Lovely place and great central location. Lots of information available in the cottage for the local area.
Wonderful stay in Hartington
We spent a lovely weekend at Knowl Cottage with our 15 year old nephew. There was excellent communication with Patrick, the owner who stopped by to say hello and has tons of info in the cottage about things to see and do. The cottage is very well appointed and located in the heart of the village., yet was very quiet. We could walk everywhere (Village Stores, tea shop, pub, farm shop cafe). It was very well equipped with comfy beds, great kitchen facilities, a lovely living room with plenty of wood for the fireplace. Highly recommended.
Lovely stone cottage, highly recommend.
We rented Knowl cottage over new year with two other couples and had a brilliant time. It is a lovely place to stay and and had been decorated for Christmas which made it especially welcoming along with the bottle of wine and Prosecco. Logs were plentiful for the fire which added to the festive atmosphere. Communication from owner Patrick was informative and useful parking is for cottage use only .Carol called in on our first evening to check all was well and also showed us one of the smaller cottages which were also available. Great service thank you and I’m sure we’ll be back. Good facilities available in Hartington too and nice places to walk or visit.
Fabulous cottage in a wonderful location.
In the heart is of Hartington
Beautiful cottage with original features sitting in the heart of Hartington. Walking from the door to either the great outdoors -spoilt for choice in terms of dales - or to the teashop which literally adjoins the cottage, or later to one of the two pubs within 100 steps almost of the front gate. Fabulous area - Haddon Hall is a real gem and very close by.
There is almost certainly more to do within 30 minutes drive of Hartington than anywhere in the UK, stately homes, market towns, attractive villages, the National Stone Centre (!) the absolutely superb National Tramway Museum, 8 heritage railways, the list is endless, hence there being 11 really well organised information folders in the cottage. But primarily we are of course in the heart of the White Peak Area of the Peak District (the area of rolling hills, valleys, dry stone walls and limestone villages, for which the Peak District is so well known - the Dark Peak is mainly uninhabited moorland), so absolutely superb for scenic driving, walking, hiking or cycling.
We are also within 3 miles of three former railway tracks, now cycle paths and walkways, of average 15 miles in length and there is a truly extensive network of quite lanes superb for cycling along, with Sustran Cycle Route 54 passing the cottage. The possibilies for walking are literally unlimited as almost every other field in this area has a footpath passing through but more specifically in the village there is a lovely walk starting, passing over a meadow before reaching after a few hundred yards the River Dove at Beresford Dale. Just down river, along an excellent solid river side path are other stretches of the River Dove known as Wolfscote Dale and then the most famous outside attraction of the who Peak District, namely Dovedale.
Alton Towers is less than 30 minutes drive away whilst the most visited stately home in the country, Chatsworth, is yet closer

About Patrick Skemp
We have live a mile away for over 20 years and in the Peak District for about 32 years. We are great enthusiasts of the area, knowing it really well, having carefully chosen (after a three year search!) our location, both the walking and the cycling here are after all absolutely superb. We like to greet guests personally so that we can deal not only with enquiries about the cottage but generally about the area, (but rest assured we are careful not to be too forceful!) We have in fact been running holiday cottages from the farm where we actually live for 20 years now, so we like to think we are pretty good at meeting guests expectations. Most weeks one or other set of our guests will comment (in addition favourably on the cottage) about our professional approach, which is after all driven by our determination to ensure that guests thoroughly enjoy both their stay in our various cottages and in the Peak District. In the name (of course) of market research, we visit the numerous inns, restaurants, chippies etc, (there are about 30 of these within 7 miles alone, plus various tea rooms) and are able to pass on our knowledge if requested to our guests.

Why Patrick Skemp chose Hartington
Superb location in the village, in the heart of it. Superb location in the Peak District. The village has numerous facilities for one of Hartington's size - there are after all only 130 houses. The cycling in the area is brilliant, the walking can not be beaten? There are an amazing number of stately homes, and other commercial attractions so close. Our cottages are extremely well run. But the cottage itself is just fab,(it is after all 5 star) it's a privilege to own a 700 year old property with so much character on display!
