Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Roccalbegna - Podere Sant'Angelo

One bedroom Tuscan holiday cottages, private garden and terrace, great views,Wi-Fi

Great traditional food, fantastic wines, beautiful countryside, long hot summer days. Hill top villages, churches hiding renaissance frescoes and ceramics ........ sweeping uncrowded beaches with a beautifully clean sea ..... all the cliches about Tuscany are here and they're all true - especially here in Maremma, the unspoilt southern part of the region. South of Siena, Maremma runs down to the border with Lazio. This is a land of Etruscan remains, gently rolling hills, untouched medieval villages with a pace of life that can take you back 50 years if not more.

Podere Sant'Angelo is a great place to unwind, escape the stresses and strains of urban life and soak up the tranquility of the beautiful Tuscan countryside.

Podere Sant'Angelo's holiday homes: Zolferate, Capitorio and Albegna are tastefully furnished and offer comfortable indoor and outdoor living.

Each holiday home comprises:

• large bedroom with double bed and fold down single

• bathroom with walk-in shower, toilet facilities and hairdryer

• large living room with traditional kitchen corner

A baby cot and high chair are also available.

Each self-catering accommodation has access to a private terrace for 'al fresco' dining and star watching.

Sun loungers are available for relaxing in the large tended garden full of aromatic mediterranean plants.

Fast Wi-Fi (6Mbps via satellite) is available throughout all three holiday homes.

Each holiday home has access to its own barbecue facilities.

The holiday cottages can be booked individually or together for larger groups.

The English owner is on hand to help, advise and make your stay as pleasant as possible.

Podere Sant’Angelo is registered with the Tuscan Regional Tourist Board.

About Graham Bradford

I grew up in the north west of England. After university studies in Scotland I left the UK to live and work in many different countries.

I've been enjoying life here at Podere Sant'Angelo now for over ten years and enjoy sharing my experiences of Maremma, where to eat and lovely places to visit, with guests.

Graham Bradford purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Graham Bradford chose Grosseto region

I holidayed in this relatively undiscovered part of Tuscany while living in Milan.

The Maremma has proved to be a great antidote to the stresses and strains of urban life.

I still enjoy the opportunities the location offers for gardening, sailing and hiking.

What makes this cottage unique

The great views from Podere Sant'Angelo make this a really special place. There's the view down to the coast at Porto Santo Stefano, in the other direction there's the oddly shaped Monte Labbro, in front of the house there are wonderful sunsets.

The black night sky with the milky way stretching over the house is still a wonder to see.

After enjoying urban life in several of the world's largest cities I now appreciate the close contact with nature offered by life here at Podere Sant'Angelo.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We've had a lovely two weeks putzing about the countryside and reading in the garden. Highly recommend the Etruscan remains around Sovana as well as a visit to the bookbinder in town.

Thank you so much for your hospitality, great advice - and for the lemons! We shall be recommending Zolferate to our friends and relations.

Tiffany & Eileen, Minneapolis / Oslo

Un accueil tres sympa et un endroit superbe qui font vite oublier le chemin rempli de poussiere (!) et nous plongent dans le charme de la Toscane.

Merci pour cet agreable sejour,

Etienne et Alain, Lyon, France

Kath and I have just had a really great week. Accommodation is very good, views superb and your advice and guidance great! The sausages from the local butcher are great - but try the 'porchetta' - it's really very good. Food has been excellent from the local restaurants as has the wine! Would recommend a trip to Siena - well worth the visit.

A really great time, Ian and Kathleen, UK

Ruhe und Erholung in der Natur

  • 5 of 5

Vielen Dank an Graham

Perfect place

  • 5 of 5

The property is described accurately. The location is just great if you are looking for Tuscan culture, food, great vines as Brunellos, Montepulcianos, Morellino di Scansano and last but not least (our favorite) from Villa Patricia Vinery (Monte Cucco DOC), the very nice and calm southern landscape and non vegeterian "Bistecca fiorentina" from the local butcher in Rocalbegna as I do.

Graham is a very interesting and nice host. He is service oriented and he is here for you if you need him and, he let you alone if you want to be for yourself.

Here is a list of what you can do or where you can eat in and around Roccalbegna.

- Go to Roccalbegna, to the sea, to Monte Labro (by bicycle or by foot), to Arcidosso, Santa Fiora, the Valle d'Orcia (a must see!) or to Pitigliano on romain traces and so on.

- Restaurant recommendations: (from low budget to more expensive): Barbecue in your Zolferate garden (gilthead seabreem form the golf of Grosseto) or the bistecca above or a sausage from the same butcher, la Grotta in Roccalbegna ($) (order home made pasta!), the Pizzeria in Cana ($-$$) with a very nice view over the valley, the Osteria del Castello in Arcidosso ($-$$), Silene in Pescina (Seggiano) ($$$) or the locanda da Caino in Montemerano ($$$$).

