Enjoy life on the mighty Penobscot River...

The River House is available for weekly rental (Saturday to Saturday) or long-term lease. Nestled among the pines, this secluded property affords the peace and tranquility Maine is known for, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet close enough to catch your next flight in just minutes. The River House can be your home base while you take day trips to Acadia National Park to the south, Baxter State Park to the north, Campobello down east, and the popular coastal ports and mountain villages to the west. Or you can enjoy all that the greater Bangor/Brewer area has to offer: Waterfront Concerts, Cross Insurance Center for trade shows and concerts, Penobscot Theater for live theater, the Bangor Symphony, unique brew pubs, numerous parks with hiking trails and so much more. There is something for everyone!

This special property is:

• Just 3 miles from I-395/exit 4

• Only 15 minutes from Bangor International Airport

• Only 15 minutes to Eastern Maine Medical Center

• Only 10 minutes to Hollywood Casino & Waterfront Concerts

• A quick 20 minutes to Bucksport

• Just 25 minutes to the University of Maine

• And only 1 hour to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park

Stop, take a deep breath and relax. From the River House, one can enjoy quiet contemplative hours of bird watching, fishing, kayaking and canoeing, walking, swimming and more... all just steps from your front door. Aaaaahhhhh... the perfect getaway!

If you are looking for privacy, solitude and enjoy the outdoors, this is the place for you. From the deck you can watch the eagles soar... from the shore you can catch a striper... in the summer you can while away the hours watching the boats go by ... in the winter you can listen to the thunderous cracks of the ice flows in the river. Imagine painting, writing and creating with nature’s inspiration!

The 1-acre Orrington, Maine property boasts over 100’ of shoreline, with magnificent southerly views down the Penobscot. Bordered by a stream and seasonal pond, and filled with the fragrance of wildflowers and perennials, the wooded lot is a haven for wildlife. The home is reached by a well-maintained private dirt road.

The home was constructed in 1978 on the site of the Union River Ice Company, which was founded in 1882. The remains of the old ice house foundations and artifacts of the past can be found in and around the property.

The unique round design of the house is reflective of mid-century modern organic design... with a funky twist. Radiating from a central spiral staircase, the open concept and curved walls create a smooth continuous flow. The expansive wall of glass that encircles the main floor connects one with the outside ... as if perched in the treetops. The remarkable architectural design is in harmony with nature … its forest green wood siding blending into its surroundings.

The Main Floor amenities include:

• A fully equipped kitchen with breakfast area

• Expansive open Living, Dining, and Den areas... all with spectacular views, bamboo floors and exquisite wool rugs.

• Guest 1/2 Bath

• Wrap-around deck with screened-in entertainment area.

The Downstairs Sleeping Quarters include:

• Master Bedroom with private entrance, full bath, walk-in closet and an extra futon.

• 2 additional Bedrooms (1 full bed, 1 bunk bed)

• 3/4 Bath

• Utility Room with washer/dryer and outside entrance.

• Berber carpeting and fresh no-VOC paint in all the bedrooms.

New Fujitsu mini-split heat pump has been installed for year-round comfort… heating, cooling and humidity control. Electric baseboard heating is available for cooler weather.

All this could be yours...

About Susan Pate

Joe and I love to share all that Maine has to offer...from woods to water... and all the history it has to tell. The River House is on the site of the ice storage barn of the Union Ice Company that operated in the late 1800s. Our home is next door to the River House. It served as the office and bunk house for the ice company. By purchasing the River House, we were able to bring together the original pieces Union Ice Company once again. We are proud to show this little piece of Maine history to the discerning public. Tucked in at the the bottom of a winding dirt road, you will experience the Maine history, landscape, wildlife and state of mind that we have always treasured. Won't you join us for a relaxing respite?

Susan Pate purchased this house in 2007

Why Susan Pate chose Hampden

The property is special... with its history and its future. Remnants of the old ice house remain to explore. Sit on shore and wonder what took place in the river during the Penobscot Expedition 250 years ago? Or imagine what it was like to travel from Boston to Bangor on the steamship "Bangor" 100 years ago. The Penobscot is again a working river, with Cianbro using the port of Brewer to launch its steel frame modules to destinations in Texas... and cruise ships calling the port of Bangor home for the summer season.

