has over 7 hectares of land which includes an olive grove, carobs and almond trees and the typical Algarve Berrocal . The land rises above the house to the North West and drifts down to the valley and the river (dry in the summer) to the South East. There are no barriers between the property and the surrounding countryside.

Activities that can be done directly from the house include walking and bird watching. However many just opt to lie back on the day beds and read a book, lounge by the pool or discuss the next days adventure in the shade of the terraces.

A few minutes drive away Tennis can be booked at Heredade de Corte (a Turismo Rural set in a nature reserve) and at Retiro dos Bispos that has just been renovated and also offers a Spa and other recreational activities. Both offer Restaurants and are good alternatives after a long day at the beach.

The nearest villages, Santa Catarina and Santo Estevao both have small super markets and a chemist. They are very typical rural villages of the Eastern Algarve and do not offer much excitement except for the fortnightly village markets which provide wonderful opportunities to buy local produce and crafts. Both also have Churches. A short 5-minute drive will take you to either.

Inland from Quinta do Anjo is the Serra do Caldeirao, a small range of hills that will take you north to the Alentejo. Very sparsely populated and peppered with cork forests on the north facing slopes, this is deepest rural Portugal that has not changed for decades. It is hot in the summer in the hills, but a blaze of colour in the spring and wonderful walking country. Wild boar, eagles and civet cats can be seen in the more remote valleys.

The main activities that can be found in the Eastern Algarve are all based along the coast. Most of the towns are a few minutes inland and the nearest can be reached within 15 minutes from the property. This region has been spared the transformation of the Western Algarve around Faro and still provides an unspoilt environment in which to recharge your batteries!

The coast is part of the Ria Formosa Natura Reserve that stretches for almost 60 kilometres from Manta Rota (a few kilometres from Spain) to Faro. The beach is an endless expanse of sand, which crystalline water and backed by salt marshes and lagoons. Most of the beaches can be reached by small boat or even an old train and have excellent facilities in the form of Restaurants and some recreational activity such as Sailing and Wind Surfing. Barrill is particularly good for a family outing. Situated a few kilometres from the beaches behind the lagoons are the towns of Tavira , Olhao and Cacela Velha. All of these are steeped in character and offer entertainment in the summer months. The village centres are charming, with many old Churches (often with concerts in the summer) and typical Portuguese architecture ( Tavira has a Roman Bridge and is recognized as one of the most attractive towns in the Algarve). Good restaurants, Bars and local crafts are all available and in the summer the area also provides many Festivals (Seafood at Olhao, Film and Theatre in Tavira , Poetry and a Moorish Festival at Cacela Velha ) as well as the local crafts and food markets.

For those with an athletic disposition Golf and Riding are also available near Tavira , with some exceptional Golf courses at Cacela Velha and Villa Real de Santo Antonio. The Jack Nicklaus designed course at Monte Rei is set to become one of Europe's premier Golf venues and the courses at Quinta da Cima and Quinta da Ria (at Cacela Velha ) are perched above the beach and lagoon and offer wonderful views.

More exotic sports like deep sea fishing will require a longer excursion to the area west of Faro (Quinta do Lago , Vilamoura) which is only a 45 minute drive away . The area also provides more sophisticated entertainment from 5* Spas to Discotheques.

Further afield, the area around Sagres is spectacular with empty beaches and the wild Atlantic, and very good seafood.

Needless to say the immediate vicinity around Tavira has plenty on offer and the town itself has a number of big supermarkets, a wide variety of shops, Restaurants, a Hospital and Cinema. Both Tavira and Olhao have excellent markets, with a variety of seafood, fruits, vegetables and local crafts.

Seville airport is also only 90 minutes away.
