Family friendly Cotswold retreat, full of character, local attractions close by

Bedrooms 3
Space 10,763 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

3 bedroom family house in the heart of the Cotswolds, with rural views.

Waterton Stables is an old house, converted into two dwellings. The guest cottage has 1 double bedroom, 1 twin room and a single bedroom. There is a bathroom with shower and bath, and a separate wc. Guests have a hallway, sitting room with large flat screen TV, a dining area and a new kitchen overlooking the garden. There is also a utility room with washer, dryer, wc and shower.

The house is full of character, having been the old stable block/groom's cottage for the large manor house nearby. It is approached by a long drive, which is surrounded by fields grazed by sheep and occasionally horses. There are stables and a small barn and the drive ends in a large courtyard with ample space for cars. There is a table and chairs for guest's use outside their kitchen, and a tennis court and swimming pool can be used at the owner's discretion.

The local pub is a 5 minute walk away, and is perfect for an evening meal if you prefer to walk rather than drive. There are many old pubs with excellent food and warm cosy interiors for winter nights, and gardens with views for summer eating. It is a wonderful area for a break.

About Gillie

We are a family of 4, but our 2 children now live and work in London. My husband is occasionally away on business, but I spend much of my time here, but also in London, enjoying the buzz of city life which contrasts well with our lovely rural life in the Cotswolds.

Gillie purchased this house in 2007

Why Gillie chose Cirencester

The house is full of character; it was once a stable block and groom's cottage, and was made into one property at least 30 years ago. Cotswold houses were built with small windows to keep in the warmth but the windows here are large and numerous so it is a very light bright house, but perfectly warm in the winters. We love the garden too, manageable but large enough to create 'rooms' for peace and privacy.

The area holds special significance for me as it was where I was brought up; it is an area of outstanding beauty, with pretty villages, beautiful stone houses and lovely market towns.

What makes this house unique

It is a unique house, which is why we fell in love with it. We love the huge courtyard, the unusual layout, the large rooms, the beautiful stonework, the old tack room and tool room in the courtyard, and of course the surrounding countryside.

Absolutely wonderful in every way! Beautiful house in lovely location and Gillie so helpful.

  • 5 of 5

We came to Waterton Stables for the weekend of our son's wedding at the local church. Obviously we wanted to enjoy our stay but this exceeded all our expectations! As soon as we drove into the courtyard and saw the beautiful house we were thrilled. Gillie and Kevin were so welcoming and helpful and made sure we had all we could possibly need. The house is beautifully furnished with lovely, spacious rooms and the garden is so pretty. We were invited to swim in the pool and had lovely evenings sitting outside. All in all, a really wonderful stay in a beautiful place - totally peaceful and rural (down a long drive off a country lane) but only a couple of miles from Cirencester. We'd love to return - thank you!

We are close to many interesting places to visit, including numerous National Trust properties and gardens. There are beautiful Cotswold stone villages, such as Winson and Barnsley nearby, the Model Village and Birdland at Bourton on the Water, the famous Arboretum at Westonbirt, the lakes at South Cerney for sailing and waterskiing, Cotswold Wildlife Park, where many rare and endangered species can be seen in 160 acres of parkland, Slimbridge Wetland Centre, set up by Sir Peter Scott (son of the Antarctic explorer, Captain Scott), with the world's largest collection of swans, geese, ducks and flamingoes and Landrover and canoe safaris offered.. the list goes on! The city of Bristol is well worth a visit, with historical and heritage sites such as Bristol Cathedral and the Lord Mayor's Chapel, and visit the Brunel Institute to learn about the ships that set sale from here as a direct result of the Australian gold rush. Bath is popular for its fine Roman and Georgian architecture, it's World Heritage Site' designation (1987) and it's boutique shops, restaurants and wine bars. Cirencester, only 3 miles away, is an old market town, with a beautiful medieval church dated around 1115. The town of Burford is quintessential Cotswolds, a pretty town with old hotels and pubs and plenty of shops to visit, including Burford Garden Centre, selling not only plants but everything you could possibly want! Cheltenham, an old Spa town, is 20 minutes away, and is host to a jazz festival, a literary festival, science festival and music festival. It has attractive tree lined streets of Georgian houses and some very lovely shops and restaurants.