What makes this house unique

The tranquil setting offers many opportunities to enjoy nature... from bird watching to fishing to kayaking and more... You'll always want to keep your camera handy, as you never know when the bald eagles will swoop by or the sturgeon may breach. Schools of alewives make their way upriver and a seal may visit. See the kingfishers dart along the water gathering their meals. The deer and fox follow the deer trail through the property. The frogs will serenade you in the evening... and the owl may herald the news of his latest catch. The serene surroundings lend themselves to reading, writing, painting and just thinking.

Magical place

  • 5 of 5

This place was perfect for our family gathering. We had 6 adults and although one couple was in bunk beds, it worked out.

Sue had left us wildflowers and fresh local green beans and cherry tomatoes. So wonderful!

Some of the kitchen appliances are showing wear, but we would certainly rent this house again.

Convenient for day trips to Acadia and Moose Head Lake, seaport drives, etc. Quiet and secluded but, convenient to stores and highway. Unique panoramic view of the river.

Scenic wonderland

  • 5 of 5

We have visited, Maine for the past five years during the holidays to see our grand kids and this I by far the best place we have stayed at. Extremely close to downtown Bangor, Mall, Theater and restaurants. Although winter time is not for everybody, we thoroughly enjoy it. There are plenty of activities for all ages.

Beautiful! We didn't want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at The River House a couple of weeks ago with my mom, sister, and six-year-old niece. We couldn’t have picked a nicer place for our vacation. The house is in town but tucked away off of a private road. While we were there, we felt as if we were in some faraway, secluded retreat; but the convenience of shopping, restaurants, tourist attractions etc. was only minutes away. The house itself is gorgeous; it is evident that a lot of love and care has gone into maintaining this home. And it is stocked with all of the essentials that you might need, plus some extras. We arrived to find fresh flowers and a basket with maple syrup and pancake mix on the island in the kitchen. Joe and Sue also supplied us with enough coffee to get us through the entire week. Also, the views from the house are amazing and the grounds made me just want to sit and relax and take in all of the beautiful scenery. One of my favorite parts of the whole trip was getting up early in the morning and having my coffee on a little bench that is tucked away at the end of one of the trails, overlooking the river. All in all, The River House was the highlight of our trip; and our only regret was that we did not spend more time there!

Secluded Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We visited Maine last year for the first time and loved it so much, we had to include it in our travel plans again this year. We decided to stay a little longer and bring our dog this time, and found this lovely gem in Orrington just south of Bangor. We were planning on using this as a home base from which to make day trips all over Maine, but we loved it so much, we only left once to go visit friends we made last year and twice to pick up groceries. On our last night here, we realized we hadn't been out to eat in the area, so we made a trip out for local fare. We also felt obligated...since we were there....to drive around Bangor and see what it was all about. That's a round-about way of saying we were so comfortable and satisfied with the house and its location along the river, that we never really got the itch to leave! Sue and Joe have thought of everything starting with all the fixings for pancakes our first morning there....which we managed to stretch out for our first three mornings! The house is completely round! It's really a ranch with a walk-out lower level. Kitchen, living, dining, and half bath upstairs and a wall of windows you wouldn't believe offering a panoramic view of the Penobscot River! We were mesmerized for hours. The lower level has THREE bedrooms (we only needed the one since it was just the two of us and our little dog) and two full baths AND a laundry room. There are a couple of seating areas up in the yard to watch the River tides roll in and out....or the bald eagles soar by or catch a fish! We got in the habit of sitting on the floating dock with our feet in the water at high tide. You can swim in the river or take out one of their kayaks available for use too. Sue and Joe were very accommodating and informative hosts. They have thought of everything. The kitchen is fully equipped, there are supplies for dogs and children. Soap, cleaning, and laundry supplies too. It has quality furniture and is beautifully and lovingly decorated. We felt right at home.
