About Karin Smurthwaite

Dave and I were born and bred in the North East and have always felt an affiliation with the region. I spent most of my childhood holidays playing in rock pools along Embleton Bay outside my grandparents 'wooden bungalow' on the dunes

Karin Smurthwaite purchased this house in 2015

Why Karin Smurthwaite chose Wooler

We fell in love with Cuthbert's Retreat because of it's quiet location off the Market Place. It is situated along a pink graveled lane, situated in between 'Trotters Family Bakers' and the 'Essence of Beauty' tucked away to the side of the Bus Station. The view of the local church's clock face and tiled roofs is very comforting. Everything you need is literally on your doorstep. Wooler is a very welcoming and friendly place.

What makes this house unique

The peaceful location, stunning countryside and accessibility to the North East Coastline and Scottish Borders make Cuthbert's Retreat unique.

We stayed in Wooler for a family wedding and to meet with family the week after. The house was perfect. Beautifully clean and tidy. Comfortable and very well equipped. Easy to understand instructions to find and access the property. Very convenient Co-op with long opening hours.

Would absolutely recommend.

Owner's Response: Hi Sara, I am so pleased to hear you and your family enjoyed your stay at Cuthbert's Retreat. I find Wooler is a perfect place for a long weekend/ walking holiday- a walk to the top of Humbled on Hill to see the Cheviot Hills or a stroll along the sandy beach at Embelton Bay finished with a pub lunch. I would welcome you back anytime. Thanks again for taking the time to write this review. Best Wishes, Karin x

Wonderful ‘retreat’

  • 5 of 5

Cuthbert’s Retreat is an excellent self-catering house/cottage. The decor is very attractive, the accommodation is ideal and the facilities provide everything needed for a lovely stay. There were clear and helpful instructions about everything and a comprehensive folder of things to do and places to visit. The situation within the town of Wooler is so convenient and it is very easy to access shops and restaurants. I highly recommend this property.

Beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely little cottage with absolutely everything. Comfortable, clean and extremely well designed with just about everything you could ever need. Let's put it this way, pick it up and place it right on the sea front and we'd want to live in it! The village is literally on your doorstep. Fall out of the cottage and into a supermarket, restaurant, pub and countless little shops. A fabulous base from where we visited Bamburgh castle, Alnwick castle and gardens and loads of little villages along the coast. We even managed a trip on the train into Edinburgh. We have had a really good holiday and would visit again most definitely.

Quiet, well-appointed, great location

  • 5 of 5

2nd time there. The house is clean and has everything you need from a home-from-home. Handy for us for walking in the Cheviots, and golf at Goswick and Linden Hall. Co-op just round the corner for the unplanned indulgence! Highly recommended. We will definitely return, especially if we can be as lucky with the weather.

Superb holiday cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Cuthbert's Retreat is one of the nicest holiday cottages we have stayed in. As soon as we walked in, we noticed how clean and well presented the property was. The cottage is also very well equipped - there was nothing we needed that Karin and Dave hadn't thought of. Cuthbert's Retreat is a great base to explore both the coast and the Cheviots. We had a great week and will definitely be returning.

Points of Interest:

The market town of Wooler is an ideal base for a walking holiday. The town itself is a treasure trove of specialist shops, inns and cafes, including three antiques shops , a sweet shop, a newsagents, an outdoor shop, several bakeries, butchers, a COOP and gift shops. There is a local medical center, library and Tourist Information Office too.

Travelling north from Wooler, 9 miles along the A697 there are the picture-perfect villages of Ford and Etal nearby hold many attractions such as a working water mill, miniature railway, Etal Castle, Lady Waterford Hall and quaint tea shops. Just a few miles away and well worth a visit is Chillingham Castle ad Cattle. The castle is reputed for being the most haunted castle in the country.

On the doorstep of Cuthberts' Retreat is Cheviot View - a short walk for all ages and abilities (about 2.5 miles.) On a clear day you will have clear views of Cheviot and Hedgehope Hills.

A moderate walk (4 miles) towards the Humbleton Hill starts from the bus station. This circular walk will take you along the High Street and across fields towards the hamlet of Humbleton.

Linhope Spout in the Ingram Valley, 5 miles south of Wooler, there is a 60 foot (18m) chute of water which lands in a plunge pool 6 foot (2m) wide and 16 foot (5m) deep. This walk is approximately 5.5 miles. The Poacher's Rest at Hedgeley Services serve food and drink all day. The Plough Inn at Powburn also offers refreshments.

St Cuthberts; Cave is an overhanging rock outcrop of rock. It is reputed that the monks of Lindisfarne brought St. Cuthberts' body to this place in AD875 following Viking raids on the Island.

If you would rather visit the beautiful Northumberland coast, only a half hours drive away, you can pack up lunch and head towards Seahouses. You must remember your binoculars and hat, if you want to go puffin/grey seal spotting on the Farne Islands! Upon returning to Seahouses have a go on the one-arm bandits and finish the day off with fish and chips.

My favourite beach is Embleton Bay which has breath taking views of Dunstanburgh Castle. There are plenty of picnic spots especially when you get to Low Newton by the Sea. The Ship Inn is well worth a visit in the square.

Alnwick town and Gardens are only 17 miles away and offer plenty of attractions for a family day out.