Zolferate Bellissimo

  • 5 of 5

The bumpy road leading to Podere Sant'Angelo was quickly forgotten when we arrived. Graham was waiting & graciously welcomed us to his lovely property. Our impression when entering our little cottage, Zolferate, was WOW! The pictures did not do it justice and the quality and beauty of our little "home" was beyond our expectations. Everything was new, modern, clean and very comfortable. As many have mentioned, the view was lovely and the grounds beautiful with many flowers, olive trees, rosemary, basil & other plants abound. We loved when we cooked in and could just walk outside our door to snip some fresh herbs. The area is so peaceful and quiet with only the occasional tinkling of the bells on the sheep grazing nearby to be heard.

Graham was overly helpful with his recommendations for sights and restaurants, all spot-on. He went over and beyond in his capacity of host when he drove us back to our car after a missed turn on our hike from Semproniano to Rochette di Fazio led us back to the cottage instead without our car.

We enjoyed Primo Colazione at the "Sport Bar" in Semproniano and the great little Alimentari next door for grocery shopping as well as the restaurant NoveCento. At Graham's suggestion we went to Cana to the Villa di Patrizia winery and had a wonderful tasting there. The hosts, Alessio & Patrizia, opened bottles for us to sample whatever we choose and of course we couldn't resist buying several to enjoy during our stay and to bring home. Graham also recommended Ristorante Da'Noi - a wonderful restaurant owned by Germans but staffed with local Italian chefs and probably the best food we have had in Italy.

We would definitely come back here if our travels bring us back to Tuscany - fall is a wonderful time to visit with great weather and not very crowded.

Thank you, Graham for a wonderful stay!

Sehr zu empfehlen!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Zolferate, great surrondings and a very clean and well designed house. We did many trips around in the south of Tuscany and to the awesome beaches. Our host Graham is great and very helpful. We reccomend this place for a Tuscan vaccation and will be happy to return. All the best/Carina and Tapio

This area boasts numerous nature reserves and is excellent for walking and mountain biking.

The picturesque village of Roccalbegna is a ten minute drive from Podere Sant'Angelo. It was built by the Republic of Siena as its southern outpost over 500 years ago and it's changed very little since then. It offers the following services: an exceptional trattoria/pizzeria, a bar, a butchers, a couple of well-stocked general grocers, a bank, a post office and a chemists. There's a mini-market on Monday mornings.

It's a 75 minute drive down to the coast at Castiglione della Pescaia and Marina di Grosseto where you'll find some of Italy’s cleanest beaches. The Etruscan remains of Sovana and Pitigliano are 30 minutes away.

Monte Amiata's a great place to visit for walks through its enormous beech forests. The Val d'Orcia (as seen in numerous renaissance paintings), the wine towns of Montalcino (famous for its Brunello – some say the world’s best red wine) and Montepulciano are an hour’s drive away. It’s just a bit further to Siena with its amazing cathedral and beautiful main piazza ‘Il Campo’.

Day trips to Florence and Rome are possible.

Food & drink: Maremma’s known in Italy for its delicious traditional home-style cooking. Wild boar and other local game feature largely on the menus of local ‘trattorie’ and restaurants. Most of these are small, family run operations where fresh local ingredients and home made pasta are taken as ‘given’. Podere Sant'Angelo is located in the Montecucco wine region. This is nestled between the Morellino di Scansano and the Brunello di Montalcino regions. Villa Patrizia (Roccalbegna's winery) produces a great range of red, white and rose wines that can be enjoyed in local eateries and bought in local grocers. Il Fiorino, Roccalbegna's cheese factory, produces a range of internationally acclaimed cheeses and is well worth a visit.

Saturnia: The hot sulfurous waters of Saturnia have been famous since Etruscan times. You can enjoy the waters at the 'Terme' spa hotel which offers several pools, refreshment facilities and an extensive range of spa treatments A more popular option is the open air waterfall past the hotel, there’s free 24 hour access here, it’s great to visit in the early evening, even better if there’s a full moon. The springs are a 20 minute drive from Podere Sant’Angelo. An 18 hole course is open to the public at the Terme di Saturnia Hotel.

Nature reserves: The limestone cliffs of the WWF's Rocconi reserve are visible from Podere Sant’Angelo. This is one of the largest WWF reserves in Italy. It’s home to several rare species of birds. A small fee is charged for entry. At certain times of year night visits are possible. Visit the 'Parco faunistico di Monte Labbro' to see the original wildlife of the area including wolves.

The Etruscan villages: The Etruscans had a flourishing civilisation in central Italy well before the Roman Empire became supreme. Etruscan priests observed birds in flight to predict the future. Settlements were built on hill tops to afford a good view of the flight patterns of the local bird life. These Etruscan settlements developed into the picturesque hill top villages that are great fun to visit today. Pitigliano and Sorano both a 30 minute drive from Podere Sant’Angelo are the most spectacular local examples.

The coast: The southern Tuscan coastline offers some of the most pristine bathing in Italy. Castiglione della Pescaia has consistently been awarded the top 'clean beach' award by the EU. If you tire of the 'ombrellone' of Castiglione and Marina di Grosseto head for the beach in the 'Parco Naturale di Maremma' otherwise known as the ‘Parco dell’Ucellina’ for eight kilometres of golden sand without an 'ombrellone' in sight and few people even in August (just over an hour's drive away).
