Beautiful, charming home

  • 5 of 5

We had the most fabulous 5days here. The hosts were wonderful with fresh breads and croissants left in a basket every morning for us. The house was amazing! Rooms and beds so comfortable and clean. Kitchen has all amenities needed you do not have to worry for nothing. The size of the accommodation is huge! Bigger than we imagined, with games rooms everywhere the kids and adults could never be bored. It is really central to all we wanted to visit which included Disneyland 2 hour drive, arras British memorial 10min drive, Berck beach hour and a half and stunning! Lille an hour, Dunkirk hour and half and finally Calias Hour and half. To sum it up we had an amazing time visiting northern France and are absolutely going to be coming back. Merci Jean - Claude and Marie- Madeline x

Great location for visiting WW1 sights. Well equipped and comfortable. Welcoming hosts.

A very comfortable and well equipped gite. The welcome addition of a pool table downstairs and a separate games room with table tennis and darts. The owners were very welcoming and provided fresh croissants and bread most mornings. Ample parking and straightforward to find in the village. Local Boulangerie within walking distance a good supermarket 5 min drive away. Great location to visit Arras and Somme WW1 sights and in our 10 day stay we didn’t run out of places to go. There were bikes available and we went to Agny with the roads feeling safe. The drivers seem to give plenty of room to cyclists. Some lovely quiet lanes to explore. Driving around in our English car was easy once you get used to the priority from the right which crops up intermittently! We drove everywhere without incident although make sure that if you come from Calais you don’t miss the turn off to Arras as otherwise you’ll have a long diversion! English not as well spoken as in other areas but good at main tourist areas. Presents a good opportunity to practice though. In summary a very nice gite in a nice area and we would recommend certainly if you want to visit Somme WW1 sights. We found these to be excellent and very educational.

Rivière and Arras

  • 4 of 5

Very pleased with the property. The owners were very welcoming and provided a lot of local knowledge about the immediate and surrounding areas of Arras. Morning supplies of croissants and baguette were most appreciated. We enjoyed our stay very much and we recommend this gite.

You could not find more welcoming and helpful hosts than Jean Claude and Marie Madeleine.

We would highly recommend this property. It is in an excellent position for touring the battlefields (with a car, which we hired from nearby Arras). However, it was also a home away from home for those recovery days which are essential to every overseas trip. Our hosts were so accommodating and we were greeted every morning with a baguette and bag of croissants on the windowsill. They were also able to provide much local knowledge about the area. Our stay was one of the highlights of our trip and we would hope to return one day.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely stay in an area ideally suited for visiting any of the world war one battlefields. So much to do in this area. The hosts were so welcoming to us and the warm croissant's in the morning were very much appreciated. The house is really well stocked for essentials that we had all we needed.

River is a village of houses and castles in white stones in a wood where flows the Crinchon. From the cottage you will discover Arras, famous for its beautiful squares and belfry classified UNESCO heritage, its cathedral, its museum, its city, its citadel, its Boves, its Wellington quarries. A unique and unforgettable cultural heritage heritage witnessing the struggles that made the First World War in the region through such sites as the Notre-Dame-de-Lorette Necropolis, the Ring of Memory, the Vimy Canadian Memorial Park and his trenches. Do not forget the famous Louvre-Lens museum but also the museums of the fine arts of Arras or Lille. Your stay can be sporty near the nautical base of canoe kayak of Saint Laurent Blangy, the prestigious golf of Anzin Saint Aubin in 6 km or a cycle hike on the green way to 2 Km of the lodging, an old road way of secure iron that connects Arras to Doullens (bicycles available for free)

From the cottage you can go to Amiens, famous for its cathedral, its hortillonnages and Saint Leu district, but also to the huge sandy beaches of the North Sea, Le Touquet, Berck or Boulogne. Boulogne with its national center of the sea Nausicaa will enchant your children. You may prefer to visit Brugge, Ypres or Ghent in nearby Belgium.
