Le Cadran Solaire
Beautiful Rural Gites
- English, French
After many holidays all over France where we rented accommodation, we decided to settle upon the Charente Maritime, with its wide blue skies and access to the beach, and buy a family holiday house. We fell in love with Les Chapelles and its peaceful rural setting as soon as we saw it and were delighted to take it over early in 2016. The two gites, Le Cadran Solaire and La Cachette, have been rented out as holiday accommodation for a number of years and we are keen to maintain the great holiday experience offered by our predecessors.
Kate purchased this Cottage in 2016
Why Kate chose Montpellier-de-Médillan
Les Chapelles has the benefits of being a truly peaceful rural location but with easy access to good-sized towns and, of course, the beautiful Atlantic beaches. The Charente-Maritime is known as being the second-sunniest region in France, which is lovely, yet is still relatively undiscovered and authentically French.
What makes this Cottage unique
Beautiful self-contained accommodation with private outside space, access to large garden, heated indoor pool with sun terrace, table tennis and well equipped shady children's playroom.

A wonderful holiday!
We had a fantastic week at Le Cadran Solaire in August. The gite was in a beautiful and quiet location and had everything we needed. Being woken by the neighbouring cockerel rather than our children was a treat! We all loved the pool and our children (aged 6 & 2) would have stayed in the playroom all day if we had let them! Saintes was a beautiful town to visit and the market was a great place to pick up fresh fruit and veg (as well as wine and cheese!) We made several trips to the beach in St Georges de Dionne about 25 minutes away and we were blown away by Bordeaux. Stunning city. Kate, Jonathan and their housekeeper, Rachel were so friendly and helpful, especially when we burst two tyres on our hire car the morning we were due to leave!! I'm not sure we would have caught our flight if it hadn't been for them! All in all, a wonderful holiday with lots to do for all our family. We hope to come again!

The perfect place for French family fun!
This is our third time in this gorgeous gite and once again it hasn't disappointed. It's very clean, comfortable and with great facilities for all ages, our chldren (aged 4, 8 and 10 had loads to occupy them. A special mention has to be the amazing pool which we all used twice a day, most days. It was cool and refreshing on the hot days and handy on the odd rainy afternoon too. No stressing about sun cream and burning either. We love this area, its beautiful and the fields of sunflowers were truly breathtaking. The gite is in a fab location and we were able to do several trips including the Aquarium at La Rochelle, La Palmyre Zoo, Saintes and the fab beach resort of St. Palais Sur Mer, which is not complete unless you have eaten at 'Chez Bob' on the seafront!
Many thanks to Kate and your lovely family for your hospitality and helping us enjoy a much needed spot of rest and relaxation at Les Chappelles!
Au revoir, The Clydesdale family
Thank you for your lovely review, Sander. I am so glad that you had a good time at Les Chapelles. I note your comment about a vacuum cleaner. With best wishes, Kate

Beautiful beaches at St Georges-de-Didonne and Royan are within 25 minutes' drive, with the Cote Sauvage about 40 minutes away by car. The Ile de Re and Ile d'Oleron are within an hour's drive.
The nearest airport is La Rochelle, about an hour's drive away. Bordeaux airport is a little further (approx. 80 mins) and Poitiers 90 minutes away by car. If flying, hiring a car is strongly recommended.
The northern ports of France (Cherbourg, Caen, St. Malo) are about a 5 hour drive, with Calais and the Eurotunnel about a 7 hour drive away.
Our nearest village is Montpellier-de-Médillan, about 1.5km away. The small town of Cozes is 9km away, with historic Roman town Saintes and seaside town Royan both about 20km away in opposite directions.
