Part of a lovely organic farm along the Chama River in Medanales, neighboring Abiquiu. The casita sleeps two comfortably in the bedroom with queen size bed and can accomodate an additional child or adult in the loft. The cozy casita has a small living/kitchen area, a full bathroom with Mexican tile, and a separate bedroom. The loft is accessed through the bedroom. There is a covered portal with a wood stove and comfortable furniture on the front of the casita overlooking the vineyard and fields.
The casita is screened from the main house and is oriented toward the gardens, fields and vineyard. The flagstone patio with private hot tub borders the acequia, the traditional irrigation canal for the farm, and looks out over farmland and down to the cottonwood trees bordering the river. A small bridge leads across the acequia into the vineyard and old orchard. Guests are invited to enjoy seasonal produce.
You can also walk the 1/2 mile down the lane along the farm fields and through the meadow land down to the Chama and enjoy the peacefulness of the river from the shaded campsite at the riverbank with screened gazebo, picnic table and chairs and firepit.
Nearby the farm, hiking and riding trails lead to BLM and National Forest lands offering a variety of landscapes to enjoy -- vast open mesas, arroyos to explore, pine forests, mountain vistas. Also nearby are the ruins of little-known old Indian settlements. Ojo Caliente with its fabled hot springs and spa facilities is a short drive from the farm.
Medanales is a small village with a Hispanic population and tradition just south of Abiquiu of Georgia O’Keeffe fame. The landscape varies from pastures to badlands, with the magic Cerro Pedernal and Sierra Negra on the horizon. Both can be climbed by the more experienced hiker.
Ghost Ranch and the wide and splendidly colored Piedra Lumbre basin are nearby, as is Plaza Blanca with its white sandstone formations. Espanola, the main town in this predominantly Hispanic area, is 15 minutes away. Quite a few interesting restaurants that serve local cuisine (with red or green chili!) can be found here.

My husband and I enjoyed our very brief stay at the Casita - very quiet, comfortable bed; loved the bathroom tiles and visits with the dogs. The owners are friendly and there if you need them. The bottle of wine was very welcome! Thank you!
Fantastic place! Wonderful and quiet. We escaped from the world for 3 days. We listened to the rain, frogs and coyotes. The casita was wonderfully furnished, comfortable and felt like a home away from home with no tv (that was the best part). We relaxed and came back to our world recharged and are ready missing the casita. Thank you Lisa and Djann, you were wonderful hosts and we enjoyed our visit with you. We will be planning another trip back and can't wait.
a perfect place to stay for spring break. we loved having a full kitchen to use. djann gave us fresh vegis and eggs to cook with our first night ( we were not prepared in terms of groceries). he and lisa are super nice folks. and their dogs! i think we would steal lola if we could...;-) the hot tub was perfect during the cool starry nights, too. we have recommended this great situation to family and friends too!
you can't beat Bode's for the best chile cheeseburger and great gift buying! Take a walk in plaza blanca for an amazing experience.
My wife and I just finished our second stay at River Farm. It is a comfortable place to stay on a working organic farm located on the Chama River. It is an easy drive into Santa Fe and Abiquiu. The accommodations are clean and comfortable but to us the real charm was our hosts, Lisa and D'jann. They are charming and willing to make themselves available to guests. While we were there we shared wine and a dinner together. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and plan to stop again some time.
We had a wonderful relaxing vacation at the Casita and didn't want to leave! My son who is 5 enjoyed picking apples and making apple sauce, collecting wood, toasting marshmallows over the night fire and walking all over the property. The view from the deck outside the casita is amazing and the whole energy of the farm is peaceful and relaxing. Ideal for a couple or family retreat. My husband and I enjoyed the hot tub at night looking at the amazing clear night sky. Lisa the host was very helpful in recommending things to do and see in the area.
My wife and I celebrated out 20th Anniversary at the River Farm and had an absolutely wonderful time. Our hosts were enjoyable - entertaining us one evening with a campfire and wine. They shared their favorite places to eat and were a source of useful information. And if you're into organic farming and sustainable living they're the people for you.
There is a hot tub available for the sole use of guests, screened from the main house. The casita was clean and comfortable.
We are already planning to make another visit next year.
